Background: The deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flap is universally considered the gold standard technique for breast reconstruction (BR), though it cannot always be proposed to patients with insufficient donor-site volume. We explore the efficacy of autologous fat transfer (AFT) of the Holm abdomen zone IV in the retropectoral plane during DIEP flap reconstruction (lipo-DIEP flap), to enhance the volume provided by the abdominal donor site in patients with low body mass index (BMI).

Methods: We prospectively enrolled patients with BMI less than 25 kg/m and candidates for lipo-DIEP flap BR (group A) comparing them with a control group (group B) undergoing traditional DIEP flap BR with the same characteristics of the first group (BMI < 25 kg/m).

This study assessed the online and real-time monitoring of contaminants of emerging concern (CEC) using a microbial/tryptophan-like fluorescence sensor in a quaternary AOP (advanced oxidation process) pilot plant installed downstream of a tertiary municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). Real-time fluorescence measurements were validated with lab-scale tryptophan-like fluorescence. Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) and Breast Implant-Associated Squamous Cell Carcinoma (BIA-SCC) are emerging neoplastic complications related to breast implants. While BIA-ALCL is often linked to macrotextured implants, current evidence does not suggest an implant-type association for BIA-SCC. This study investigated the regeneration of PFAS-saturated granular activated carbons (GACs) by microwave (MW) irradiation. Two commercially available GACs (bituminous coal based GAC [BCGAC] and lignite coal based GAC [LCGAC]) were saturated with perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and then irradiated at different MW conditions (applied power = 125 - 500 W, irradiation time = 3 - 12 min). The performance of MW regeneration for PFOS- or PFOA-saturated GACs was assessed by evaluating the variation of GAC adsorption capacity (regeneration efficiency, RE) and weight loss percentage (WL).

In this study, a hydrocarbon-contaminated marine sediment was treated applying ex-situ thermal desorption (ESTD) at bench-scale. Temperatures up to 280 °C and heating times (t) in the 5-30 min range were investigated. Results revealed that temperatures in the range 200-280 °C led to Total Petrol Hydrocarbon (TPH)-removal efficiency (RE) from 75 to 85% (t = 10 min).

Transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy by vestibular approach (TOETVA) represents an innovative and scarless technique for thyroid surgery. The procedure is conducted via a three-port technique at the oral vestibule using a 10mm port for the 30° endoscope and two additional 5mm ports for the dissecting and coagulating instruments. Patients meeting the following criteria can be considered as candidates for TOETVA: (a) an ultrasonographically (US) estimated thyroid diameter =10cm; (b) US-estimated gland volume =45mL; (c) nodule size =50mm; (d) presence of a benign tumor, such as a thyroid cyst or a single- or multinodular goiter; (e) Bethesda 3 and/or 4 categories, and (f) papillary microcar-cinoma without the evidence of metastasis.

The authors reviewed their own case histories of surgical thyreopathy over the last 20 years in order to establish how many multinodular goitre (MNG) patients developed hyperthyroidism during the follow-up period. In agreement with the findings reported in literature, the authors observed that 220 out of 1117 patients with MNG developed hyperthyroidism caused by the appearance of hyperfunctioning nodules after 6-18 years from the initial diagnosis of MNG.
