The recovery of European freshwater biodiversity has come to a halt.

Owing to a long history of anthropogenic pressures, freshwater ecosystems are among the most vulnerable to biodiversity loss. Mitigation measures, including wastewater treatment and hydromorphological restoration, have aimed to improve environmental quality and foster the recovery of freshwater biodiversity. Here, using 1,816 time series of freshwater invertebrate communities collected across 22 European countries between 1968 and 2020, we quantified temporal trends in taxonomic and functional diversity and their responses to environmental pressures and gradients.

Uneventful Follow-Up 2 Years after Endovascular Treatment of a High-Flow Iatrogenic Aortocaval Fistula Causing Pulmonary Hypertension and Right Heart Failure.

Iatrogenic aortocaval fistula is an extremely rare pathologic condition that often results in clinically significant left-to-right extracardiac shunt. In slow-progressing cases, chronic right-sided heart failure can occur and, in some patients, may persist for years. We present a patient with a long-standing aortocaval fistula that was causing high-flow left-to-right shunting, tricuspid regurgitation, severe pulmonary hypertension, and right-side heart failure.

PlA2 Polymorphism in Glycoprotein IIb/IIIa Modulates the Morphology and Nanomechanics of Platelets.

Glycoprotein IIb/IIIa (GPIIb/IIIa) is the most abundant platelet surface receptor for fibrinogen and von Willebrand factor. Polymorphism PlA1/A2 in the gene of GPIIb/IIIa is among the risk factors for the development of arterial and venous thrombosis. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of the carriage of PlA1/A2 on the size, topographic features, and membrane stiffness of platelets from healthy controls and patients with deep venous thrombosis (DVT).
