In the context of the near-global eradication of wild poliovirus, the significance of non-polio enteroviruses (NPEVs) in causing acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) and their impact on public health has gained increased attention. This research, conducted from 2001 to 2021, examined stool samples from 1597 children under 15 years in São Paulo, Brazil, through the AFP/Poliomyelitis Surveillance Program, detecting NPEVs in 6.9% of cases.

Herein we attempt to display the usefulness of the mitochondrial gene Cytochrome Oxidase I-coI in classical and barcode-based approaches for Leishmania characterization. A total of 228 samples were analyzed, comprising 28 Leishmania related taxa, mainly from cultures of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation`s Leishmania Collection.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: The Leishmania genome harbors formerly active short interspersed degenerated retroposons (SIDERs) representing the largest family of repetitive elements among trypanosomatids. Their substantial expansion in Leishmania is a strong predictor of important biological functions. In this study, we combined multilevel bioinformatic predictions with high-throughput genomic and transcriptomic analyses to gain novel insights into the diversified roles retroposons of the SIDER2 subfamily play in Leishmania genome evolution and expression.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness and accuracy of prolactin levels in predicting the etiology of nonphysiological hyperprolactinemia.
Subjects And Methods: In this retrospective study, we reviewed medical records of patients with nonphysiological hyperprolactinemia seen at two neuroendocrine reference centers located in Recife, Brazil, from January 2000 to December 2019.
The turtle shell is a remarkable structure that has intrigued not only evolutionary biologists but also engineering and material scientists because of its multi-scale complexity and various functions. Although protection is its most apparent role, the carapace and plastron are also related to many physiological functions and their shape influences hydrodynamics and self-righting ability. As such, analysing the functional morphology of the shell could help understanding the ecology of Triassic stem-turtles, which will contribute to the century-long debate on the evolutionary origins of turtles.

We explored the association between the severity of ASD symptoms in children and the mental health of their mothers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our study included 1,924 mothers of children with ASD, enrolled in a web-based cross-sectional survey over 85 consecutive days to gather clinical and sociodemographic data.

While turbinals are well known in some groups, their diversity is poorly understood at the scale of placental mammals, which span 21 orders. Here, we investigated the turbinal bones and associated lamellae for one representative of each extant order of placental mammals.

This study aims to evaluate the pain and function of patients diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis after undergoing ultrasound-guided genicular nerve blockade using pharmacological agents.
Methods: The study included 36 patients diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis, comprising 17 bilateral cases, totaling 53 knees undergoing UGNB using a mixture of triamcinolone, ropivacaine, and lidocaine under ultrasound guidance.
Paleopathology, the study of diseases and injuries from the fossil record, allows for a unique view into the life of prehistoric animals. Pathologies have nowadays been described in nearly all groups of fossil vertebrates, especially dinosaurs. Despite the large number of skeletons, pathologies had never been reported in the sauropodomorph Plateosaurus trossingensis.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFLate Jurassic rhynchocephalians from the Solnhofen Archipelago have been known for almost two centuries. The number of specimens and taxa is constantly increasing, but little is known about the ontogeny of these animals. The well-documented marine taxon Pleurosaurus is one of such cases.

Methods: A minimum two-year follow-up prospective cohort study was conducted on consecutive patients with symptomatic CHT deformities of the second toe corrected with percutaneous surgery. Primary outcomes included satisfaction, recurrence, bony union, and other complication rates specific to the second toe deformity correction.
The Prune-Belly (Eagle-Barrett) syndrome (PBS) is a congenital and genetically heterogeneous disease, more prevalent in males, defined by the clinical triad (1) deficiency of abdominal muscles, (2) bilateral cryptorchidism, and (3) urinary tract abnormalities. The abdomen of an infant with PBS has a typical appearance, similar to the aspect of a prune, which gives it its name. Although the etiology of this disorder is still unknown, numerous theories, mutations, and genetic disturbances have been proposed to explain the origin of PBS.

In an effort to minimize the learning curve and address the variability associated with technical corrections and screw placement, we have initiated the creation of personalized patient-specific instrumentation guides using 3D printing. Our hypothesis is that this approach will enhance safety, precision, decrease surgical time, and reduce exposure to radiation.

Among the proteins of SARS-CoV-2, non-structural protein 12 (NSP12) plays a key role during COVID infection and is part of the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase complex. The monitoring of NSP12 polymorphisms is extremely important for the design of new antiviral drugs and monitoring of viral evolution.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been growing substantially in information technology and various commercial industries. Machine learning (ML), a branch of AI, has been shown to expand the capabilities and potential of echocardiography.

The aim of this study is to evaluate a series of patients undergoing HV correction using the MICA technique without screw fixation of the Akin osteotomy.
Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 58 consecutive patients who underwent surgical correction for HV between August 2018 and March 2020.
Background: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL), or kala-azar, is a common comorbidity in patients with AIDS in endemic areas. Many patients continue to experiences relapses of VL despite virological control, but with immunological failure. These patients remain chronically symptomatic with hypersplenism, for example with anemia, leukopenia, and thrombocytopenia, and are at risk of severe co-infection due to low CD4+ count.

The aim of this study was to investigate if sesamoid coverage was associated with worse clinical outcomes at 12-month follow-up following percutaneous hallux valgus surgery.
Methods: Retrospective comparative observational study of clinical and radiographic outcomes based on a previously published prospective dataset.
Purpose: Plantar fasciitis (PF) is a main source of heel pain, and only about one-third of patients have bilateral symptomatic involvement, although age, body mass index (BMI), and physical activities are known risk factors. The high prevalence of unilateral involvement is poorly understood. We aimed to assess the potential association between PF and the leg length discrepancy (LLD) in unilateral PF.
