In chronic myelogenous leukemia, the constitutive activation of the BCR-ABL kinase transforms cells to an addicted state that requires glucose metabolism for survival. We investigated S6K1, a protein kinase that drives glycolysis in leukemia cells, as a target for counteracting glucose-dependent survival induced by BCR-ABL. BCR-ABL potently activated S6K1-dependent signaling and glycolysis.

Prognostic impact of education level of patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer enrolled in clinical trials.

Background: Socioeconomic status can potentially affect prognosis of cancer patients. Our aim was to describe potential differences in demographic and clinical characteristics, treatment, and survival by education level in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) enrolled in clinical trials of first-line treatment.

Methods: Individual data of Italian patients with advanced NSCLC (stage IV, or IIIB with supraclavicular nodes or malignant pleural effusion), ECOG performance status (PS) 0-2, enrolled in four phase III randomized trials conducted between 1996 and 2005 were pooled.

Intraoral carcinosarcoma on the floor of the mouth mimicking a benign lesion.

Carcinosarcoma is a rare malignant disease with aggressive behaviour rarely producing oral manifestations. This article reports a case of an intraoral carcinosarcoma affecting a 71-year-old black male; the diagnosis was made by histopathological and immunohistochemical analyses. Computed tomography scanning showed metastatic masses in the lungs.

Partnerships for the design, conduct, and analysis of effectiveness, and implementation research: experiences of the prevention science and methodology group.

What progress prevention research has made comes through strategic partnerships with communities and institutions that host this research, as well as professional and practice networks that facilitate the diffusion of knowledge about prevention. We discuss partnership issues related to the design, analysis, and implementation of prevention research and especially how rigorous designs, including random assignment, get resolved through a partnership between community stakeholders, institutions, and researchers. These partnerships shape not only study design, but they determine the data that can be collected and how results and new methods are disseminated.

High cardiovascular risk in patients with Type 2 diabetic nephropathy: the predictive role of albuminuria and glomerular filtration rate. The NID-2 Prospective Cohort Study.

Background: In Type 2 diabetic patients, clinical diagnosis of diabetic nephropathy (DN) is generally based on the concomitant presence of abnormal albuminuria and severe retinopathy. In this high-risk population, cardiovascular (CV) outcome has never been evaluated.

Methods: A cohort of 742 Type 2 diabetic patients with DN from 17 national centres was selected by the presence of persistent albuminuria ≥ 30 mg/day and severe diabetic retinopathy and was followed prospectively.

Introduction: Treatment of elderly patients with small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is based on scanty evidence.

Methods: Patients with extensive SCLC, age >70 years, and performance status 0-2 were eligible for a study looking for optimal two-drug combination of gemcitabine (Gem) with vinorelbine (Vin), etoposide (Eto), cisplatin (Cis), or carboplatin (Car). Gemcitabine dose was the same (1000 mg/m2, days 1-8) in all combinations.

Regional odontodysplasia (RO) is an uncommon, nonhereditary, odontogenic developmental disturbance characterized by hypoplasia and hypocalcification of the dental tissues that produce so-called "ghost teeth." This report describes a case of a 2.5-year-old girl who came to the clinic with RO affecting her right maxillary arch.

Visible and near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (VIS-NIRS) was used to discriminate meat and meat juices from three livestock species. In a first trial, samples of Longissimus lumborum muscle, corresponding to beef (31) llamas (21) and horses (27), were homogenised and their spectra collected in reflectance (NIRSystems 6500 scanning monochromator, in the range of 400-2500 nm). In the second trial, samples of meat juice (same muscle) from the same species (20 beef, 19 llama and 19 horse) were scanned in folded transmission (transflectance).

Cumulative incidence of ESRD or death before ESRD were estimated using the competing-risk approach.

Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) and frozen section evaluation are traditional components of the management of thyroid lesions. Their role and usefulness are dictated by some basic facts about thyroid pathology: (a) nodules are very common; (b ) they are benign in the majority of cases; and (c) the diagnosis of malignancy is primarily based on cytologic features in the case of papillary carcinoma, and on the presence of invasion of the tumor capsule or of blood vessels in the case of follicular carcinoma. The common occurrence of benign thyroid nodules mandates a cost-effective effective method for preoperative screening.
