Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the resistance and virulence profiles of Proteus mirabilis from patients at a hospital in Brazil between 2019 and 2022.
  • There was a notable increase in antimicrobial resistance and multidrug-resistant strains during the pandemic period compared to pre-pandemic times.
  • Patient demographics indicated that those hospitalized during the pandemic were older and had longer stays, suggesting a link between COVID-19 and rising antimicrobial resistance in this bacterium associated with UTIs and HAIs.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most common human infections, both in hospitals and in communities. Proteus mirabilis is known to cause community-acquired urinary tract infection (CA-UTI) and is an important causative agent of nosocomial UTIs. The pathogenesis of this species is related to its ability to manifest virulence factors, such as biofilms, adhesion molecules, urease, proteases, siderophores, and toxins.
