The increase in anthropogenic activities has led to the release of numerous chemicals and pollutants into aquatic ecosystems, raising significant concerns for water quality and health. Among the emerging issues is the interaction between pollutants and nanomaterials (mixture effects). In this work, it was studied the combined toxicity of boron nitride nanosheets (BNNS) and cadmium (Cd) incorporating the influence of natural organic matter (NOM) to enhance ecological relevance for the first time.

The environmental risks of silica nanoparticles (SiNP) reported in the literature are contradictory and bring into question its safety for use in consumer applications. Organisms are never exposed to NPs alone in the real environment, while studies of the combined toxicity of SiNP are limited. To address this, we compared the acute toxicity of fluorescent core-shell SiNPs alone and in mixtures with Cd to Ceriodaphnia dubia in the absence and presence of NOM.

Anthropogenic activity has dramatically deteriorated aquatic ecosystems in recent years. Such environmental alterations could change the primary producers' composition, exacerbating the proliferation of harmful microorganisms such as cyanobacteria. Cyanobacteria can produce several secondary metabolites, including guanitoxin, a potent neurotoxin and the only naturally occurring anticholinesterase organophosphate ever reported in the literature.

The presence of natural organic matter such as humic acid (HA) can influence the behavior of graphene oxide (GO) in the aquatic environment. In this study, zebrafish embryos were analyzed after 5 and 7 days of exposure to GO (100 mg L) and HA (20 mg L) alone or together. The results indicated that, regardless of the presence of HA, larvae exposed to GO for 5 days showed an increase in locomotor activity, reduction in the yolk sac size, and total length and inhibition of AChE activity, but there was no difference in enzyme expression.
