Article Synopsis
  • This study compares saliva-based whole-genome sequencing (WGS) to blood-based WGS to assess accuracy and reliability.
  • A novel technique called pseudo-replication was developed to better understand the discrepancies in genotype results between the two methods.
  • The research also characterized individual salivary microbiomes using non-human DNA in saliva, finding that observed discordances mainly occurred in low-confidence genomic regions and aligning with expected results from technical replicates.

The standard of care (SOC) for the treatment of HCV genotype 2 (HCV-2) was pegylated interferon alpha plus ribavirin (PEG-IFN/RBV) at weight-based doses for a response-guided duration. The launches of sofosbuvir and daclatasvir in 2014 have resulted in new, better tolerated and shorter treatment. The combination of sofosbuvir and RBV for 12 weeks appears to be the new SOC in both European and American guidelines.

Background & Aims: Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) is the standard of care for intermediate stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and it is the most commonly used treatment for HCC worldwide. However, no prognostic indices, designed to select appropriate candidates for repeat conventional TACE, have been incorporated in the guidelines.

Methods: From January 2007 to April 2012, 139 consecutive HCC patients, mainly with an alcohol- or viral-induced disease, were treated with TACE.
