View Article and Find Full Text PDFIndocyanine Blue (ICB) is the deep-red pentamethine analogue of the widely used clinical near-infrared heptamethine cyanine dye Indocyanine Green (ICG). The two fluorophores have the same number of functional groups and molecular charge and vary only by a single vinylene unit in the polymethine chain, which produces a predictable difference in spectral and physicochemical properties. We find that the two dyes can be employed as a complementary pair in diverse types of fundamental and applied fluorescence imaging experiments.

A communication tool was designed using evidence-based strategies from the academic literature. A four-step framework is presented, which includes: step (1) helping patients to understand the association between e-cigarette use and pre-diabetes; step (2) the synergistic health impacts of e-cigarette use and pre-diabetes; step (3) management of diabetes-related lifestyle factors; and step (4) stages of change assessment related to e-cigarette reduction.

The rainforest consists of an inherent richness of plant secondary metabolites that are the most intense in the rainforest. The search for more potent and more bioavailable compounds from other plant sources is ongoing, and our short review will outline the pathways from the discovery of bioactive plants to the structural identification of active compounds, testing for potency, and then neuroprotection in a triculture system, and finally, the validation in an appropriate neuro-inflammatory mouse model, using some examples from our current research.

ChAT, is produced in the body of the neuron, transported to the nerve terminal (where its concentration is highest), and catalyzes the transfer of an acetyl group from the coenzyme acetyl-CoA to choline, yielding ACh. View Article and Find Full Text PDFSquaraine Figure Eight (SF8) dyes are a unique class of deep-red fluorescent dyes with self-threaded molecular architecture that provides structural rigidity while simultaneously encapsulating and protecting the emissive fluorochrome. Previous cell microscopy and bulk phase studies of SF8 dyes indicated order of magnitude enhancements in photostability over conventional pentamethine cyanine dyes such as Cy5. Studies conducted at the single molecule level now reveal that these ensemble level enhancements carry over to the single molecule level in terms of enhanced emission quantum yields, longer times to photobleaching, and enhanced total photon yields.

Over the years, many efforts to improve the photophysical and pharmacokinetic properties of ICG have investigated numerous nanoparticle formulations, especially liposomes with membrane-embedded ICG. A series of systematic absorption and fluorescence experiments, including FRET experiments using ICG as a fluorescence energy acceptor, found that ICG transfers spontaneously from liposomes to albumin protein residing in the external solution with a half-life of ∼10 min at 37 °C.

A key synthetic step is the facile substitution of a heptamethine 4'-Cl atom by a phenol bearing two triethylene glycol chains. The lead compound is a heptamethine dye with four shielding arms, and a series of comparative spectroscopy studies showed that the shielding arms (a) increased dye photostability and chemical stability and (b) inhibited dye self-aggregation and association with albumin protein.

Upon activation, glia undergoes structural and morphological changes such as the microglial cells swell in size and astrocytes become bushy, which play both beneficial and detrimental roles. Hence, they are unable to perform the normal physiological role in brain immunity.

Three cancer-targeting NIR fluorescent probes were synthesized, each with an appended cRGDfK peptide to provide selective affinity for integrin receptors that are overexpressed on the surface of many cancer cells including the A549 lung adenocarcinoma cells used in this study.

This study aims to extend these findings by investigating the effect of microglial activation and ageing on the total number of Purkinje cells and the morphology of their dendritic arborization. Through comparison of transgenic GFAP-IL6 mice and their wild-type counterparts at the ages of 12 and 24-months, we were able to investigate the effects of ageing and chronic microglial activation on Purkinje cells.

Background: Management of epilepsy during pregnancy in a resource-limited setting (RLS) is challenging. This study aimed to assess obstetric outcomes and effects on babies of women with epilepsy (WWE) exposed to Anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs) compared to non-exposed controls in a RLS.
Methods: Pregnant WWE were recruited from antenatal and neurology clinics of a tertiary care hospitals in Sri Lanka.
Introduction: The antinociceptive effect of botulinum toxin-A (BTX-A) in trigeminal neuralgia (TN) has been described. We evaluated effects of BTX-A in relieving pain in patients with refractory TN at National Hospital of Sri Lanka.
Materials And Methods: Pain in patients with TN was assessed using a visual analog from 0 to 10.
Background: Studies of groundwater sources in Sri Lanka show that in the entire Northern, North Central, Uva and Eastern Provinces, and also in a large area of the North Western Province, groundwater fluoride content is within the range 1.0 mg/l and 3.0 mg/l.
