The present work opens with an acknowledgement to the research activity performed by Luciana Naldini while affiliated at the Università degli Studi di Sassari (Italy), in particular towards gold complexes and clusters, as a tribute to her outstanding figure in a time and a society where being a woman in science was rather difficult, hoping her achievements could be of inspiration to young female chemists in pursuing their careers against the many hurdles they may encounter. Naldini's findings will be a key to introduce the most recent results in this field, showing how the chemistry of gold compounds has changed throughout the years, to reach levels of complexity and elegance that were once unimagined. The study of gold complexes and clusters with various phosphine ligands was Naldini's main field of research because of the potential application of these species in diverse research areas including electronics, catalysis, and medicine.

Background: Whether convective therapies allow better control of serum phosphate (P) is still undefined, and no data are available concerning on-line haemofiltration (HF). The objectives of the study are to evaluate the effect of convective treatments (CTs) on P levels in comparison with low-flux haemodialysis (HD) and to evaluate the correlates of serum phosphate in a post hoc analysis of a randomized clinical trial.

Methods: This analysis was performed in the database of a multicentre, open label and randomized controlled study in which 146 chronic HD patients from 27 Italian centres were randomly assigned to HD (70 patients) or CTs: on-line pre-dilution HF (36 patients) or on-line pre-dilution haemodiafiltration (40 patients).

Background: Hemofiltrate reinfusion (HFR) is a form of hemodiafiltration (HDF) in which replacement fluid is constituted by ultrafiltrate from the patient 'regenerated' through a cartridge containing hydrophobic styrene resin. Bicarbonate-based dialysis solutions (DS) used in routine hemodialysis and HDF contain small quantities of acetate (3-5 mM) as a stabilizing agent, one of the major causes of intradialytic hypotension. Acetate-free (AF) DS have recently been made available, substituting acetate with hydrochloric acid.

The necropolis of S'Illot des Porros, one of the most important prehistoric funerary sites of the Balearic Islands (Spain), was in use from the VIth and Vth century BCE until the Ist century CE. Located in a funerary area which contains two cementeries and one sanctuary, this site is constituted by three funerary chambers named A, B and C, respectively. Investigations on all the human burnt bone remains of the chambers, carried out mainly by the X-ray diffraction and supplemented in some cases by Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy pointed to the simultaneous use of inhumation and cremation funerary rites, probably due to existing social differences.

This work deals with the application of artificial neural networks to two common problems in spectroscopy: the identification of distorted UV-visible spectra of a specific class of organic compounds, and the quantitative determination of single components in binary mixtures of these compounds. The examined species were six organic indicators, whose spectra are very similar to each other; the trained networks have proven to be very powerful in both applications.

Background: The development and improvement of reliable computational methods designed to evaluate the quality of protein models is relevant in the context of protein structure refinement, which has been recently identified as one of the bottlenecks limiting the quality and usefulness of protein structure prediction.

Results: In this contribution, we present a computational method (Artificial Intelligence Decoys Evaluator: AIDE) which is able to consistently discriminate between correct and incorrect protein models. In particular, the method is based on neural networks that use as input 15 structural parameters, which include energy, solvent accessible surface, hydrophobic contacts and secondary structure content.

alphaB-crystallin is a small heat shock protein that shows chaperone-like activity, as it protects the aggregation of denatured proteins. In this work, the possible relationships between structural characteristics and the biological activity of alphaB-crystallin were investigated on the native protein and on the protein undergoing the separate effects of metal ligation and temperature. The chaperone-like activity of alphaB-crystallin increased in the presence of zinc and when temperature was increased.

Aim: The purpose of the study was to examine the effect of hemodiafiltration with endogenous reinfusion (HFR) compared to hemodialysis (HD) on 28 uremic patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism (2HPT) but positively selected for good and stable control of phosphatemia in order to evaluate the independent effects of dialysis treatments on bone turnover metabolism.

Methods: The study was divided into 3 periods of observation: a) HD for three months; b) HFR for three months; c) HFR for a further 3 months. We analysed the trend of: whole PTH, 1-84 PTH, 7-84 PTH, alkaline phosphatase and its bone isoenzyme, total and ionised calcium, phosphatemia, dose of phosphate binder agents, beta2-microglobulin, CRP.

The chaperone-like activity and the oligomeric state of alphaB-crystallin were studied at different temperatures and in the presence of urea and thiocyanate. The activity, assessed measuring the ability of alphaB-crystallin to prevent the aggregation of denatured insulin, strongly depends on temperature. While a significant activity increase was detected at 42 degrees C, the presence of urea and thiocyanate does not affect the protein activity in an irreversible way.

The interactions between four inhibitors and adenosine deaminase (ADA) were examined by calculating their binding free energies after molecular dynamics simulations. A bonded model was used to represent the electrostatic potentials of the zinc coordination site. The charge distribution of the model was derived by using a two-stage electrostatic potential fitting calculations.

Three-dimensional models for alphaB-crystallin and its complex with zinc were obtained by molecular homology modeling and quantum mechanical calculations in order to explain the effect of the metal on the chaperone-like activity of alphaB-crystallin. In fact, measurements of the chaperone-like activity of alphaB-crystallin revealed that it is significantly increased in presence of the zinc. The theoretical models allowed us to estimate the increased exposition of hydrophobic residues caused by the presence of zinc, suggesting a relationship between structural changes and the increased chaperone-like activity.

Background: The objective of the study was to compare the convective treatment modes, on-line hemofiltration (HF) and on-line hemodiafiltration (HDF), regarding cardiovascular tolerance and effects on blood pressure, when applied under similar conditions in stable dialysis patients.

Methods: 39 clinically stable dialysis patients were treated with HD for 6 months (run-in period), followed by HF and HDF in random order for 2x6 months. Similar biocompatibility (same membrane and fluid quality), similar treatment time and urea Kt/V were achieved using AK100/200 ULTRA machines, polyamide membranes in low-flux and high-flux versions and appropriate adjustment of blood flow rate (Qb) and dilution ratio (Qb/Qinf).

Catalytic amounts of glucose oxidase from Aspergillus niger (GO) are active in the reduction of O2 to H2O2 in the presence of irradiated suspensions of TiO2 and isopropyl alcohol as electron donor. An explanation of this behaviour is given on the basis of the ability of the enzyme to capture electrons from the photoexcited TiO2 instead of its natural substrate, glucose. This process has a marked positive effect on both the oxidation of isopropyl alcohol to acetone and the formation of radical intermediates, which have been detected, for the first time, by EPR-spin trapping investigation.

Different dipeptide analogues containing an oxirane ring in the place of the peptidic bond were prepared starting from naturally occurring amino acids. N-Fmoc-amino aldehydes were transformed into the corresponding methoxyvinyl derivatives through a Wittig reaction, and the addition of PhSeCl gave a series of different alpha-phenylselenyl aldehydes. Mukajiama reaction with silylketene acetals gave an intermediate product that was finally transformed into the desired oxiranyl peptidomimetics.

Conformational modifications and changes in the aggregation state of human alphaB-crystallin were investigated at different concentrations of SDS, KBr, urea, and NH4SCN and at different temperatures. Intrinsic fluorescence measurements indicated complete and reversible unfolding of the protein at 2 M NH4SCN, whereas the concentration of urea required for complete and irreversible unfolding was 6 M. Gel permeation chromatography indicated almost complete dissociation of the micelle-like aggregate of alphaB-crystallin in 2 M NH4SCN, but only partial dissociation into large-sized aggregates in 6 M urea.

In this work the results of the study on the degradation of dairy waste and lactose with use of titanium dioxide (TiO2), as photocatalyst, are presented. The ability of TiO2 to degrade dairy waste is compared either in the presence of molecular oxygen or of a bacterial hydrogenase as electron acceptor. The enzyme-mediated H2 production rates or the O2 consumption rates are used to measure electron donor degradation.

A pattern recognition method based on artificial neural networks (ANNs) to analyze and quantify the components of six alditol binary mixtures is presented. This method is suitable to classify the spectra of the 15 mixtures obtained from the six alditols and to produce quantitative estimates of the component concentrations. The system is user-friendly and is helpful in solving the problem of greatly overlapping signals, often encountered in NMR spectroscopy of carbohydrates.

The aims of the present prospective multicenter study were to assess the clinical tolerance and well being, the correlation between nPCr and Kt/V and the pretreatment beta 2-microglobulin level in patients sequentially treated with high-flux dialysis with ultrapure bicarbonate hemodialysis (HD; phase 1) and predilution hemofiltration (HF) with on-line prepared bicarbonate substitution fluid (phase II). The same monitor (Gambro AK 100 ULTRA) and membrane (polyamide) were used. Twenty-three patients, all in a stable clinical condition, entered the study.
