The Aim Of The Study: The aim of our study was to assess treatment results of angular deformities in distal radius by a system of the locking compression plates (LCP) at our clinic.

Methods: Our source data was collected prospectively from the records of patients where the locking compression plate was used for angulation correction of distal forearm between 2006 and 2007. The patients were divided by sex, the age range was defined and two groups were formed based on the initial diagnosis: the group of posttraumatic deformities (2 patients; 29 %) and the group of no traumatic deformities (3 patients with congenital shortening of ulna, valgus deformity and overgrowth of radius and 2 patients with exostoses multiplices with shortening of ulna and overgrowth of radius with ulnar angulation).

In spite of many promising experimental studies, an effective treatment dramatically eliminating the secondary damage after spinal cord injury (SCI) is still missing. Since clinical data on the therapeutical effect after methylprednisolone treatment are not conclusive, new therapeutical modalities targeting specific components of secondary spinal cord damage needs to be developed. Therapeutic drug monitoring is increasingly giving way to dosing drugs based on population-based pharmacokinetic parameters, even when pharmacokinetic values vary quite a bit in individual patients. Further, drug concentrations are often considered appropriate if they are within a defined therapeutic range, even if the patient response is suboptimal. This lecture discusses the limitations of therapeutic ranges in neonates, and proposes greater emphasis on pharmacodynamic curves to individualize drug therapy.

Aim: Traumas to the proximal tibial epiphyseal growth plate account for less than 2% of all physeal injuries, therefore, it may cause diagnostic or therapeutic difficulties. The authors studied a group of patients treated in the Clinic of pediatric surgery, orthopedics and traumatology of the Brno Faculty Hospital (FN Brno) during past 11 years, in order to assess its treatment outcomes and complication rates.

Methodology: Based on the Salter-Harris (SH) classification, the studied patients with proximal tibia epiphyseolyses were assigned to groups using the following criteria: type of epiphyseolysis and treatment approach, and the authors identified associated complications in individual patients.

Aim: The commonest benign lytic bone disorders, which compromise the bone robustness include juvenile bone cysts. Provided the cysts do not undergo spontaneous healing, which is commonly facilitated by pathological fracturing or introduction of osteosynthetic material into the cyst, the cystic cavity must be filled in. Complement activation is initiated by the pattern-recognition molecules complement component C1q, mannose-binding lectin (MBL) and ficolins (H-, L-, M-ficolin), which typically recognize antibody-antigen complexes or foreign polysaccharides. The possibility of simultaneous measurement of the classical pathway (CP), mannan-binding lectin (MBL)--lectin pathway (LP) and alternative pathway (AP) of complement activation by the recently developed Wielisa method allowed us to investigate the in vivo significance of the C1-inhibitor (C1INH) in three complement activation pathways. Functional activity of the CP, LP and AP were measured in the sera of 68 adult patients with hereditary angioedema (HAE) and 64 healthy controls. In addition, the level of C1q, MBL, MBL-associated serine protease-2 (MASP-2), C4-, C3- and C1INH was measured by standard laboratory methods.

Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) from Thermotoga maritima (TmGAPDH) is a thermostable enzyme (Tm = 102 degrees C), which is fully active at temperatures near 80 degrees C but has very low activity at room temperature. In search for an explanation of this behavior, we measured the conformational flexibility of the protein by hydrogen-deuterium exchange and compared the results with those obtained with GAPDH from rabbit muscle (RmGAPDH). At room temperature, the conformational flexibility of TmGAPDH is much less than that of RmGAPDH, but increases with increasing temperature and becomes comparable to that of RmGAPDH near the physiological temperature of Thermotoga maritima.
