The ability of a restorative material to bond and seal the interface with tooth structure is perhaps the most significant factor in determining resistance to marginal caries. Thus, the quality and durability of marginal seal and bond strength are major considerations in the selection of restorative materials. The purpose of this study was to compare the bond strength and marginal discrepancies of five adhesive systems: All-Bond 2, Clearfil Liner Bond, KB 200, ProBond and AELITE Bond.

In-vitro antimicrobial activities were measured by MIC, MBC and time-kill studies; in-vivo efficacy of each drug was assessed in an acute lethal mouse infection model that monitored median protective dose, eradicative dose and time-kill in blood. In general, for all test methods, activity of clinafloxacin exceeded that of CI-990, which in turn exceeded that of ciprofloxacin.

Clinafloxacin and trovafloxacin are two new fluoroquinolones for which few comparative data are available. When MICs of ciprofloxacin against Gram-positive and Gram-negative nosocomial species were compared, clinafloxacin was the most potent although trovafloxacin was also more active than ciprofloxacin against Staphylococcus aureus and enterococci. All three drugs were bactericidal.

In these studies, however muscle lengths were calculated by applying kinematic data from a child's joint to a normal adult model. Children with cerebral palsy and other disorders generally do not have normal bone architecture but instead have muscle attachment points and muscle paths altered by osseous deformities.

Three elastomeric impression materials were used in custom and stock trays to determine the accuracy of impressions taken from an experimental stainless steel model representing premolar and molar bridge abutment preparations. Horizontal and vertical individual abutment and interabutment dimensions were measured on die stone replicas, and the measurements compared with those obtained from stainless steel master models.

This is the second of a two-part series featuring surgeons who serve on panels, committees, and other groups that offer advice or comments on health policy issues to the federal government; Part I appeared in the September 1996 Bulletin. In their own words, these surgeons describe the issue areas they are addressing and their significance to the profession.

A series of quinolones with substitutions at the 8 position has been prepared as part of a study to examine the relationship between structural modifications at this position and activity against mycobacteria. The compounds were prepared by procedures described in the literature and were evaluated for their activities against Mycobacterium fortuitum and Mycobacterium smegmatis. The activities of the compounds against these two organisms were used as a measure of Mycobacterium tuberculosis activity.

Methods: Seventy-eight patients who underwent a complete resection of B2-C colon cancer received postoperative radiotherapy. Twenty-eight patients received < or = 45 Gy; 50 patients received 50-55 Gy.
A low power Ga-As pulse laser was used to stimulate cultured human embryonic fibroblast cells. Energy fluencies varied from 0-1 J/cm2 over a period of 1-4 days. Fibroblast procollagen production was monitored by the synthesis of [3H] hydroxyproline, and DNA replication was assessed by [3H] thymidine incorporation.
