Objectives: Both interleukin-6 (IL-6) and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) are crucially involved in fibrotic events that characterize interstitial lung diseases (ILD). Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate in primary cultures of normal and fibrotic human lung fibroblasts (HLF), exposed to either IL-6 or TGF-beta1, the effects on phosphorylation of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) and cell growth of IL-6 signalling inhibition, performed by the IL-6 receptor superantagonist Sant7.

Materials And Methods: MAPK phosphorylation was detected by Western blotting, HLF viability and proliferation were evaluated using the trypan blue staining and the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay, respectively.

Objective: To report a case of visual hallucinations and psychomotor agitation probably induced by an interaction between venlafaxine and propafenone.

Case Summary: An 85-year-old woman was admitted for evaluation of a mood disorder on March 20, 2006. Her general practitioner had prescribed sertraline for treatment, which had started about 6 months earlier.

COPD is a widespread inflammatory respiratory disorder characterized by a progressive, poorly reversible airflow limitation. Currently available therapies are mostly based on those used to treat asthma. However, such compounds are not able to effectively reduce the gradual functional deterioration, as well as the ongoing airway and lung inflammation occurring in COPD patients.

Background: Proteinase-activated receptors (PAR)-2 are members of the family of G-protein-coupled receptors activated by proteases. These receptors are widely expressed in several tissues and in virtually all cells involved in rhinitis and asthma. In particular, proteinases activating PAR-2 may affect airway functions and play a role in human diseases.

Introduction: Glossodynia is a multifunctional disorder characterized by painful sensations in the mouth and throat and especially on the tongue. It is commonly cured by long-term therapy with systemic regimens of anxiolytics, antidepressants, and anticonvulsants.

Case: We report here the case of a 65-year-old woman with a 4-month history of glossodynia.

Background And Objective: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are among the most widely prescribed drugs, and their use can be complicated by the development of adverse drug reactions (ADRs). The aim of this study was to assess the frequency of NSAID-induced ADRs in hospitalised patients in the Clinical Divisions of the Catanzaro and Cosenza hospitals.

Methods: We retrospectively analysed NSAID-induced ADRs after evaluating all ADRs recorded by the Clinical Divisions of the Catanzaro and Cosenza hospitals over a 10-year period, from January 1995 to December 2004.

Transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-beta1) is crucially involved in the fibrotic events characterizing interstitial lung diseases (ILDs), as well as in the airway remodeling process typical of asthma. Within such a context, the aim of our study was to investigate, in primary cultures of normal and fibrotic human lung fibroblasts (HLFs), the effects of TGF-beta1 on mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) phosphorylation, cell proliferation, and production of interleukins 6 (IL-6) and 11 (IL-11), in the presence or absence of a pretreatment with budesonide (BUD). MAPK phosphorylation was detected by Western blotting, cell viability and proliferation were evaluated using Trypan blue staining and [(3)H]-thymidine incorporation assay, respectively, and the release of IL-6 and IL-11 into cell culture supernatants was assessed by ELISA.

Many papers documented that Parkinson's disease (PD) patients treated with levodopa (L-dopa) shows elevated plasma homocysteine (Hcy) levels. Several lifestyle factors are able to influence plasma Hcy levels. We review the evidence that L-dopa therapy is related with an increase in plasma Hcy levels and that several behaviours could be able to cause changes in plasma Hcy concentrations.

We report a case of generalized dermatitis and itch induced by a possible drug-food interaction in a young woman who was consuming clomipramine for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). A 33-year-old woman affected by anxiety symptoms presented to our observation for a clinical evaluation. After psychiatric evaluation, the diagnosis of OCD was performed according to DSM-IV-TR and a pharmacological treatment with clomipramine (75-100 mg/day) plus alprazolam (0.

Headache occurs in a large proportion of young students. In this study we evaluated the incidence of headache in young people, examined associated factors and described the drug therapy used. A structured questionnaire was directly administered to 2700 students of secondary schools of Catanzaro.

Respiratory tract infections caused by both viruses and/or atypical bacteria are involved in the pathogenesis of asthma. In particular, several viruses such as respiratory syncytial virus, rhinovirus and influenza/parainfluenza viruses may favour the expression of the asthmatic phenotype, being also implicated in the induction of disease exacerbations. Within this pathological context, a significant role can also be played by airway bacterial colonizations and infections due to Chlamydiae and Mycoplasms.

Endothelin-1 (ET-1) is implicated in the fibrotic responses characterizing interstitial lung diseases, as well as in the airway remodeling process occurring in asthma. Within such a context, the aim of our study was to investigate, in primary cultures of normal human lung fibroblasts (NHLFs), the ET-1 receptor subtypes, and the intracellular signal transduction pathways involved in the proliferative effects of this peptide. Therefore, cells were exposed to ET-1 in the presence or absence of an overnight pre-treatment with either ET(A) or ET(B) selective receptor antagonists.

Homocysteine (Hcy) is a thyol amino acid resulting from de-methylation of methionine, an essential amino acid derived from dietary proteins. It is metabolized through two pathways: re-methylation and transsulfuration, which use as cofactors folate, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12. Hyperhomocysteinemia has been identified as a risk factor for cerebrovascular disease, dementia, impaired cognitive function and depression.
