Orthopaedic publications from Egypt in the last five years: a bibliometric report.

Introduction: This review was done to find the trend for orthopaedic publications from Egypt in the last 5 years, detailing the specialties that are most published and comparing this with the surrounding Middle East region.

Methods: The search included orthopaedic-related articles published in journals that are listed in PubMed, including author affiliation from Egypt between 2013 and 2017.

Results: Four hundred eighty-one publications were found.

Femoral malalignment after gamma nail insertion in the lateral decubitus position.

Introduction: Insertion of gamma nail with the patient in lateral decubitus position have the advantages of easier access to the entry point, easier fracture reduction and easier implant positioning. Our study described the incidence of femoral angular and rotational deformity following gamma nail insertion in lateral decubitus position.

Methods: In a prospective clinical case series, 31 patients (26 males and 5 females; the average age of 42.

Accuracy of plain antero-posterior radiographic-based methods for measurement of acetabular cup version.

Introduction: Acetabular cup version is crucial for successful total hip arthroplasty (THA). Many methods have been described for measurement of cup version angle. The aim of this study is to assess the accuracy of five commonly used methods for measurement of acetabular cup version in plain antero-posterior views of the pelvis and hip.

Flexor hallucis longus transfer clinical outcome through a single incision for chronic Achilles tendon rupture.

Purpose: The aim of this study is to evaluate the clinical outcome of single-incision flexor hallucis longus tendon transfer in chronic Achilles tendon rupture.

Methods: A prospective study of a series of cases of chronic Achilles tendon rupture that were treated with single-incision flexor hallucis longus tendon transfer, from April 2015 to December 2016. The study included 21 patients (15 men and 6 women), with mean age 40.

Posterior-only surgical correction of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: an Egyptian experience.

Introduction: The aim of this prospective case series study is to document safety and effectiveness of high density pedicle screws through posterior only approach with intraoperative wake-up test in correction of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS).

Methods: Between 2011 and 2015, all surgically treated patients for AIS were followed up for a minimum of 2 years. Clinical outcomes were evaluated using scoliosis research society-22 (SRS) questionnaire.

Kyphoplasty for osteoporotic vertebral fractures with posterior wall injury.

Background Context: Cement augmentation techniques are standard treatments for osteoporotic vertebral fractures. Compared with vertebroplasty, kyphoplasty is associated with lower rates of cement leak and better deformity correction; however, posterior wall fractures are relative, but not absolute; contraindications for both techniques and hence treatment practices vary among spine centers.

Purpose: The primary aim of this study was to assess our center's incidence of posterior cement leakage in osteoporotic vertebral fractures with posterior wall injury treated by balloon kyphoplasty (BKP).

Posterior only approach for fifth lumbar corpectomy: indications and technical notes.

Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of a posterior-only approach for L5 corpectomy, with lumbopelvic fixation for treatment of secondaries, infections, or burst fractures.

Methods: Between 2010 and 2013, 17 patients with L5 pathology had corpectomy through a posterior-only approach, with reconstruction of the anterior column using titanium cages filled with bone graft. The indication for surgery was presence of secondaries in nine patients, spondylitis and spondylodiscitis in five patients and burst fractures due to high energy trauma in three patients.

Hypovitaminosis D Among Patients Admitted With Hip Fracture to a Level-1 Trauma Center in the Sunny Upper Egypt: Prevalence and Associated Correlates.

Introduction: Despite abundant sunshine, hypovitaminosis D is common in the Middle East. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of hypovitaminosis D and related correlates among patients with hip fracture in Assiut University Hospitals in Upper Egypt.

Materials And Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out in 133 patients with hip fracture, aged 50 years and older, admitted to Trauma Unit of Assiut University Hospitals, from January through December 2014.

Two-stage surgical treatment for non-union of a shortened osteoporotic femur.

Introduction: We report a case of non-union with severe shortening of the femur following diaphysectomy for chronic osteomyelitis.

Case Presentation: A boy, aged 16 years presented with a dangling and excessively short left lower limb. He was using an elbow crutch in his right hand to help him walk.

Instrumented circumferential fusion for tuberculosis of the dorso-lumbar spine. A single or double stage procedure?

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to present our experience in treating dorso-lumbar tuberculosis by one-stage posterior circumferential fusion and to compare this group with a historical group treated by anterior debridement followed by postero-lateral fusion and stabilization.

Methods: Between 2003 and 2008, 32 patients with active spinal tuberculosis were treated by one-stage posterior circumferential fusion and prospectively followed for a minimum of two years. Pain severity was measured using Visual Analogue Scale (VAS).

Fibula-pro-tibia in plating tibial non-unions.

Purpose: Plating non-unions of the tibial diaphysis often presents the technical problem of poor purchase of screws due to osteoporosis. To improve the stabilization, insertion of one or more screws through the plate across the tibio-fibular space to the fibula (fibula-pro-tibia plating) has been practiced. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the fibula-pro-tibia plating technique in managing difficult diaphyseal tibial non-unions.

Failed intramedullary nailing of femur: open reduction and plate augmentation with the nail in situ.

Methods: Fourteen patients with aseptic fractures that failed to unite after intramedullary nailing (IMN) of the femur were treated by augmentation of fixation by dynamic compression plate (DCP) with the nail in situ. In six of them that had axial or rotational malalignment, direct reduction of the bone fragments and plating were done. Iliac bone grafting was performed in nine cases, when there were gaps between the fragments and in atrophic non-unions.

Valgus intertrochanteric osteotomy with single-angled 130° plate fixation for fractures and non-unions of the femoral neck.

Non-union of femoral neck fractures may occur due to mechanical and biological factors. Valgus intertrochanteric osteotomy (VITO) alters hip biomechanics and enhances fracture union. The double-angled 120° plate is usually used for internal fixation of the osteotomy.

Technique and short-term results of ankle arthrodesis using anterior plating.

Clinical and biomechanical trials have shown that rigid internal fixation during ankle arthrodesis leads to increased rates of union and is associated with a reduced infection rate, union time, discomfort and earlier mobilisation compared with other methods. We describe our technique of ankle arthrodesis using anterior plating with a narrow dynamic compression plate (DCP). Between 2004 and 2007, 29 patients with a mean age of 24.

Delayed union of multifragmentary diaphyseal fractures after bridge-plate fixation.

Despite recent developments in fracture treatment, cases of non-union after long bone fractures are still encountered. This work aims at evaluating the active management of delayed union after the bridge-plate fixation of multifragmentary diaphyseal fractures by a limited surgical interference. Nineteen patients were included.
