Prevalence and risk factors of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis in Cubal, Angola: a prospective cohort study.

Background: Although the Republic of Angola is one of the 14 countries figuring in the three high tuberculosis (TB) burden country lists, the true multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) situation is unknown.

Material And Methods: Patients aged 16 years with a diagnosis of pulmonary TB were prospectively enrolled from June 2014 to July 2015. Sputum samples were collected for culture and drug susceptibility testing in all patients, and for Xpert MTB/RIF testing in all previously treated patients and in new patients whose sputum remained smear-positive after 2 months of treatment.

Stage II-III colon cancer: a comparison of survival calculators.

Background: Individualized postoperative survival calculators for patients with cancer can be an aid for predicting prognosis and clinical decision making, such as the use of adjuvant chemotherapy. The aim of this study was to compare existing survival calculators for colon cancer and determine their performance using an independent cohort of patients.

Methods: A retrospective analysis of a multi-site institutional experience was performed on patients diagnosed with stage II-III colon cancer between January 2012 and March 2013.

Measurement of Antiproton Production in p-He Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=110 GeV.

The cross section for prompt antiproton production in collisions of protons with an energy of 6.5 TeV incident on helium nuclei at rest is measured with the LHCb experiment from a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.5  nb^{-1}.

Health Belief Model Scale and Theory of Planned Behavior Scale to assess attitudes and perceptions of injury prevention program participation: An exploratory factor analysis.

Objectives: To examine the psychometric properties of the Health Belief Model Scale (HBMS) and Theory of Planned Behavior Scale (TPBS), and determine construct validity by evaluating which subscales were most associated with intention to participate in an Exercise-related Injury Prevention Program (ERIPP) within physically active adults.

Design: Cross-sectional.

Methods: Two hundred and eighty-four physically active individuals volunteered to participate in this study and completed the HBMS and TPBS on one occasion.

First Observation of the Doubly Charmed Baryon Decay Ξ_{cc}^{++}→Ξ_{c}^{+}π^{+}.

The doubly charmed baryon decay Ξ_{cc}^{++}→Ξ_{c}^{+}π^{+} is observed for the first time, with a statistical significance of 5.9σ, confirming a recent observation of the baryon in the Λ_{c}^{+}K^{-}π^{+}π^{+} final state. The data sample used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.

Optimizing and evaluating biomarker combinations as trial-level general surrogates.

We extend the method proposed in a recent work by the Authors for trial-level general surrogate evaluation to allow combinations of biomarkers and provide a procedure for finding the "best" combination of biomarkers based on the absolute prediction error summary of surrogate quality. We use a nonparametric Bayesian model that allows us to select an optimal subset of biomarkers without having to consider a large number of explicit model specifications for that subset. This dramatically reduces the number of model comparisons needed.

Intraoperative fluid restriction in hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy.

Background: Multiple studies highlight the importance of liberal fluid administration in cytoreductive surgery (CRS) with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). Over-resuscitation can delay recovery and wound healing. We report an intraoperative protocol that restricts fluid administration and minimizes morbidity.

Predictive cluster level surrogacy in the presence of interference.

Surrogate evaluation is a difficult problem that is made more so by the presence of interference. Our proposed procedure can allow for relatively easy evaluation of surrogates for indirect or spill-over clinical effects at the cluster level. Our definition of surrogacy is based on the causal-association paradigm (Joffe and Greene, 2009.

Measurement of the Ω_{c}^{0} Baryon Lifetime.

We report a measurement of the lifetime of the Ω_{c}^{0} baryon using proton-proton collision data at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0  fb^{-1} collected by the LHCb experiment. The sample consists of about 1000  Ω_{b}^{-}→Ω_{c}^{0}μ^{-}ν[over ¯]_{μ}X signal decays, where the Ω_{c}^{0} baryon is detected in the pK^{-}K^{-}π^{+} final state and X represents possible additional undetected particles in the decay.

Measurement of Angular and CP Asymmetries in D^{0}→π^{+}π^{-}μ^{+}μ^{-} and D^{0}→K^{+}K^{-}μ^{+}μ^{-} Decays.

The first measurements of the forward-backward asymmetry of the dimuon pair (A_{FB}), the triple-product asymmetry (A_{2ϕ}), and the charge-parity-conjugation asymmetry (A_{CP}), in D^{0}→π^{+}π^{-}μ^{+}μ^{-} and D^{0}→K^{+}K^{-}μ^{+}μ^{-} decays are reported. They are performed using data from proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb experiment from 2011 to 2016, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 5  fb^{-1}. The asymmetries are measured to be A_{FB}(D^{0}→π^{+}π^{-}μ^{+}μ^{-})=(3.

The Volume-Outcome Relationship in Retroperitoneal Soft Tissue Sarcoma: Evidence of Improved Short- and Long-Term Outcomes at High-Volume Institutions.

Background: We sought to study the association between RPS case volume and outcomes. Although a relationship has been demonstrated between case volume and patient outcomes in some cancers, such a relationship has not been established for retroperitoneal sarcomas (RPSs).

Study Design: The National Cancer Database (NCDB) was queried for patients undergoing treatment for primary RPS diagnosed between 2004 and 2013.

Assessing the Impact of Circulating Tumor DNA (ctDNA) in Patients With Colorectal Cancer: Separating Fact From Fiction.

Significant advances and increased awareness have been in made in the field of non-invasive liquid biopsies for cancer, spanning several malignancies from gastrointestinal, pulmonary, and other etiologies. Broadly, the genetic source material for liquid biopsies includes circulating tumor cells, cell-free circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA), or cell-free circulating tumor microRNA (mRNA). In this review, we specifically focus on ctDNA and its current role in colorectal cancer.

Measurement of the Lifetime of the Doubly Charmed Baryon Ξ_{cc}^{++}.

The first measurement of the lifetime of the doubly charmed baryon Ξ_{cc}^{++} is presented, with the signal reconstructed in the final state Λ_{c}^{+}K^{-}π^{+}π^{+}. The data sample used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.7  fb^{-1}, collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV.

Association of Clinicopathologic and Molecular Markers on Stage-specific Survival of Right Versus Left Colon Cancer.

Background: Previous studies have shown that variability in molecular markers correlates with poorer survival outcomes in patients with right-sided colon cancer (RCC) compared with left-sided colon cancer (LCC). However, several studies have shown conflicting results when examined stage for stage. We examined RCC and LCC to assess for differences in histopathologic features and overall survival (OS).

Safety and immunogenicity of Pfs25H-EPA/Alhydrogel, a transmission-blocking vaccine against Plasmodium falciparum: a randomised, double-blind, comparator-controlled, dose-escalation study in healthy Malian adults.

Background: Pfs25H-EPA is a protein-protein conjugate transmission-blocking vaccine against Plasmodium falciparum that is safe and induces functional antibodies in malaria-naive individuals. In this field trial, we assessed Pfs25H-EPA/Alhydrogel for safety and functional immunogenicity in Malian adults.

Methods: This double-blind, randomised, comparator-controlled, dose-escalation trial in Bancoumana, Mali, was done in two staggered phases, an initial pilot safety assessment and a subsequent main phase.

A novel anesthesiologist-led multidisciplinary model for evaluating high-risk surgical patients at a comprehensive cancer center.

The objective of this retrospective analysis was to describe the development and implementation of an anesthesiologist-led multidisciplinary committee to evaluate high-risk surgical patients in order to improve surgical appropriateness. The study was conducted in an anesthesia preoperative evaluation clinic at an academic comprehensive cancer center. One hundred sixty-seven high-risk surgical patients with cancer-related diagnoses were evaluated and discussed at a High-Risk Committee (HRC) meeting to determine surgical appropriateness and optimize perioperative care.

Amplitude Analysis of the Decay B[over ¯]^{0}→K_{S}^{0}π^{+}π^{-} and First Observation of the CP Asymmetry in B[over ¯]^{0}→K^{*}(892)^{-}π^{+}.

The time-integrated untagged Dalitz plot of the three-body hadronic charmless decay B[over ¯]^{0}→K_{S}^{0}π^{+}π^{-} is studied using a pp collision data sample recorded with the LHCb detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0  fb^{-1}. The decay amplitude is described with an isobar model.

Disparities in major surgery for esophagogastric cancer among hospitals by case volume.

Background: The purpose of this study was to characterize disparities among centers performing major surgery for esophageal or gastric cancer stratified by case volume.

Methods: The National Cancer Data Base (NCDB) was queried for cases of esophagectomy or total gastrectomy. Centers were compared based on number of cases during 2004-2013: low volume [1-99], middle [100-200], and high [>200].

Total body CD4+ T cell dynamics in treated and untreated SIV infection revealed by in vivo imaging.

The peripheral blood represents only a small fraction of the total number of lymphocytes in the body. To develop a more thorough understanding of T cell dynamics, including the effects of SIV/SHIV/HIV infection on immune cell depletion and immune reconstitution following combination antiretroviral therapy (cART), one needs to utilize approaches that allow direct visualization of lymphoid tissues. In the present study, noninvasive in vivo imaging of the CD4+ T cell pool has revealed that the timing of the CD4+ T cell pool reconstitution following initiation of ART in SIV-infected nonhuman primates (NHPs) appears seemingly stochastic among clusters of lymph nodes within the same host.

Intra-arterial Versus Intravenous Adoptive Cell Therapy in a Mouse Tumor Model.

Adoptive cell transfer therapy for cancer has existed for decades and is experiencing a resurgence in popularity that has been facilitated by improved methods of production, techniques for genetic modification, and host preconditioning. The trafficking of adoptively transferred lymphocytes and infiltration into the tumor microenvironment is sine qua non for successful tumor eradication; however, the paradox of extremely poor trafficking of lymphocytes into the tumor microenvironment raises the issue of how best to deliver these cells to optimize entry into tumor tissue. We examined the route of administration as a potential modifier of both trafficking and antitumor efficacy.

Laparoscopic proximal gastrectomy for gastric neoplasms.

Background: For cancers of the distal gastroesophageal junction or the proximal stomach, proximal gastrectomy can be performed. It is associated with several perioperative benefits compared with total gastrectomy. The use of laparoscopic proximal gastrectomy (LPG) has become an increasingly popular approach for select tumors.

Evidence for the Rare Decay Σ^{+}→pμ^{+}μ^{-}.

A search for the rare decay Σ^{+}→pμ^{+}μ^{-} is performed using pp collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies sqrt[s]=7 and 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3  fb^{-1}. An excess of events is observed with respect to the background expectation, with a signal significance of 4.1 standard deviations.
