Introduction: Ultra-processed food products (UPF) have been related to chronic diseases (CD). Public health politics has been establishing strategies to decrease the consumption of these products in the country.

Background: Patients with immunodeficiencies commonly experience diagnostic delays resulting in morbidity. There is an unmet need to identify patients earlier, especially those with high risk for complications. Objective: To examine the association of all forms of malnutrition and socioeconomic status (SES), educational level and ethnicity in children <5 years, non-pregnant adolescent women (11-19 years) and non-pregnant adult women (20-49 years) in Colombia.

Design: Cross-sectional analysis of data from the 2010 Colombian National Nutrition Survey. The prevalence of malnutrition was compared across categories of SES, educational level and ethnicity.

Increased plasma free fatty acids (FFAs) are associated with cardiometabolic risk factors in adults with abdominal obesity (AO). However, this association remains controversial in children. This study analyzed plasma FFA concentration in children with and without AO.

Outcomes of the collapse of a large bubble in water at high ambient pressures.

Presented here are observations of the outcomes of the collapses of large single bubbles in H_{2}O and D_{2}O at high ambient pressures. Experiments were carried out in a high-pressure spherical resonator at ambient pressures of up to 30 MPa and acoustic pressures up to 35 MPa. Monitoring of the collapse events and their outcomes was accomplished using multiframe high-speed photography.

Iron Absorption from Two Milk Formulas Fortified with Iron Sulfate Stabilized with Maltodextrin and Citric Acid.

Background: Fortification of milk formulas with iron is a strategy widely used, but the absorption of non-heme iron is low. The purpose of this study was to measure the bioavailability of two iron fortified milk formulas designed to cover toddlers´ nutritional needs. These milks were fortified with iron sulfate stabilized with maltodextrin and citric acid.

Regression of cardiac growth in kidney transplant recipients using anti-m-TOR drugs plus RAS blockers: a controlled longitudinal study.

Background: Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is common in kidney transplant (KT) recipients. LVH is associated with a worse outcome, though m-TOR therapy may help to revert this complication. We therefore conducted a longitudinal study to assess morphological and functional echocardiographic changes after conversion from CNI to m-TOR inhibitor drugs in nondiabetic KT patients who had previously received RAS blockers during the follow-up.

During the past decade the role of folate and vitamin B12 in human nutrition have been under constant re-examination. Basic knowledge on the metabolism and interactions between these essential nutrients has expanded and multiple complexities have been unraveled. These micronutrients have shared functions and intertwined metabolic pathways that define the size of the "methyl donor" pool utilized in multiple metabolic pathways; these include DNA methylation and synthesis of nucleic acids.

The effect of static pressure on the strength of inertial cavitation events.

Recent investigations of cavitation in fluids pressurized up to 30 MPa found that the intensity of light emissions increased by 1000-fold over that measured for single bubble sonoluminescence. A series of measurements is reported here to extend this original work by resolving the static pressure dependence of the shock wave and light emissions from the first and the most energetic collapses, along with the total shock wave energy and light emissions for the event. Each of these parameters was found to increase with the static pressure of the fluid.

Effect of trypsin and mucin on heme iron bioavailability in humans.

Unlabelled: In the human gastrointestinal tract, trypsin and mucin may affect the absorption of heme iron. However, these interactions have not been well-established. We determined the effect of trypsin and mucin on heme iron absorption in humans.

Temporally and spatially resolved imaging of laser-nucleated bubble cloud sonoluminescence.

Imaging techniques have been used to capture the temporal and spatial evolution of light emissions from collapsing bubble clouds at high static pressures. Emission events lasting up to 70 ns with peak diameters nearing 1 mm have been observed. Observations of the cloud evolution before and after emission events have been made.

Non-heme iron as ferrous sulfate does not interact with heme iron absorption in humans.

The absorption of heme iron has been described as distinctly different from that of non-heme iron. Moreover, whether heme and non-heme iron compete for absorption has not been well established. Our objective was to investigate the potential competition between heme and non-heme iron as ferrous sulfate for absorption, when both iron forms are ingested on an empty stomach.

Fiber orientation of the transverse carpal ligament.

The transverse carpal ligament is the volar roof of the carpal tunnel. Gross observation shows that the ligament appears to have fibers that roughly orient in the transverse direction. A closer anatomical examination shows that the ligament also has oblique fibers.

Optical nucleation of bubble clouds in a high pressure spherical resonator.

An experimental setup for nucleating clouds of bubbles in a high-pressure spherical resonator is described. Using nanosecond laser pulses and multiple phase gratings, bubble clouds are optically nucleated in an acoustic field. Dynamics of the clouds are captured using a high-speed CCD camera.

The effect of calcium on non-heme iron uptake, efflux, and transport in intestinal-like epithelial cells (Caco-2 cells).

It has been suggested that calcium inhibits the absorption of dietary iron by directly affecting enterocytes. However, it is not clear if this effect is due to a decreased uptake of iron or its efflux from enterocytes. We studied the effect of calcium on the uptake, efflux, and net absorption of non-heme iron using the intestinal-like epithelial cell line Caco-2 as an in vitro model.

Calcium does not inhibit the absorption of 5 milligrams of nonheme or heme iron at doses less than 800 milligrams in nonpregnant women.

Calcium is the only known component in the diet that may affect absorption of both nonheme and heme iron. However, the evidence for a calcium effect on iron absorption mainly comes from studies that did not isolate the effect of calcium from that of other dietary components, because it was detected in single-meal studies. Non-pituitary tumors that produce adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) exhibit resistance to the normal feedback effects of glucocorticoids on proopiomelanocortin (POMC) gene expression. This glucocorticoid resistance is typically complete, although some tumors show only relative glucocorticoid resistance in the clinical setting. The molecular mechanisms responsible for these clinical pathophysiologic observations are unknown, but might include glucocorticoid receptor defects or aberrant expression of enzymes or transporters that exclude glucocorticoids from access to their intracellular receptors.

Proximal gastric vagotomy (PGV) is a first-choice approach for the surgical treatment of duodenal peptic ulcer. However, a high percentage of recidivism takes place after this surgical strategy. The CRH test may sometimes be useful in the differential diagnosis of Cushing's syndrome, because most patients with pituitary ACTH-dependent Cushing's syndrome (Cushing's disease) respond to CRH, but those with other causes of Cushing's syndrome usually do not. However, about 10% of Cushing's disease patients fail to respond to CRH. We wondered if we could eliminate these false negative results either by exploiting the potential additive or synergistic effects of another ACTH secretagogue or by reducing glucocorticoid inhibition of CRH's ACTH-releasing effect.
