Article Synopsis
  • The systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the effectiveness of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) as an addition to non-surgical periodontal treatment (NSPT) for patients with HIV and periodontitis.
  • The analysis included four studies, which showed a significant reduction in microbial load and improved clinical parameters, such as probing depth and clinical attachment loss, in the aPDT-treated group compared to NSPT alone.
  • The studies had a low risk of bias, and the overall certainty of evidence was rated as moderate, suggesting that aPDT is a promising therapy for this patient population.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated the effectiveness of a combination of arginine (Arg), calcium glycerophosphate (CaGP), and fluoride (F) in preventing dental biofilm and cavities.
  • Using an experimental biofilm model, various treatment groups were tested for their impact on bacterial growth, surface hardness loss, and mineral content in tooth enamel.
  • Results showed that the combination of Arg, F, and CaGP significantly reduced enamel hardness loss and harmful bacteria compared to controls, highlighting its potential for better dental health.

Objectives: This systematic review and meta-analysis (SRM) aimed to evaluate the efficacy of laser phototherapy (LPT) on the reduction in postoperative pain (PP) of endodontic origin after conventional/non-surgical reintervention of root canals.

Methods: This SRM was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42021243500) and followed the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis. Meta-analysis was conducted using R software with the "META" package, the mean difference (MD) measure of effect was calculated, and the fixed effect model was applied with a 95% confidence interval (CI).

Introduction: The decline in dental caries has been attributed to the widespread use of fluoride (F). Two forms of presentation are fluoridated toothpaste (FT) and mouthwash (MW), widely used by the population.

Materials And Methods: This study aimed to evaluate in vitro the effects of combining FT and MW, whether supplemented with sodium trimetaphosphate (TMP) or not, on dental enamel demineralization.

To evaluate the effect of 1100 ppm F toothpastes supplemented with micrometric or nanosized β-CaGP (β-CaGPm/β-CaGPn) on artificial enamel remineralization, using a pH cycling model. Enamel blocks with artificial caries were randomly allocated into ten groups (n = 10), according to the toothpastes: without fluoride/β-CaGPm/β-CaGPn (negative control); 1100 ppm F (1100F); 1100F plus 0.125%, 0.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare the effectiveness of bioceramic sealers versus AH Plus® sealers in terms of how well they penetrate dentinal tubules and their ability to fight bacteria.
  • A systematic review and meta-analysis of 54 eligible studies revealed no significant differences in penetration capacity or antimicrobial activity between the two types of sealers across various tooth regions.
  • The findings suggest that both bioceramic and AH Plus® sealers are equally effective and can be used effectively in clinical dental practice, with the studies showing a low risk of bias.

This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the efficacy of dexlansoprazole (a proton pump inhibitor-PPI) in resolving heartburn, reflux, and other symptoms and complications resulting from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). The study followed PRISMA 2020 and was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42020206513). The search strategy used MeSH and free terms appropriately adapted for each database.

The primary objective of this in vitro study was to investigate the erosive potential of enamel under the use of clear aligners (CA), by simulating in vivo conditions experienced by patients who do not remove their CA during the consumption of acidic beverages. In addition, the difference in erosion protection conferred by artificial and human saliva was also evaluated. Sound-extracted human premolars (n = 20) had half of their surfaces protected with acid-resistant nail polish and were randomly distributed into two experimental groups (n = 10): teeth immersed in human saliva or artificial saliva.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess how adding sodium fluoride (F) and nano-sized sodium trimetaphosphate (TMPnano) to a hydrogen peroxide bleaching gel affects enamel color changes, mechanical properties, and how hydrogen peroxide penetrates tooth layers.
  • Bovine enamel and dentin discs were treated with various bleaching gels, and outcomes such as color alteration and enamel properties were measured using different methods, including scanning electron microscopy.
  • Results indicated that gels containing F and TMPnano maintained whitening effects while reducing enamel damage and morphological changes, suggesting they may enhance the safety and effectiveness of whitening treatments.

The mastoid process has attracted the attention of several researchers due to its protected position at the base of the skull and the fact that it is relatively compact, in addition to being highly resistant and dimorphic, considered as a gold standard anatomical structure in the determination of the sexual dimorphism of skulls. However, intrinsic and extrinsic factors may influence this anatomical structure over time, providing contradictory and ambiguous data. Therefore, other anatomical structures need to be evaluated concurrently with the mastoid process to provide better accuracy and reliability of skull sexual dimorphism data.

Article Synopsis
  • The determination of sex from skulls is crucial in forensic Medicine and Dentistry, utilizing morphological and metric differences.
  • Photogrammetry offers an affordable way to analyze skull characteristics for sex identification, but there's a lack of systematic reviews confirming its reliability.
  • This systematic review concluded that photogrammetry is a valid and reliable method for determining sexual dimorphism in dry skulls, based on a thorough analysis of relevant studies.
