A selective catalytic converter has been developed to quantify nitrous acid (HONO), a photochemical precursor to NO and OH radicals that drives the formation of ozone and other pollutants in the troposphere. The converter is made from a sulfonated tetrafluoroethylene-based fluoropolymer-copolymer (Nafion) that was found to convert HONO to NO with unity yield under specific conditions. When coupled to a commercially available NO (=NO + NO) chemiluminescence (CL) analyzer, the system measures HONO with a limit of detection as low as 64 parts-per-trillion (ppt) (1 min average) in addition to NO.

Unique surface properties of aluminosilicate clay minerals arise from anisotropic distribution of surface charge across their layered structures. Photocatalytic paints based on titanium dioxide (TiO) nanoparticles represent a promising treatment technology for cleaning the air at our dwellings. The aim of this double-blind, placebo-controlled and parallel- arm randomized clinical trial was to evaluate the effects of Lactobacillus rhamnosus SP1-containing probiotic sachet and azithromycin tablets as an adjunct to nonsurgical therapy in clinical parameters and in presence and levels of Tannerella forsythia, Porphyromonas gingivalis and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans. Forty-seven systemically healthy volunteers with chronic periodontitis were recruited and monitored clinically and microbiologically at baseline for 3, 6 and 9 months after therapy. Subgingival plaque samples were collected from four periodontal sites with clinical attachment level ≥1 mm, probing pocket depth ≥4 mm and bleeding on probing, one site in each quadrant.

Laser ablation aerosol particle-time of flight mass spectrometer (LAAP-ToF-MS) measures the size number of particles, and chemical composition of individual particles in real-time. LAAP-ToF-MS measurements of chemical composition are difficult to quantify, mostly because the instrument sensitivities to various chemical species in the multicomponent atmospheric aerosol particles are unknown. In this study, we investigate a field-based approach for quantitative measurements of ammonium, nitrate, sulfate, OC, and EC, in size-segregated atmospheric aerosols, by LAAP-ToF-MS using concurrent measurements from high-resolution time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometer (HR-ToF-AMS), and multi-angle absorption photometer (MAAP).

A 57-year-old asymptomatic man showed a round echo-dense mass, partially occupying the left atrium on echocardiography. Magnetic resonance localized the mass in the atrioventricular groove, inside the pericardial space, and showed a large hepatic mass too. Computed tomography revealed significant compression of the left main coronary artery and of the left pulmonary veins outlet.

Bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia (BOOP) is a clinicopathological entity with well-defined diagnostic criteria, which can be idiopathic or produced by a variety of biological processes. We describe the occurrence of BOOP in three children, one with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia and two with acute promyelocytic leukaemia. In the three patients, BOOP developed 10-20 days after a course of therapy with cytosine arabinoside and anthracyclines.

Thirty-one fiberoptic bronchoscopies and BAL performed within 4 days after the appearance of pulmonary infiltrates in 28 children who received BMT were reviewed. A causative agent was identified in 67% of patients with diffuse infiltrates (Cytomegalovirus in 8 cases, Pneumocystis carinii in 4) and in 31% of those with localized infiltrates (Aspergillus in 2, bacteria in 2). No relevant side effect was reported.
