Wetland communities are increasingly threatened by multiple stressors simultaneously, such as pesticides and salinization. We examined the effects of ecologically-relevant exposures to broad-spectrum insecticides and salinization on amphibian neurodevelopment, which is strongly linked to how organisms respond behaviorally to environmental change. Prior research showed that exposure to trace concentrations of an organophosphate pesticide (chlorpyrifos) altered the brain shape and behavior of larval and metamorphic amphibians.

Sexual maturity involves the differentiation of the reproductive system, the maturation of germ cells, and the development of secondary sexual characteristics. Even though this topic has received much attention, little is known about the sequence of events that encompass reproductive maturation in anurans and what it could reveal about the developmental basis of life cycle evolution. The discovery of froglets of Pseudis minuta with incipient vocal sacs calling in breeding pools alongside several larger adult specimens with fully developed vocal sacs raised the question of the timing of sexual maturity in this species.

The study of the effects of the insecticide cypermethrin (CY) technical grade and its Sherpa® commercial formulation on Hypsiboas pulchellus tadpoles assessing lethality, behavior, growth, and abnormalities under standardized laboratory conditions is reported. Observed behaviors were identified and categorized by means of a ranking system according to the loss of mobility. Results of acute lethal effects indicate higher potency for Sherpa® at this level of assessment.

Objective/hypothesis: Bacterial biofilms are resistant to antibiotics and may contribute to persistent infections including chronic otitis media and cholesteatoma. Discovery of substances to disrupt biofilms is necessary to treat these chronic infections. Gentian violet (GV) and ferric ammonium citrate (FAC) were tested against Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms to determine if either substance can reduce biofilm volume.
