Focusing on experts: Expectations of healthcare professionals regarding the use of telemedicine in intensive care units.

Objectives: Telemedical applications are solutions to challenges in the healthcare system. However, it is unclear what intensive care unit healthcare professionals expect from such solutions. This study investigated the expectations and concerns of nurses and physicians when implementing telemedicine tools in intensive care units (tele-ICU).

A call for increased inclusivity and global representation in pharmacogenetic testing.

Commercial pharmacogenetic testing panels capture a fraction of the genetic variation underlying medication metabolism and predisposition to adverse reactions. In this study we compared variation in six pharmacogenes detected by whole genome sequencing (WGS) to a targeted commercial panel in a cohort of 308 individuals with family history of pediatric heart disease. In 1% of the cohort, WGS identified rare variants that altered the interpretation of metabolizer status and would thus prevent potential errors in gene-based dosing.

Growth and Nutritional Outcomes in Children Post-Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant without Exposure to Total Body Irradiation.

Aims: Poor growth in childhood cancer survivors who undergo haematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) without exposure to radiation is reported anecdotally, although literature to support this is limited. The aims of this study were to assess the change in height standard deviation score (SDS) and the final adult height (FAH) in children who underwent chemotherapy-only conditioned HSCT and to identify predictors of poor growth.

Materials And Methods: We conducted a retrospective hospital medical record review (1984-2010) of children (1-10 years) who underwent chemotherapy-only conditioned HSCT, noting anthropology measurements at cancer diagnosis, HSCT, 10 years old and FAH.

Purpose: Across Hong Kong, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, (referred to as Asia) approximately 30-53 million individuals of the 151 million employed suffer from allergic rhinitis (AR) and urticaria. It is estimated that approximately 90% of patients with these allergic conditions are insufficiently treated, impacting the socioeconomic burden in terms of absence from work and decreased productivity. This study aims to estimate the socioeconomic burden of allergies in Asia and the cost savings that their adequate management can provide.

Background: Allergic diseases are on the rise in many parts of the world, including the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region. Second-generation antihistamines are the first-line treatment option in the management of allergic rhinitis and urticaria. International guidelines describe the management of these conditions; however, clinicians perceive the additional need to tailor treatment according to patient profiles.

Leprosy is a skin disease that accounts for serious deformities and disabilities, leading to stigmatization and psychosocial suffering. It is included in "The Neglected Tropical Diseases". Background And Purpose: Although used clinically to prevent stroke, there are few examples of anticoagulant investigations in the treatment of acute thromboembolic stroke in animal models. The treatment of thromboembolic stroke in experimental models has been investigated almost exclusively around the use of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA). In this study, using a rat thromboembolic stroke model, we investigated the use of an inhibitory anti-factor IX(a) monoclonal antibody (SB 249417) for the treatment of thromboembolic stroke and compared its efficacy to that of tPA.

Utilization of psychotherapy by lesbians, gay men, and bisexuals: findings from a nationwide survey.

Based on a survey of the psychotherapy histories of 600 lesbians, gay men, and bisexuals, the number, duration, and circumstances of each therapy episode, and respondents' views of their therapists and of therapy, are reported. Findings suggest that lesbians and gay men are among the most active and satisfied--but least acknowledged--consumers of psychotherapy. Routine inclusion of sexual orientation as a demographic variable in mental health services research is proposed.
