Background: Despite increasing scientific interest in the effectiveness of mandibular advancement device (MAD) for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), laypeople lack knowledge about this treatment option.
Objectives: To investigate content, quality and readability of the online information regarding MAD.
Methods: Google, Yahoo and Bing were searched for 'sleep apnea', 'mandibular advancement device' and 'oral appliance'.
Unlabelled: . Radial artery occlusion after a radial access procedure: pilot study comparing eco Doppler and Inverse Barbeau Test assessments.
Introduction: Radial artery occlusion (RAO) after a radial access procedure can compromise the distal flow and hamper any possible reuse of the radial artery.
Depression and cocaine use disorder represent frequent co-current diagnoses and the GABA receptors are involved in both conditions. This research involved the application of the animal model of depression (bulbectomy, OBX) and cocaine use disorder (self-administration) to assess the efficiency of GABA receptor agonists, baclofen and SKF-97541, on cocaine rewarding property and reinforcement of seeking-behaviors in rats with depressive phenotype. Additionally, we applied immunoreactive techniques to determine changes in the expression of GABA receptor subunit 1 and 2 in rats with depression and cocaine addiction.

In the absence of consensus regarding treatment, studies evaluating the efficacy of specific therapies, such as corticosteroids and immunosuppresant agents, are needed. In this case series we evaluated the outcome in terms of survival of intravenous pulse doses of high-dose corticosteroid (methylprednisolone 1000 mg per day for 3 consecutive days) followed by montlhy cyclophosphamide administration (maximum 6 doses) in a cohort of patients with AEx-IPF referred to the Respiratory Unit, San Gerardo University Hospital, Monza, Italy, from 2009 to 2013.

Methods: In a multicenter, observational, retrospective study, consecutive DILD patients undergoing NIV because of an episode of ARF were evaluated in six Italian high dependency units. Three groups of patients were identified based on the etiology of ARF: those with pneumonia (Group A), those with acute exacerbation of fibrosis, (Group B) and those with other triggers (Group C).
Although it can be prevented, catheter-related bacteremia is common and dangerous. The antiseptics most widely used during insertion of peripheral venous catheters (PVCs) include povidone iodine, alcohol, and chlorhexidine. Another widely used antiseptic is a solution of 0.

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is more prevalent in females and it is usually related to an event triggered by physical or emotional stress. We systematically explored PubMed and Embase medical information source to identify case reports showing association between infection and TTC.

Methods: The study included all cases of patients with AMI hospitalized between 1998 and 2006. Day of admission was categorized, respectively, into four 3-month intervals, into twelve 1-month intervals, and into seven 1-day intervals for statistical analysis, performed by chi(2) test goodness of fit and partial Fourier series on total cases, males, females, and nonfatal and fatal cases.
Acute cerebrovascular events are not randomly distributed over time but show specific temporal patterns of occurrence. However, most studies focused stroke and little is known about transient ischemic attack. This study aimed to explore the existence of a temporal pattern of transient ischemic attack and the possible influence by the most common risk factors.

However, acute lower back pain not always derives from a benign cause. We report here the case of a 63-year-old diabetic man who presented to the ED complaining of acute low back pain with sciatica and fever.

These include: APE1-Asn148Gln, XRCC1-Arg399Gln and XRCC1-Arg194Trp in the BER pathway, XPD-Gln751Lys in the NER pathway and XRCC3-Thr241Met in the DSB repair pathway.
Methods: To examine the independent and interacting effects of these SNPs in a large study group, we analyzed these genotypes in 1,029 cases and 1,281 controls enrolled in two case-control studies of incident bladder cancer, one conducted in New Hampshire, USA and the other in Turin, Italy.
The objective is to investigate the relationships between fruit and vegetable intake, DNA repair gene polymorphisms and the risk of bladder cancer. We have analyzed a hospital-based case-control study of 266 individuals with incident, histologically confirmed bladder cancer diagnosed between 1994 and 2003. Controls (n = 193) were patients treated for benign diseases recruited daily in a random fashion from the same hospital as the cases.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA diet rich in fruit and vegetables can be effective in the reduction of oxidative stress, through the antioxidant effects of phytochemicals and other mechanisms. Protection against the carcinogenic effects of chemicals may also be exerted by an enhancement of detoxification and DNA damage repair mechanisms. To investigate a putative effect of flavonoids, a class of polyphenols, on the regulation of the gene expression of DNA repair and metabolic genes, a 1-month flavonoid-rich diet was administered to thirty healthy male smokers, nine of whom underwent gene expression analysis.

Consequently, the availability of means for accurate identification is crucial to assess the pathogenic characteristics and to clarify clinical relevance of the individual species. Here, 146 clinical staphylococcal isolates belonging to non Sau/ non Sep species from prosthesis-associated orthopedic infections were analyzed by conventional enzymatic galleries and by automated ribotyping.

Bladder cancer is associated with tobacco smoking and occupational exposure. The repair of DNA damage has a key role in protecting the genome from the insults of cancer-causing agents. We analyzed 13 polymorphisms in seven DNA repair genes belonging to different repair pathways [X-ray repair cross-complementing group 1 (XRCC1): 26304C>T, 26651A>G, 28152A>G; xeroderma pigmentosum-D (XPD): 23591A>G, 35931A>C; excision repair complementing defective in Chinese hamster, group 1 (ERCC1): 19007C>T; XRCC3: 4541T>C, 17893A>G, 18067C>T; proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA): 6084G>C; ERCC4: 30028C>T, 30147A>G; and XRCC2-31479A>G] in 317 incident bladder cancer patients and 317 controls.

This study compares three different techniques for the detection of biofilm-positive strains. The presence of icaA and icaD genes responsible for biofilm synthesis was investigated by a PCR method in a collection of 80 S.

A multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the detection of the five individual genes of ica locus was developed, with the aim to probe the set of genes in a large collection of Staphylococcus epidermidis clinical isolates. Single representative fragments for icaR, icaA, icaD, icaB, and icaC genes were selected.
