Article Synopsis
  • The recreational use of nitrous oxide (NO) has risen recently, leading to more reported cases of toxicity, particularly neurological disorders like subacute combined degeneration (SCD) and polyneuropathy due to vitamin B deficiency.
  • Two patients misusing NO exhibited symptoms resembling Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), with MRI findings of transverse myelitis and evidence of mixed polyneuropathy, indicating myeloneuropathy linked to vitamin B deficiency.
  • Symptoms improved with vitamin B treatment and stopping NO, highlighting the need for awareness of NO's neurotoxic effects, especially as its use increases.

Through GWAS studies we identified PATJ associated with functional outcome after ischemic stroke (IS). The aim of this study was to determine PATJ role in brain endothelial cells (ECs) in the context of stroke outcome. PATJ expression analyses in patient's blood revealed that: (i) the risk allele of rs76221407 induces higher expression of PATJ, (ii) PATJ is downregulated 24 h after IS, and (iii) its expression is significantly lower in those patients with functional independence, measured at 3 months with the modified Rankin scale ((mRS) ≤2), compared to those patients with marked disability (mRS = 4-5).

The use of cardiac implantable electronic devices, including permanent pacemakers, implantable cardiac defibrillators, and cardiac resynchronization therapy, has dramatically increased in recent years. The interaction between the device lead and tricuspid valve leaflets is a potential cause of tricuspid regurgitation that in turn has an impact on morbidity and mortality. Echocardiography is necessary to grade tricuspid regurgitation severity.

Global Longitudinal Strain (GLS) is a useful tool to follow-up heart transplant (HT) recipients. Important inter-vendor variability of GLS measurements has been reported in healthy subjects and different conditions, but there is still limited evidence among HT patients. We assessed the reliability and validity of GLS using two vendors (General Electric and Philips) in a group of consecutive and stable adult HT recipients.

Ischemic stroke is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide with effective acute thrombolytic treatments. However, brain repair mechanisms related to spontaneous or rehabilitation-induced recovery are still under investigation, and little is known about the molecules involved. The present study examines the potential role of angiogenin (ANG), a known regulator of cell function and metabolism linked to neurological disorders, focusing in the neurogenic subventricular zone (SVZ).

Biological response to stressors is critical to understand stress-related pathologies and vulnerability to psychiatric diseases. It is assumed that we can identify trait-like characteristics in biological responsiveness by testing subjects in a particular stressful situation, but there is scarce information on this issue. We then studied, in a normal outbred population of adult male rats (n = 32), the response of well-characterized stress markers (ACTH, corticosterone and prolactin) to different types of stressors: two novel environments (open-field, OF1 and OF2), an elevated platform (EP), forced swim (SWIM) and immobilization (IMO).

• Heart valve injuries resulting in acute valvular insufficiency are rare complications of BCT. • Aortic valve is the most frequently injured valve after BCT. • Severe regurgitation in two different valves within the same patient is extremely rare.

A simple method, based on Machine Learning Radial Basis Functions, RBF, is developed for estimating voltage stability margins in power systems. A reduced set of magnitude and angles of bus voltage phasors is used as input. Observability optimization technique for locating Phasor Measurement Units, PMUs, is applied.

Rehabilitation therapy is the only available treatment for stroke survivors presenting neurological deficits; however, the underlying molecules and mechanisms associated with functional/motor improvement during rehabilitation are poorly understood. Our aim is to study the modulation of angiogenin and endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) as repair-associated factors in a cohort of stroke patients and mouse models of rehabilitation after cerebral ischemia. The clinical study included 18 ischemic strokes admitted to an intensive rehabilitation therapy (IRT) unit, 18 non-ischemic controls and brain samples from three deceased patients.

Background And Purpose: Endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) have been extensively investigated as a therapeutic approach for repairing the vascular system in cerebrovascular diseases. Beyond vascular regeneration per se, EPCs may also release factors that affect the entire neurovascular unit. Here, we aim to study the effects of the EPC secretome on oligovascular remodeling in a mouse model of white matter injury after prolonged cerebral hypoperfusion.

Background: Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a neurological disorder characterised by bothersome symptoms associated with impaired quality of life and sleep hygiene. Rotigotine is a novel therapeutic alternative, although few studies have been published in patients on haemodialysis (HD) with RLS treated with rotigotine.

Objectives: 1.

New neuroreparative and neuroprotective therapies are being sought to treat stroke patients. One approach is the remodeling of extracellular matrix, which participates in both brain injury and neurovascular repair when matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are thought to be key players. Our aim was to investigate the role of MMP-13 (collagenase-3) in the acute (24h and 3days) and delayed (2weeks) phases of stroke.

Exposure to chronic unpredictable stress (CUS) is gaining acceptance as a putative animal model of depression. However, there is evidence that chronic exposure to stress can offer non-specific stress protection from some effects of acute superimposed stressors. We then compared in adult male rats the protection afforded by prior exposure to CUS with the one offered by repeated immobilization on boards (IMO) regarding some of the negative consequences of an acute exposure to IMO.

The species Perna viridis is a highly consumed species, which fast growth makes it an interesting aquaculture alternative for Venezuelan and Trinidad coasts. With the aim to contribute with its nutritional value information, this study analyzed lipid and fatty acid contents from samples taken in five locations from Eastern Venezuela and three from Trinidad West Coast. Total lipids were extracted and quantified, from a pooled sample of 100 organisms per location, by standard gravimetric methods, and their identification and quantification was done by TLC/FID (Iatroscan system).

Objective: We occasionally observe cranial synkinesias that involve a lateral jaw movement ipsilateral to the horizontal gaze deviation in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients and normal subjects. We term this conjugated movement 'ocular-jaw synkinesia' (OJS). The clinical and electrophysiological features of OJS are described in this study.
