Optical spin orientation of a single manganese atom in a semiconductor quantum dot using quasiresonant photoexcitation.

An optical spin orientation is achieved for a Mn atom localized in a semiconductor quantum dot using quasiresonant excitation at zero magnetic field. Optically created spin-polarized carriers generate an energy splitting of the Mn spin and enable magnetic moment orientation controlled by the photon helicity and energy. The dynamics and the magnetic field dependence of the optical pumping mechanism show that the spin lifetime of an isolated Mn atom at zero magnetic field is controlled by a magnetic anisotropy induced by the built-in strain in the quantum dots.

Up-regulating BDNF with an ampakine rescues synaptic plasticity and memory in Huntington's disease knockin mice.

Cognitive problems occur in asymptomatic gene carriers of Huntington's disease (HD), and mouse models of the disease exhibit impaired learning and substantial deficits in the cytoskeletal changes that stabilize long-term potentiation (LTP). The latter effects may be related to the decreased production of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) associated with the HD mutation. This study asked whether up-regulating endogenous BDNF levels with an ampakine, a positive modulator of AMPA-type glutamate receptors, rescues plasticity and reduces learning problems in HD (CAG140) mice.

Headache syndromes after acoustic neuroma surgery and their implications for quality of life.

The patients of this prospective study were analysed for headache as a sequela of surgery for acoustic neuroma (AN). Thirty-two per cent (30/95) of patients complained about a persisting headache syndrome with a severity of at least 6/10 on the nominal analogue scale 6 months after surgery. The occurrence of headache was significantly correlated with the prospectively evaluated parameters preoperative headache and the number of perioperative complications.

Endoscopic treatment of gastroesophageal varices in young infants with cyanoacrylate glue: a pilot study.

Background: In children, endoscopic sclerotherapy and variceal ligation (EVL) are the most used techniques for the treatment of gastroesophageal variceal bleeding (VB). However, these techniques achieve poor results in cases of gastric variceal bleeding, and EVL is not applicable in young infants.

Objective: Our purpose was to evaluate the feasibility, efficacy, and safety of cyanoacrylate glue injection for the treatment of gastroesophageal varices in young infants.

Ampakines cause sustained increases in brain-derived neurotrophic factor signaling at excitatory synapses without changes in AMPA receptor subunit expression.

Recent demonstrations that positive modulators of AMPA-type glutamate receptors (ampakines) increase neuronal brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression have suggested a novel strategy for treating neurodegenerative diseases. However, reports that AMPA and BDNF receptors are down-regulated by prolonged activation raise concerns about the extent to which activity-induced increases in BDNF levels can be sustained without compromising glutamate receptor function. The present study constitutes an initial test of whether ampakines can cause enduring increases in BDNF content and signaling without affecting AMPA receptor (AMPAR) expression.

Vision- and health-related quality of life in patients with visual field loss after postchiasmatic lesions.

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to assess vision-related quality of life (QoL) in patients with visual field loss (VFL) after lesions of the postchiasmatic visual pathway and to investigate the influence of VFL and reduced visual acuity (VA) on vision-related QoL.

Methods: In 312 patients with postchiasmatic damage, VFL was measured by automated computer campimetry, and vision-related QoL was assessed by the National Eye Institute Visual Functioning Questionnaire (NEI-VFQ). Health-related QoL was obtained by the SF-36 Health Survey in 272 patients.

Web-based citation management compared to EndNote: options for medical sciences.

The authors of this article analyzed the differences in output when searching MEDLINE direct and MEDLINE via citation management software, EndNote X1, EndNote Web, and RefWorks. Several searches were performed on Ovid MEDLINE and PubMed directly. These searches were compared against the same searches conducted in Ovid MEDLINE and PubMed using the search features in EndNote X1, EndNote Web, and RefWorks.

The objective of this study was to determine the concentrations of different fractions of dissolved copper (after filtration at 0.45 microm) along the cold part of the hydrothermal fluid-seawater mixing zone on the Tour Eiffel edifice (MAR). Dissolved copper was analyzed by stripping chronopotentiometry (SCP) after chromatographic C(18) extraction.

Vision- and health-related quality of life before and after vision restoration training in cerebrally damaged patients.

Purpose: The aim of the study was to examine if improvements of stimulus detection performance in visual field tests after intensive visual training of the visual field border zone in patients with visual field defects are associated with changes in self-reported vision- and health-related quality of life (QoL).

Methods: We studied a clinical sample of 85 patients suffering from visual field loss after brain damage that underwent repetitive, daily light stimulation (vision restoration training, VRT) of the visual field border and the blind visual field for up to 75 hrs (N=16) or 150 hrs (N=69). Stimulus detection was quantified in the central visual field with a campimetric method before and after intervention.

Fe analysis by the ferrozine method: Adaptation to FIA towards in situ analysis in hydrothermal environment.

The target of this study is the adaptation of the ferrozine method to flow injection analysis (FIA) to perform iron analysis in situ using an in situ chemical analyser in hydrothermal environments. The adaptation of the method to FIA was followed by its optimisation using an experimental design screening method. The goals of the optimisation steps were to decrease the detection limit and to increase the measuring range to cope with the constraints of in situ analysis.

Purpose Of Review: Cancer cells that metastasize to the skeleton are, on their own, rarely able to destroy bone. Instead, they stimulate the function of bone-degrading cells, the osteoclasts, leading to the formation of osteolytic lesions. The purpose of this review is to consider cathepsin K, a cysteine protease produced by osteoclasts, as a therapeutic target for the treatment of patients with osteolytic bone metastases.

Background: The influence of primary systemic therapy (PST) on the expression of relevant therapeutic markers is still under investigation.

Patients And Methods: Corresponding "baseline" biopsies and post-chemotherapy surgical specimens from 87 patients treated with neoadjuvant anthracycline- or taxane-based chemotherapy were analysed for the expression of the oestrogen receptor (ER), the progesterone receptor (PR), the B-cell lymphoma protein 2 (Bcl-2), the v-erb-b2 erythroblastic leukemia viral oncogene homolog 2 (Her2/neu), the tumour protein p53 and the proliferation-related Ki-67 antigen.

Results: The pathological response rate was 70%.

Due to the demographic development in western industrialised countries, the proportion of visually impaired persons is likely to increase in the future. Currently there is a shift in scientific recognition from relative neglect of psychopathological distress in the visually impaired to better notice of disease-related subjective impairments that are detectable with specific questionnaire measures. Visual acuity primarily determines the subjective rating of visual functioning independent from the eye disease.

Detection of pulmonary nodules with move-during-scan magnetic resonance imaging using a free-breathing turbo inversion recovery magnitude sequence.

Purpose: Detection of pulmonary metastases is still a challenging task for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). It was the aim of this study to evaluate the potential of a free-breathing move-during-scan turbo inversion recovery magnitude sequence for the detection of pulmonary nodules.

Materials And Methods: The sensitivities and positive-predictive values of 2 radiologists to detect pulmonary nodules in 41 move-during-scan MRI examinations of 38 patients with different malignancies were calculated and subgroup analyses according to lesion size and localization were performed.

[The organisation of intensive care in a situation of pandemic avian influenza].

The development of an epidemic of avian influenza will have a major impact on the organisation and structure of the facilities for treatment. This paper, the product of collaboration between the six learned societies concerned, analyses the impact of a possible pandemic on the various aspects of management of patients requiring intensive care. It describes the organisation of hospital pathways for flu and non-flu patients with, in particular, the necessary actions in terms of separation of care facilities, the triage of patients and the cancellation of non-urgent activities.

Long-term learning of visual functions in patients after brain damage.

Purpose: Systematic vision restoration training has been shown to improve the detection performance of brain-damaged patients with visual-field defects. So far, patients have been trained daily up to 6 months. We wished to determine whether intensive long-term training of 12 months further increases visual detection abilities.

Recent work has added strong support to the long-standing hypothesis that the stabilization of both long-term potentiation and memory requires rapid reorganization of the spine actin cytoskeleton. This development has led to new insights into the origins of cognitive disorders, and raised the possibility that a diverse array of memory problems, including those associated with diabetes, reflect disturbances to various components of the same mechanism.
