The growing interest in glycoconjugates expressed and released by the epithelium of the intestinal mucosa is tightly related to the multiple functional roles attributed to sialic acid and its derivatives. In the present work, biotin and HRP conjugated lectins were used to detect the sialylation pattern and to identify specific structural features of sialoderivatives in the rat colon. In particular, the occurrence and distribution of sialic acids linked alpha2,6 to D-Gal/D-GalNAc and alpha2,3 to D-Gal were directly demonstrated with SNA and MAL II binding, respectively.

There is a natural feeling between our intestinal flora and the gut. These microorganisms, living in the various tracts of human intestine, may affect the host homeostasis. Some of these bacteria can perhaps be a source of infection and sepsis when the bowel barrier is physically or functionally breached.

Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is a clinical condition characterized by a malabsorption syndrome due to an increase in microorganisms within the small intestine. The main mechanisms restricting bacterial colonization in the upper gut are the gastric acid barrier, mucosal and systemic immunity and intestinal clearance. When these mechanisms fail, bacterial overgrowth develops.

Objectives: Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth is defined as an abnormally high bacterial population level in the small intestine. Intestinal motor dysfunction associated with hypothyroidism could predispose to bacterial overgrowth. Luminal bacteria could modulate gastrointestinal symptoms and interfere with levothyroxine absorption.

Adenocarcinoma of the lung that metastasizes to the mandible is very uncommon; only a few cases have been described in the English-language literature. This article presents a metastasis from adenocarcinoma of the lung affecting the mandible of a 64-year-old woman, in which the first discovered metastatic lesion was detected before the primary tumor. The immunoreactivity for human thyroid transcription factor-1 (TTF-1) in the oral lesion was essential for determining the site and type of the primary tumor, as the patient showed no clinical or radiographic evidence of a tumor in the thyroid gland.

Article Synopsis
  • Triple therapy is commonly used to treat Helicobacter pylori infections, but issues like poor compliance and antibiotic resistance can lead to treatment failures.
  • A study involving 48 H. pylori-positive patients assessed the effectiveness of a rifaximin-based triple therapy, comparing two different antibiotic regimens for H. pylori eradication.
  • Results showed that rifaximin had good patient compliance but lower eradication rates (58% vs. 42%) when compared to standard treatments; further research is necessary to explore better dosing and combinations.

Background: Studies assessing the prevalence of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth in irritable bowel syndrome gave contrasting results. Differences in criteria to define irritable bowel syndrome patients and methods to assess small intestinal bacterial overgrowth may explain different results. Moreover, no data exist on small intestinal bacterial overgrowth prevalence in a significant population of healthy non-irritable bowel syndrome subjects.
