This work shows the synthesis of a series of Morita-Baylis-Hillman adducts from isatin derivatives via an efficient green approach involving the use of a new catalyst system, a mixture of copper-manganese iminodiacetate 1D coordination polymer (Cu/Mn-IDA) and choline chloride-urea deep eutectic solvent (ChCl/urea 1:2). The adducts were obtained in good to excellent yields (59-97%) with shorter reaction times. The results demonstrate for the first time the synergistic catalytic effect of the combination of deep eutectic solvent and coordination polymer on the Morita-Baylis-Hillman reactions.

Article Synopsis
  • - Candida albicans is the main cause of oral candidiasis, and its growing resistance to drugs has sparked the search for better antifungal treatments, leading researchers to investigate the effects of (-)-fenchone.
  • - The study found that (-)-fenchone is effective against C. albicans, including strains resistant to miconazole, demonstrating strong antifungal properties with a Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of 8 μg/mL.
  • - Negative effects on the fungus do not stem from cell wall or membrane damage, and although (-)-fenchone has some ability to prevent biofilm formation, it doesn't disrupt existing biofilms; it also showed low toxicity, suggesting it could be a viable treatment

Germ cell tumors (GCTs) constitute diverse neoplasms arising in the gonads or extragonadal locations. Testicular GCTs (TGCTs) are the predominant solid tumors in adolescents and young men. Despite cisplatin serving as the primary therapeutic intervention for TGCTs, 10‑20% of patients with advanced disease demonstrate resistance to cisplatin‑based chemotherapy, and epithelial‑mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a potential contributor to this resistance.

Brazilian artisanal cheeses have recently gained significant commercial prominence and consumer favor, primarily due to their distinctive sensory attributes and cultural and historical appeal. Many of these cheeses are made with raw milk and undergo a relatively short ripening period, sometimes ranging from 4 to 8 days, though it is usually shorter than the period stated by law. Moreover, there is insufficient evidence regarding the efficacy of a short ripening period in reducing certain zoonotic foodborne pathogens, such as spp.

This work consists of the sedimentological, mineralogical, and geochemical characterization of eight marine sediment cores collected in the Central Bransfield Basin, along a transect between the South Shetland Islands to the Antarctic Peninsula and its correlation to the sedimentary and oceanographic processes of the area. A chemical characterization based on X-ray fluorescence dispersive spectrometry was implemented to obtain geochemical data of the marine sediment while the minerals were identified by X-ray diffraction. The study allowed to classify the cores into three groups according to their sediment source and chemical and mineralogical characteristics.

The intrinsic mechanisms that regulate neurotoxic versus neuroprotective astrocyte phenotypes and their effects on central nervous system degeneration and repair remain poorly understood. Here we show that injured white matter astrocytes differentiate into two distinct C3-positive and C3-negative reactive populations, previously simplified as neurotoxic (A1) and neuroprotective (A2), which can be further subdivided into unique subpopulations defined by proliferation and differential gene expression signatures. We find the balance of neurotoxic versus neuroprotective astrocytes is regulated by discrete pools of compartmented cyclic adenosine monophosphate derived from soluble adenylyl cyclase and show that proliferating neuroprotective astrocytes inhibit microglial activation and downstream neurotoxic astrocyte differentiation to promote retinal ganglion cell survival.

In this study, a novel electrochemical assay for determining 17-β-estradiol (E2) was proposed. The approach involves modifying a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) with a nanocomposite consisting of α-FeO nanoparticles supported on carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-denoted as α-FeO-CNT/GCE. The synthesis of the α-FeO-CNT nanocomposite was achieved through a simple and cost-effective hydrothermal process.

Ovarian germ cell tumors (OGCTs) are rare in adults; indeed, they occur predominantly in children, adolescents, and young adults, and they account for approximately 11% of cancer diagnoses in these groups. Because OGCTs are rare tumors, our current understanding of them is sparse; this is because few studies have investigated the molecular basis of pediatric and adult cancers. Here, we review the etiopathogenesis of OGCTs in children and adults, and we address the molecular landscape of these tumors, including integrated genomic analysis, microRNAs, DNA methylation, the molecular implications of treatment resistance, and the development of in vitro and in vivo models.

The drugs used in the treatment of leishmaniasis show problems concerning side effects and toxicity. As a result, the search for new actives is necessary, and natural products like carvacrol - 5-isopropyl-2-methylphenol, become a relevant alternative. To enable the use of carvacrol as an antileishmanial agent, thermosensitive hydrogels were developed from poloxamer triblock copolymers 407 (P407) and 188 (P188).

The failure of adult CNS neurons to survive and regenerate their axons after injury or in neurodegenerative disease remains a major target for basic and clinical neuroscience. Recent data demonstrated in the adult mouse that exogenous expression of Sry-related high-mobility-box 11 (Sox11) promotes optic nerve regeneration after optic nerve injury but exacerbates the death of a subset of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), α-RGCs. During development, Sox11 is required for RGC differentiation from retinal progenitor cells (RPCs), and we found that mutation of a single residue to prevent SUMOylation at lysine 91 (K91) increased Sox11 nuclear localization and RGC differentiation Here, we explored whether this Sox11 manipulation similarly has stronger effects on RGC survival and optic nerve regeneration.
