Evaluation of the SPf66 vaccine for malaria control when delivered through the EPI scheme in Tanzania.

Background: Malaria control programmes need to protect young children, who bear the brunt of malaria disease and death in Africa. The development of a vaccine is a priority if improved and sustained malaria control is to be achieved. The best use of a vaccine in Africa will be achieved if it can be delivered through the expanded programme of immunization (EPI).

Measurement error, biases, and the validation of complex models for blood lead levels in children.

Measurement error causes biases in regression fits. If one could accurately measure exposure to environmental lead media, the line obtained would differ in important ways from the line obtained when one measures exposure with error. The effects of measurement error vary from study to study.

Randomised placebo-controlled trial of iron supplementation and malaria chemoprophylaxis for prevention of severe anaemia and malaria in Tanzanian infants.

Background: Malaria and anaemia, especially that due to iron deficiency, are two leading causes of morbidity worldwide. Little is known about the relative contribution of Plasmodium falciparum infection and iron deficiency to the aetiology of anaemia in malaria-endemic areas. We undertook a randomised comparison of different strategies for control of anaemia and malaria in infants, including an assessment of the effect of iron supplementation on malaria susceptibility.

Evaluation of SPf66 malaria vaccine during a 22-month follow-up field trial in the Pacific coast of Colombia.

A double-blind randomized placebo-controlled field trial with the SPf66 malaria vaccine was carried out in an endemic area consisting of 14 small villages with exclusive fluvial access, in a rain forest area along the Rosario River, Colombia. A total of 1257 subjects completed the full three dose vaccination schedule on days 0, 30 and 180 (643 vaccinated group/623 placebo group) and were followed-up by passive and active surveillance over a period of 22 months. One hundred and thirty-four Plasmodium falciparum malaria episodes were detected (53 in vaccinated group/81 in placebo group), yielding an attack rate of 5.

Dexamethasone in the treatment of meningeal leukemia.

To determine if dexamethasone has a role in the treatment of meningeal leukemia, 8 consecutive patients with acute lymphoblastic and signs or symptoms of CNS were included in the study. After the confirmation of leukemic blast cells on cerebrospinal fluid, they received intrathecal and IV dexamethasone; 3 days later the patients received "triple" intrathecal chemotherapy with dexamethasone, methotrexate and cytarabine, and the spinal fluid was studied again. All patients had good clinical response and 7 out of the 8 patients showed reduction on the CSF cell count after the use of dexamethasone alone.

[Acute pancreatitis associated with hepatotoxicity induced by amoxicillin-clavulanic acid].

A 25-year old man suffered from acute pancreatitis and cholestatic acute hepatitis simultaneously after 4 weeks of an antibiotic treatment withdrawal (amoxicillin plus clavulanic acid) which was given for pharyngitis. Other potential etiological causes of both acute pancreatitis and liver disease, were excluded. The causal relationship between amoxicillin plus clavulanic acid and cholestatic hepatitis is well know, but no data has been reported regarding acute pancreatitis.

Vaccination with SPf66, a chemically synthesised vaccine, against Plasmodium falciparum malaria in Colombia.

Preclinical and clinical studies have established the safety and immunogenicity of the chemically synthesised SPf66 malaria vaccine. The present study is a phase III randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, efficacy trial completed in La Tola, Colombia. 1548 volunteers over one year of age received three doses of either the vaccine (n = 738) or placebo (n = 810).

Measurement of 'in situ' mitochondrial membrane potential in Ehrlich ascites tumor cells during aerobic glycolysis.

(1) A method is presented for continuous and simultaneous monitoring of the 'in situ' mitochondrial membrane potential (delta psi m) and respiration rate of Ehrlich ascites tumor cells. The method involves permeabilization of the plasma membrane, achieved by treatment with low digitonin concentration, and the use of a TPP+ selective electrode attached to an oxygraph vessel. Binding of the probe inside the cells was analyzed assuming a proportional relationship between the amount of bound TPP+ and the free concentration of the lipophilic cation.

Habitat use by singing voles and tundra voles in the southern Yukon.

We investigated how far competitive interactions influence the use of habitats and relative abundance of two species of Microtus in the southwestern Yukon. We worked in the ecotone between alpine tundra and subalpine shrub tundra where populations of singing voles (Microtus miurus) and tundra voles (M. oeconomus) overlap little.
