While most commonly used as a proxy for meat consumption, a more appropriate application may be to differentiate frugivory from folivory. A Rhizocephalan Parasite Induces Pervasive Effects on Its Shrimp Host.

AbstractRhizocephalan barnacles are parasites of crustaceans that are known for dramatic effects on hosts, including parasitic castration, feminization, molt inhibition, and the facilitation of epibiosis. Most research on rhizocephalans has focused on carcinized hosts, with relatively little research directed to shrimp hosts that may experience distinct consequences of infection. Here, we describe a high-prevalence rhizocephalan-shrimp system in which multiple host changes are associated with infection: the dock shrimp infected by the rhizocephalan .

Background: Drug overdose (DO) deaths rose to unprecedented levels during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. This study examines the impact of COVID-19 on the availability of cardiac allografts from DO donors and the implications of DO donor use on recipient survival.

Methods: Heart transplants reported to the United Network for Organ Sharing from January 2017 to November 2019 ("pre-COVID") and from March 2020 to June 2021 ("COVID pandemic") were analyzed with respect to DO donor status.

Objective: Intersection advanced driver assistance systems (I-ADAS) with the capability to detect possible collisions and perform evasive braking have the potential to reduce the number of intersection crashes. However, these systems will encounter many challenges caused by the complexity of real-world driving conditions. The purpose of this study is to use real-world naturalistic driving data to conduct an initial exploration of the potential challenges for future I-ADAS in straight crossing path (SCP), left turn across path/lateral direction (LTAP/LD), and left turn across path/opposite direction (LTAP/OD) crash configurations.

Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Impact on Host Transcriptomic Response in Severe Coronavirus.

We present avidity sequencing, a sequencing chemistry that separately optimizes the processes of stepping along a DNA template and that of identifying each nucleotide within the template. Nucleotide identification uses multivalent nucleotide ligands on dye-labeled cores to form polymerase-polymer-nucleotide complexes bound to clonal copies of DNA targets. These polymer-nucleotide substrates, termed avidites, decrease the required concentration of reporting nucleotides from micromolar to nanomolar and yield negligible dissociation rates.
