Dementia is one of the most disabling health conditions in older people. Increasing attention is paid to the preclinical phase of dementia and to the prevention programs to reduce the number of patients in the future. Aims of the current study are: a) to present Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) as a heterogeneous risk factor and to expose the relationship between cognitive impairment and lifestyles such as physical activity, Mediterranean diet, reading and socialization; b) to present a model, called "Camminando e leggendo… ricordo" (CLR), as a practical experience of secondary prevention aimed at MCI older people.

Technological advances in diagnostic imaging make the diagnosis of spinal trauma more accurate both in the acute and in the chronic settings. Improvements in medical care and in diagnostic imaging lead to an increasing prevalence of patients' surviving injuries. The management of these patients depends on early and appropriate radiological evaluation in the acute phase.

In the process of implementation and innovation of paediatric dosage forms, buccal films for transmucosal administration of drug represent one of the most interesting approach. In fact, films are able to provide an extended duration of activity allowing minimal dosage and frequency and offer an exact and flexible dose, associated with ease of handling. The objective of the present study was to develop polymeric films for the sustained release of ondansetron hydrochloride, a selective inhibitor of 5-HT3 receptors indicated in paediatrics for the prevention and treatment of nausea and vomiting caused by cytotoxic chemotherapy or radiotherapy and postoperatively.

The aim of this work was to prepare polyelectrolyte complexes based on chitosan (CH) and carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) for colon delivery of vancomycin (VM). Various batches of polyelectrolyte complexes, using three different CH/CMC weight ratios (3:1, 1:1 and 1:3), were prepared and collected as microparticles by spray-drying process. Microparticles were characterized in terms of yield, encapsulation efficiency, drug loading, morphology and mucoadhesion properties.

LINE-1 (L1) retrotransposons are a source of endogenous reverse transcriptase (RT) activity, which is expressed as part of the L1-encoded ORF2 protein (L1-ORF2p). L1 elements are highly expressed in many cancer types, while being silenced in most differentiated somatic tissues. We previously found that RT inhibition reduces cell proliferation and promotes differentiation in neoplastic cells, indicating that high endogenous RT activity promotes cancer growth.

Propranolol administration through buccal route offers some distinct advantages thanks to the easy access to the oral mucosa, fast onset of action, and avoidance of hepatic and intestinal degradation mechanisms. To overcome the effective removal existing in the buccal cavity, mucoadhesive delivery systems are considered a promising approach as they facilitate a close contact with the buccal mucosa. The aim of this study was to prepare mucoadhesive tablets based on chitosan/gelatin microparticles for buccal delivery of propranolol hydrochloride.

The rapid growth in the number of older adults has many implications for public health, including the need to better understand the risks posed by environmental exposures. Aging leads to a decline and deterioration of functional properties at the cellular, tissue and organ level. This loss of functional properties yields to a loss of homeostasis and decreased adaptability to internal and external stress.

Brain focal hyperdensity areas are common findings in computed tomography examinations, often further evaluated in magnetic resonance imaging exams. These are usually haemosiderin and calcified perivascular clusters known as cerebral microbleeds and may be secondary signs of brain disorders. Cerebral microbleeds are paramagnetic and ferromagnetic substances determining magnetic field inhomogeneity.

Prostate cancer is among the most commonly diagnosed male diseases and a leading cause of cancer mortality in men. There is emerging evidence that autophagy plays an important role in malignant cell survival and offers protection from the anti-cancer drugs in prostate cancer cells. AMBRA1 and the autophagic protein sequestosome-1 (SQSTM1; p62) expression were evaluated by immunohistochemistry and western blot on tissue samples from both benign and malignant prostatic lesions.

Studies on sirtuins (SIRT), a family of proteins with deacetylase activity, have provided convergent evidence of the key role of these enzymes in aging-linked physiological functions. The link between SIRT1 and longevity has emerged in model organism but few data are available in humans, in particular relying on longitudinal studies. Here, we assessed whether a genetic variant within SIRT1 gene promoter (rs12778366) was associated to human longevity.

OBJECT Intraoperative language mapping is traditionally performed with low-frequency bipolar stimulation (LFBS). High-frequency train-of-five stimulation delivered by a monopolar probe (HFMS) is an alternative technique for motor mapping, with a lower reported seizure incidence. The application of HFMS in language mapping is still limited.

Research has indicated that beliefs about inflated responsibility, beliefs about perceived control over anxiety-related events and reactions (anxiety control) and metacognitive beliefs about the need to control thoughts are associated with obsessive compulsive symptoms. In the current study we tested a mediation model of the interactions between these variables in predicting obsessive compulsive symptoms. Thirty-seven individuals with obsessive compulsive disorder and 31 controls completed the following self-report instruments: the Responsibility Attitude Scale, the Anxiety Control Scale, the Beliefs about Need to Control Thoughts sub-scale of the Metacognitions Questionnaire 30, and the Padua Inventory.

A pre-registered experiment was conducted to examine psychophysiological responses to being lied to. Bridging research on social cognition and deception detection, we hypothesized that observing a liar compared to a truth-teller would decrease finger skin temperature of observers. Participants first watched two targets while not forewarned that they would later be asked to judge (direct and indirect) veracity, and then watched another two targets while forewarned about this.
