Background: The early detection of breast cancer (BC) is receiving global attention, creating an urgent need for more sensitive and comprehensive strategies for preventive intervention, therapy assessment, and prognosis prediction. Aberrant expression of miRNAs has been observed in various malignancies and may be potential targets for therapy. Our study aims to examine the expression profiles of miR-375, miR-574-3p, and miR-122 in the sera of Egyptian women with BC, benign breast lesions, and a control group.

Several studies have shown association of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of hepcidin regulatory pathways genes with impaired iron status. The most common is in the TMPRSS6 gene. In Africa, very few studies have been reported.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to assess the association between four vitamin D receptor (VDR) single nucleotide polymorphisms BsmI (rs1544410), ApaI (rs7975232), FokI (rs2228570) and TaqI (rs731236) and the susceptibility to chronic kidney disease (CKD) in Egyptian children and to evaluate their association with mineral status in these patients.

Material And Methods: The current study included 305 patients with CKD and 100 apparently healthy children. We measured the serum vitamin D (VD), para-thyroid hormone (PTH) level and fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF-23) levels by ELISA method.

Background: Acetaminophen (APAP) overdose is a common cause of hepatotoxicity. Antioxidants like N-acetyl cysteine are recommended as a therapeutic option; nevertheless, it has limitations. The search for efficient alternatives is ongoing.

Background: Blood transfusion (BT) is essential in treating sickle cell disease (SCD); however, it leads to iron overload (IO) and oxidative stress. We studied the relationship between oxidative stress, iron status parameters, hepcidin mRNA gene expression, and IO in SCD patients.

Methods: We classified all SCD patients (n = 90) into two groups: Group I, 45 children (s.

Article Synopsis
  • Conflicting data exist regarding the effectiveness of oral iron therapy in treating iron deficiency (ID) and iron deficiency anemia (IDA), particularly in relation to DNA damage and oxidative stress.
  • The study assessed DNA damage, oxidative stress, and antioxidant markers in children with ID and IDA before and after 8 weeks of low-dose oral iron therapy, using various biochemical assays.
  • Results showed that while DNA damage was initially higher in ID and IDA groups compared to healthy controls, low-dose iron therapy improved hematological parameters and antioxidant status, reducing DNA damage significantly in both ID and IDA children.

Indole-3-carbinol (I3C) is a naturally occurring glucosinolate found in Brassica vegetables that is usually converted in gastric acidic environment to the efficient metabolite 3,3'-diindolylmethane (DIM). Both indoles (I3C and DIM) are known chemopreventive agents for various cancers including breast cancer. This study aimed to investigate the influence of both indoles on the tumor suppressor miRNAs (let-7a-e, miR-15a, miR-16, miR-17-5p, miR-19a, and miR-20a) and oncomiRs (miR-181a, miR-181b, miR-210, miR-221, and miR-106a), which are controlling the cell cycle key regulators: cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs), CDK inhibitor p27, and cyclin D1.

Aim: Obesity and its metabolic complications are increasing in childhood and extend to adulthood. The aims of this study were to assess the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) in a sample of Egyptian adolescent girls and investigate its association with apolipoprotein E.

Methods: A cross-sectional study design was used, including 200 Egyptian adolescent girls aged between 12 and 18 years.

Background: Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) have biological properties that may contribute to the mortality of children on hemodialysis (HD). This study examines the relationship of LMW fluorescence AGEs, oxidized LDL (ox-LDL), soluble receptor AGE (sRAGE) as markers of oxidative stress in children with end stage renal disease (ESRD) undergoing HD.

Method: Thirty children with ESRD undergoing HD, and 30 healthy, age- and sex-matched children were included.

Background: The high prevalence of protein-energy malnutrition is a critical issue for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Serum albumin is the most commonly used nutritional marker. Another index is plasma amino acid (AA) profile.

Aim: To evaluate the effect of black seed oil, as add-on treatment to antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), on seizure frequency and severity as well as oxidative stress in intractable epilepsy patients.

Methods: A prospective, randomised, single-blinded, controlled, crossover pilot study. Five healthy children were included as controls.

Thalassemia is a congenital hemolytic disease caused by defective globin synthesis treated by blood transfusion. Transfusion-transmitted infections still make a great challenge in the management of patients with thalassemia major. The most important worldwide transfusion-transmitted infections are hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV) and HIV.
