The objective of this systematic review (SR) with meta-analysis (MA) was to identify the dietary patterns of the population, regarding ethnicity and gender, and their association with the metabolic syndrome and its risk factors (MetS-RF). The literature search was performed using Medline, Scopus, Ebsco, SciELO, and BVS databases. Studies with adult participants that identified dietary patterns associated with MetS-RF were included.

Periprosthetic joint infections are one of the most feared complications due to the high associated morbidity and mortality, with a high number of pathogens that may be associated with its etiology. The present study performed geochemical fractioning of major and minor elements in a cross-shelf gradient of the Abrolhos Bank, where the largest and most diverse coral reefs in the South Atlantic are concentrated. The fractioning was performed using sequential extractions to determine the degree of availability and toxicity of the elements. The mobility pattern of the elements investigated were in the following order: Ca > Mn > Pb > Cr > Zn > Fe > V > Cu > Ba>Al > Ni > Ti.

Association between the insertion type of the uncinate process and the development of Frontal Sinus Mucoceles - is there a relationship?

Background: The frontal sinus drainage pathway is formed by either the ethmoid infundibulum or the middle meatus, which depends on the superior insertion of the uncinate process. According to Landsberg & Friedman the are 6 types of superior uncinate process insertion. The aim of this study is to find an association between the uncinate process insertion type and the development of frontal sinus mucoceles.

Travel burden and clinical presentation of retinoblastoma: analysis of 1024 patients from 43 African countries and 518 patients from 40 European countries.

Background: The travel distance from home to a treatment centre, which may impact the stage at diagnosis, has not been investigated for retinoblastoma, the most common childhood eye cancer. We aimed to investigate the travel burden and its impact on clinical presentation in a large sample of patients with retinoblastoma from Africa and Europe.

Macular choroidal thickness after vitreoretinal surgery: Long-term effect of pars plana vitrectomy with and without encircling scleral buckling surgery.

Purpose: To evaluate the macular choroidal thickness (CT) of eyes subjected to pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) whether or not combined with encircling scleral buckling (ESB) surgery for primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment repair at 6 months or more after surgery.

Methods: This observational study included: 15 eyes (15 patients) submitted to combined ESB+PPV; 15 eyes submitted to PPV and their respective 30 normal fellow eyes (FE). Two 6mm lineal perpendicular optical coherence tomography B-scans centred on the fovea with enhanced depth imaging were performed on each eye.

Refractory aqueous misdirection syndrome: A possible complication of penetrating keratoplasty.

Clinical Case: An 85 year-old woman presented with a flat anterior chamber of the left eye, severe ocular hypertension, and a normal ultrasound examination in the day following a penetrating keratoplasty (PK). The clinical status did not respond to maximum medical therapy, laser posterior capsulotomy, anterior hyaloidotomy, and complete 23 G vitrectomy. The patient refused further intervention, and light perception was lost after 6 months of follow-up.

A 36-year-old woman, with history of cutaneous papilomatosis and thyroid carcinoma presented with headache, transitory visual blurring and nausea. Funduscopy showed papilloedema. MRI showed a tumour of the right cerebellar hemisphere with a striated, tigroid pattern, typical of Lhermitte-Duclos disease (LDD).

Summary: Iris-claw intraocular lens (ICIOL) for aphakia needs a large 5.4 mm corneal incision for its implantation. The technique needs corneal suture, associated with some postoperative astigmatism.

Chronic Ocular Graft vs Host Disease as a Serious Complication of Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation: Case Report.

Chronic graft-vs-host disease (cGVHD) is a serious systemic immunological complication of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). Ocular GVHD (O-GVHD) is frequently associated with cGVHD. Secondary corneal epithelial changes can occur in the setting of advanced chronic O-GVHD-associated keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS), which generally has a stable course with conventional medical treatment.

Social determinants and their interference in homicide rates in a city in northeastern Brazil.

Objective: This paper aims to analyze the possible relationship between social determinants and homicide mortality in Fortaleza (CE), Brazil.

Method: To investigate whether the rate of mortality by homicides is related to social determinants, an ecological study with emphasis on spatial analysis was conducted in the city of Fortaleza. Social, economic, demographic and sanitation data, as well as information regarding years of potential life lost, and Human Development Index were collected.

[Factors associated with the report and adolescent abuse in primary healthcare].

This study aimed to analyze factors associated with the reporting of child and adolescent abuse in primary healthcare. It is a cross-sectional study conducted with 381 professionals (physicians, nurses and dental surgeons) from three healthcare regions of the state of Ceara, Brazil. It used a self-administered questionnaire asking for socio-demographic data, vocational education and training, instrumentation and knowledge on the issue, identification and reporting of abuse cases.
