Article Synopsis
  • - The TRILUMINATE Pivotal trial assessed the effects of tricuspid transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (T-TEER) on reducing tricuspid regurgitation (TR), a significant heart condition linked to increased health risks.
  • - Involving 572 patients, mostly elderly women with prior heart conditions, the trial found that T-TEER effectively improved quality of life, with nearly half of those treated experiencing significant improvements in heart health assessments.
  • - Results showed that while the treatment and control groups had similar rates of survival and heart-related surgeries, those who underwent T-TEER had notably better outcomes in TR severity and overall quality of life.

A distal femoral cemented modular prosthesis is a viable option for post-bone tumor and limb salvage procedures. The major reasons for implant failures are the poor quality of implants, mechanical stress, biochemical reactions, and extended period of the implant in vivo use. Rare incidences have been reported of distal femur prosthesis implant malfunctioning in a subject having osteosarcoma.

Introduction: The present study was carried out to evaluate the efficacy of ultrasound-guided triple nerve block (ilioinguinal, iliohypogastric, and genitofemoral) versus unilateral subarachnoid block for adult male patients undergoing unilateral inguinal hernia surgery.

Material And Methods: Sixty ASA I-III adult male patients > 18 years old, scheduled for unilateral inguinal hernia surgery were randomly allocated into 2 groups of 30 patients each. In Group A ( n = 30) the patients received ultrasound-guided nerve block (ilioinguinal, iliohypogastric, and genitofemoral), and in Group B ( n = 30) the patients received unilateral subarachnoid block.

Background: Long-COVID is a condition post SARS-CoV-2 infection with persistent or recurring symptoms affecting multiple organs, and may involve viral persistence, changes to the microbiome, coagulopathies, and alterations to neuro-immune interactions. These factors can disrupt the Gut-Brain Axis, which is a complex system involving bidirectional communication between the central nervous system and the gastrointestinal (GI) system. As a result of these disruptions, individuals with long-COVID may develop post-infectious functional GI disorders, which can cause a range of symptoms affecting the digestive system.

Transcatheter structural heart interventions are expanding into more complex spaces including mitral transcatheter edge-to-edge repair, left atrial appendage occlusion, tricuspid transcatheter edge-to-edge repair, mitral/tricuspid valve-in-valve, and perivalvular leak closures. Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), with concomitant fluoroscopy, has remained the gold standard for many of these interventions. Although three-dimensional intracardiac echocardiography has been used, applications were often limited to guidance for more "simple" procedures such as patent foramen ovale/atrial septal defect closure and/or intraprocedural adjunctive imaging guidance.

Purpose: A locking plate (LP) or non-locking plate (NLP) can be used for distal fibula fracture fixation. However, the advantages of LP over NLP in patients with distal fibula fractures are not clear. In terms of indications, the role of the two plates probably differs; however, to draw comparative conclusions, we conceptualized this systematic review and meta-analysis of studies that directly compared the two plates, wherein both groups' indications and baseline parameters were similar.

Pneumothorax ex vacuo (PEV) is a rare type of pneumothorax that occurs when air enters the pleural space in the chest cavity due to an increase in the volume of the lungs or a reduction in the volume of the surrounding lung tissue. Unlike a typical pneumothorax, which involves the collapse of the lung due to air accumulation, pneumothorax ex vacuo occurs when the lung itself cannot expand properly, often due to underlying lung disease or conditions such as pulmonary fibrosis or atelectasis. The mechanism is compensatory to the lung entrapment.

Atrial fibrillation is the most common arrhythmia worldwide, placing a large population at risk for potentially disabling ischemic strokes, yet an estimated 50% of eligible patients cannot tolerate or are contraindicated to receive oral anticoagulation. Within the last 15 years, transcatheter options for left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) have provided a valuable alternative to chronic oral anticoagulation for reducing risk of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation. With newer generation devices such as Watchman FLX and Amulet gaining approval from the US Food and Drug Administration in recent years, several large clinical trials have demonstrated the safety and efficacy of transcatheter LAAC in a population intolerant to systemic anticoagulation.
