The hair collar sign.

We report on two children with congenital scalp lesions which were surrounded by a ring of dark hair known as a hair collar. A review of previously reported patients with hair collars revealed that most of the scalp lesions were single and located at the vertex or parietal areas. They were most commonly composed of heterotopic neural tissue.

Fibroblasts derived from chronic diabetic ulcers differ in their response to stimulation with EGF, IGF-I, bFGF and PDGF-AB compared to controls.

Patients with diabetes mellitus experience impaired wound healing, often resulting in chronic foot ulcers. Healing can be accelerated by application of growth factors like platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF). We investigated the mitogenic responses, measured by 3[H]thymidine incorporation, of fibroblasts cultured from diabetic ulcers, non-diabetic ulcers, and non-lesional diabetic and age-matched controls, to recombinant human PDGF-AB, epidermal growth factor (EGF), basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) and insulin-like growth factor (IGF-I).

Intravenous immunoglobulin therapy for children with Stevens-Johnson syndrome.

Objective: To review the experience with intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) therapy in patients with Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) in our institution.

Methods: All charts of patients with SJS admitted to Children's Hospital between November 1988 and June 1998 were reviewed.

Results: Twelve patients with SJS were detected.

Infantile Henoch-Schönlein purpura.

Henoch-Schönlein purpura is a common cause of vasculitis in children. This condition is unusual in infants and children younger than 2 years. We describe a 4-month-old infant with infantile Henoch-Schönlein purpura and review the clinical spectrum, differential diagnoses, and the histopathologic features of the disease.

Low-dose methotrexate therapy for childhood sarcoidosis.

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of low oral doses of methotrexate as a steroid-sparing agent in children with sarcoidosis.

Study Design: An open-label, noncontrolled trial. Methotrexate was administered orally at a single weekly dose of 10 to 15 mg/m2.

Linear scleroderma in children.

Background: Linear scleroderma is a cutaneous disease of unknown etiology. It most often affects children, who develop band-like lesions in an asymmetric distribution. The literature is reviewed as to the diagnosis, pathogenesis, and treatment of linear scleroderma.

Congenital cutis laxa: a case report and review of loose skin syndromes.

Congenital cutis laxa is a deforming disease that may present for plastic surgical consultation during childhood. Failure to differentiate cutis laxa, with near normal wound healing, from the other forms of hyperelasticity syndromes with poor wound healing, has historically led to conflicting recommendations regarding the surgical management of patients presenting with loose skin. A face-lift and direct nasolabial fold excision was performed in a 10-year old patient with congenital cutis laxa with a good result.

Data from 104 subjects with tinea cruris or tinea corporis were evaluated in this double-blind, randomized study. The subjects applied naftifine cream 1% or econazole nitrate cream 1% to affected areas twice daily for 4 weeks. Pattern of injury in handball and comparison of injured versus noninjured handball players.

A questionnaire was sent to 300 members (at random) of the Dutch Handball Association (response: 76%) (1) to study the injuries involved in handball and the resulting medical attention and (2) to compare injured versus non-injured players with respect to sex, age, somatotype, and sports participation. Group A was defined as players taking part in handball only (62%); 38% also regularly took part in other sports (group B). The male/female ratio in group B was approximately 4 times larger than in group A.

Thermoradiotherapy for persistent cancer in previously irradiated fields.

Among some 300 patients undergoing clinical trails with localized radiofrequency hyperthermia, 42 whose cancers had persisted or recurred after conventional radiotherapy were selected for additional limited radiation plus hyperthermia. There were 10 complete responses to therapy, 13 partial responses and one patient was considered nonevaluable. In the remaining 18 patients there was minor regression, stabilization or progression of the tumor.

Interaction of liposomes with Kupffer cells in vitro.

We investigated the interaction of liposomes with rat Kupffer cells in monolayer maintenance culture. The liposomes (large unilamellar vesicles, LUV) were composed of 14C-labelled phosphatidylcholine, cholesterol and phosphatidylserine (molar ratio 4:5:1) and contained either 3H-labelled inulin or 125I-labelled bovine serum albumin as a non-degradable or a degradable aqueous space marker, respectively. After 2-3 days in culture the cells exhibited optimal uptake capacity.

Regional hyperthermia for cancer.

The clinical use of regional hyperthermia combined with radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or both in 107 patients with advanced cancer is reported. Surgery was subsequently carried out in eight patients. The radiofrequency equipment used is capable of heating tumors at any depth with few adverse side effects.
