The biodiversity survey of the Cape (BioSCape), integrating remote sensing with biodiversity science.

There are repeated calls for remote sensing observations to produce accessible data products that improve our understanding and conservation of biodiversity. The Biodiversity Survey of the Cape (BioSCape) addresses this need by integrating field, airborne, satellite, and modeling datasets to advance the limits of global remote sensing of biodiversity. Over six weeks, an international team of ~150 scientists collected data across terrestrial, marine, and freshwater ecosystems in South Africa.

Provocative Findings From a Transdiagnostic Counseling Intervention to Improve Psychiatric Comorbidity and HIV Care Engagement Among People With HIV: A Pilot Randomized Clinical Trial.

Background: Depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, and alcohol/substance use disorders are prevalent among people with HIV (PWH), commonly co-occur, and predict worse HIV care outcomes. Transdiagnostic counseling approaches simultaneously address multiple co-occurring mental health disorders.

Methods: We conducted a pilot individually randomized trial of the Common Elements Treatment Approach adapted for people with HIV (CETA-PWH), a transdiagnostic counseling intervention, compared with usual care at a large academic medical center in the southern United States.

Descriptive evaluation of a camera-based dairy cattle lameness detection technology.

Lameness in dairy cattle is a clinical sign of impaired locomotion, mainly caused by painful foot lesions, compromising the US dairy industry's economic, environmental, and social sustainability goals. Combining technology and on-farm data may be a more precise and less labor-intensive lameness detection tool, particularly for early detection. The objective of this observational study was to describe the association between average weekly autonomous camera-based (AUTO) locomotion scores and hoof trimming (HT) data.

A case series of hydroxychloroquine exacerbating the dermatomyositis rash.

Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) is an antimalarial agent that is commonly used in the management of rheumatic skin disease. Few reports exist documenting exacerbation of dermatomyositis (DM) related to HCQ. Herein, we describe three adult patients with worsening DM cutaneous disease after starting HCQ and resolution or improvement with cessation.

Using Principles of an Adaptation Framework to Adapt a Transdiagnostic Psychotherapy for People With HIV to Improve Mental Health and HIV Treatment Engagement: Focus Groups and Formative Research Study.

Background: HIV treatment engagement is critical for people with HIV; however, behavioral health comorbidities and HIV-related stigma are key barriers to engagement. Treatments that address these barriers and can be readily implemented in HIV care settings are needed.

Objective: We presented the process for adapting transdiagnostic cognitive behavioral psychotherapy, the Common Elements Treatment Approach (CETA), for people with HIV receiving HIV treatment at a Southern US HIV clinic.

Diversity and Career Goals of Graduating Allopathic Medical Students Pursuing Careers in Dermatology.

Importance: Dermatology is one of the least diverse specialties, while patients from minority racial and ethnic groups and other underserved populations continue to face numerous dermatology-specific health and health care access disparities in the US.

Objectives: To examine the demographic characteristics and intended career goals of graduating US allopathic medical students pursuing careers in dermatology compared with those pursuing other specialties and whether these differ by sex, race and ethnicity, and/or sexual orientation.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This secondary analysis of a repeated cross-sectional study included 58 077 graduating allopathic medical students using data from the 2016 to 2019 Association of American Medical Colleges Graduation Questionnaires.

Invasive alien species (IAS) are a rising threat to biodiversity, national security, and regional economies, with impacts in the hundreds of billions of U.S. dollars annually.

Strategic considerations for invasive species managers in the utilization of environmental DNA (eDNA): steps for incorporating this powerful surveillance tool.

Invasive species surveillance programs can utilize environmental DNA sampling and analysis to provide information on the presence of invasive species. Wider utilization of eDNA techniques for invasive species surveillance may be warranted. This paper covers topics directed towards invasive species managers and eDNA practitioners working at the intersection of eDNA techniques and invasive species surveillance.

Most children experience resolution of idiopathic pediatric rectal prolapse with bowel management alone.

Background: Recent studies in children with idiopathic rectal prolapse report up to 48% require surgical intervention to manage refractory disease. We sought to examine outcomes of our non-surgical approach to managing rectal prolapse using a bowel management program.

Methods: A retrospective review was performed for all children with the diagnosis of rectal prolapse between 2011 and 2020.

Use of expedited post-operative protocol for children undergoing appendicostomy reduces length of hospitalization.

Background: An appendicostomy (ACE) is a surgical option for antegrade enemas in children with severe constipation and/or fecal incontinence who have failed medical management.  In 2019, we initiated an expedited post-operative protocol and sought to examine our short-term outcomes compared with our historical cohort.

Methods: A retrospective review was performed of all children undergoing ACE between 2017 and 2020.

Programmed cell death protein 1 inhibitor-induced recalcitrant mixed small and medium vessel vasculitis.

Pembrolizumab, a programmed cell death protein 1 (PD1) inhibitor, has been known to be associated with several adverse reactions, including immune related adverse events. In less than one percent of patients, PD1 inhibitors have been linked to the development of connective tissue disease. Patients with previously known connective tissue disease are hypothesized to be at increased risk of flares in as many as 40% of cases.

Hand-foot skin reaction with primarily dorsal involvement in a patient with metastatic renal cell carcinoma on cabozantinib.

A 61-year-old man with metastatic renal cell carcinoma on cabozantinib developed hand-foot skin reaction with predominantly dorsal involvement including painful violaceous plaques over the joints and keratotic yellow plaques on the palmar fingers. The medication was discontinued with resolution of the plaques and later reinitiated at a lower dose uneventfully.

A perplexing case of superficial granulomatous pyoderma with sporotrichoid-like distribution.

Superficial granulomatous pyoderma (SGP) is a rare pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) variant that differs from classic PG in that the ulcers tend to be more superficial, lack a rapidly advancing border, and are not typically associated with an underlying systemic disease. The ulcers are most commonly painless and located on the trunk, with a clean granulating base. They generally do not show undermining but may have a vegetative border.
