Acute kidney injury (AKI), mostly caused by renal ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury and nephrotoxins, is characterized by rapid deterioration in renal-functions without effective drug treatment available. Through activation of a G protein-coupled receptor APJ, a furin-cleaved fragment of Elabela (ELA[22-32], E11), an endogenous APJ ligand, protects against renal I/R injury. However, the poor plasma stability and relatively weak APJ-binding ability of E11 limit its application.

Natural melanin nanoplatforms have attracted attention in molecular imaging. Natural melanin can be made into small-sized nanoparticles, which penetrate tumor sites deeply, but unfortunately, the particles continue to backflow into the blood or are cleared into the surrounding tissues, leading to loss of retention within tumors. Here, we report a pH-triggered approach to aggregate natural melanin nanoparticles by introducing a hydrolysis-susceptible citraconic amide on the surface.

To better understand the interaction between SARS-CoV-2 and human host and find potential ways to block the pandemic, one of the unresolved questions is that how the virus economically utilizes the resources of the hosts. Particularly, the tRNA pool has been adapted to the host genes. If the virus intends to translate its own RNA, then it has to compete with the abundant host mRNAs for the tRNA molecules.

Ancestral adaptations in crop wild relatives can provide a genetic reservoir for crop improvement. Here we document physiological changes to mild and severe drought stress, and the associated transcriptome dynamics in both wild and cultivated chickpea. Over 60% of transcriptional changes were related to metabolism, indicating that metabolic plasticity is a core and conserved drought response.

The basal transcription factor II H (TFIIH) is a multicomponent complex. In the present study, we characterized a TFIIH subunit Tfb5 by analysing loss- and gain-of-function mutants to gain a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying stress resistance and pathogenicity in the citrus fungal pathogen Alternaria alternata. Tfb5 deficiency mutants (ΔAatfb5) decreased sporulation and pigmentation, and were impaired in the maintenance of colony surface hydrophobicity and cell wall integrity.

Pancreatic cancer is highly malignant and has a five-year survival rate of 5% due to an early lymph node, nerve, and vascular metastasis. Integrin αβ (also called very late antigen-3, VLA-3) is overexpressed in many tumors and plays a vital role in tumor formation, recurrence, and metastasis. In this study, we developed a Ga-radiolabeled peptide tracer targeting the α unit of VLA-3 and evaluated its potential application in positron emission computed tomography (PET) imaging of pancreatic cancer.

In the literature of heterogeneous water-splitting catalytic thermodynamic study, the computational hydrogen electrode (CHE) scheme is used in the majority of the cases. In this scheme, either the bare surface without O and OH decoration or a decorated phase chosen from a surface Pourbaix diagram is employed as a starting point in a four-electron reaction loop (FERL) to describe the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) process. The electrode potential that makes every step of this FERL exothermic is defined as the thermodynamic overpotential (η) of the OER reaction and is often compared with the experimental overpotential.
