Pastry products constitute a significant segment of the food market. However, the high amount of fat used in their production poses a challenge when competing for the attention of modern consumers, who are more conscious of the health problems associated with the consumption of high-fat products. With this in mind, the main objective of this study is the reduction of the total fat and saturated fat contents of two bakery products, brioche-type bread and rice cake, by partial substitution of the main fat source with lipid extracts obtained through non-thermal high-pressure extraction (HPE).

Seaweeds are a renewable natural source of valuable macro and micronutrients that have attracted the attention of the scientists in the last years. Their medicinal properties were already recognized in the ancient traditional Chinese medicine, but only recently there has been a considerable increase in the study of these organisms in attempts to demonstrate their health benefits. The extraction process and conditions to be used for the obtention of value-added compounds from seaweeds depends mainly on the desired final product.

Natural Killer (NK) cells can engage multiple virally infected or tumor cells sequentially and deliver perforin for cytolytic killing of these targets. Using microscopy to visualize degranulation from individual NK cells, we found that repeated activation via the Fc receptor CD16 decreased the amount of perforin secreted. However, perforin secretion was restored upon subsequent activation via a different activating receptor, NKG2D.

According to the experience of people with schizophrenia, their psychiatrists' attitude towards the outcome of their illness is lacking in hope, which directly affects mutual faith in treatment. Here we discuss the scientific basis of hope and show its instrumental role in optimising the best treatment strategies for schizophrenia. Declaration of interest R.

Objective: Our aim was to investigate the influence of an acute exercise session on sleep pattern in rats with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE).

Methods: Twenty male Wistar rats were randomly assigned to 4 groups: control (C); acute exercise (EX); epilepsy (E) and epilepsy acute exercise (EEX). Two sleep electrocorticography recordings were performed during the light phase [baseline and day 2 (after the acute physical exercise session)].

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder with significant prevalence and the individuals affected by this disease have a great probability of occurrence of a lethal phenomenon known as Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP). SUDEP occurs mainly during the night and probably during sleep. The pathophysiological mechanisms involved in this lethal phenomenon are still obscure and new evidences that could corroborate in this area are warranted.

Animals exposed to an early adverse event may be more susceptible to a second source of stress later in life, and these stressors may have additive deleterious effects. Sleep deprivation is known to be a stressor, affecting multiple body functions such as the cognition. Modafinil enhances working memory and attention in healthy non-sleep deprived subjects and in animal models of sleep deprivation.

The aim of this study was to investigate the association between physical activity levels (occupational, sports, and leisure time activities), depression, anxiety, and epilepsy. The behavioral outcomes of individuals with epilepsy (E) were also compared with healthy control subjects (C). The sample included 31 individuals with epilepsy (12 with idiopathic generalized epilepsy and 19 with partial epilepsy) and 31 control subjects.

Sleep and epilepsy present a bidirectional interaction. Sleep complaints are common in epilepsy, and sleep deprivation may provoke seizures. However, the mechanisms underlying this relationship are unknown.

Purpose: Female sexual function is complex and may be disrupted by disease, in particular epilepsy. Chronic seizures in women can have adverse effects on reproductive function, but it has been difficult to dissociate the effects of epilepsy from those related to anticonvulsant medications. The purpose of this study was to evaluate sexual behavior in female rats submitted to pilocarpine-induced status epilepticus (SE).

The relationship between sleep and epilepsy has been well established. There is a high prevalence of sleep disturbances in epilepsy, which are associated with a decreased quality of life of individuals with epilepsy. In view of this fact, preclinical research is necessary to address many gaps in knowledge.

Although the influence of sex on sleep pattern and cardiovascular parameters is well known, knowledge regarding the effects of sleep loss on heart responses in both sexes is scarce. The present study investigated the effects of paradoxical sleep deprivation (PSD) and chronic sleep restriction (SR) on cardiovascular parameters and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) levels in male and female rats. Both groups were randomly assigned to PSD for 96 h, SR for 21 days or home-cage control.

Introduction: Epilepsy is a chronic disease that affects men and women of all ages, with different levels of severity. Many individuals with epilepsy also suffer from impairments in sexual function. However, it is difficult to differentiate between the impact of the disease and the impact of antiepileptic drugs on sexual function in human subjects.

Introduction: There is a high prevalence of erectile dysfunction (ED) in men with epilepsy; however, few studies have been conducted concerning the treatment of ED in this neurological group.

Aim: The main purpose of this review is to highlight the influence of phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor (PDEI-5) for ED on seizure susceptibility.

Methods: All available online articles with information pertaining to PDEI-5 and seizure susceptibility were included in this review.

The interaction between sleep deprivation and epilepsy has been well described in electrophysiological studies, but the mechanisms underlying this association remain unclear. The present study evaluated the effects of sleep deprivation on locomotor activity and genetic damage in the brains of rats treated with saline or pilocarpine-induced status epilepticus (SE). After 50 days of pilocarpine or saline treatment, both groups were assigned randomly to total sleep deprivation (TSD) for 6 h, paradoxical sleep deprivation (PSD) for 24 h, or be kept in their home cages.

The relationship between sleep and epilepsy has been known since ancient times, and the modulating effects of both on each other have been widely described in clinical studies. However, the mechanisms of this correlation remain unclear. Translational research is essential for filling the gaps in our knowledge, and for developing better therapeutic approaches to improve the quality of life of epileptic patients.
