Background:  Two common surgical approaches for breast cancer are breast-conserving surgery and mastectomy with implant-based breast reconstruction (MIBR). However, for large tumors, an alternative to MIBR is oncoplastic surgery with volume replacement (OPSVR). We performed a comprehensive analysis comparing OPSVR with MIBR, with our aim to focus on the 30-day postoperative complications between these two techniques.

Background: The popularity of liposculpture has increased due to the high patient satisfaction rate and low number of complications. However, in Latin America, serious complications have been reported due to various factors. Therefore, our objective was to determine the association of a BMI of 30 kg/m or more with the development of postoperative complications in patients undergoing liposculpture.

Introduction: Breast pathology is a very common reason for medical attention. Tissue diagnosis is usually obtained with core needle biopsy which could be performed by breast surgeons or interventional radiologists. Our aim was to assess the comparison of diagnostic performance between the two services.

Background: Previous studies have reported cases of primary melanoma of the breast parenchyma (PMBP), but the pathogenesis of this disease remains poorly understood. We review the presentation and outcomes of reported cases and provide detailed pathological analysis of four additional cases. Furthermore, we discuss potential theories regarding the pathogenesis of this clinical presentation.

Article Synopsis
  • Oncoplastic surgery (OPS) is a growing method for breast cancer treatment that combines larger partial mastectomy resections with reconstruction techniques, but there's limited evidence on its effectiveness, especially for high-risk types like TNBC and HER2+.
  • A study analyzed data from over 24,000 high-risk breast cancer patients to compare breast cancer-specific survival (BCSS) and surgical complications between OPS with radiotherapy (OPS + RT), partial mastectomy with radiotherapy (PM + RT), and total mastectomy without radiotherapy (MTX-RT).
  • Results showed that OPS + RT had the best 5-year BCSS rates (97.1%), lower complication rates (1

Background: Oncoplastic breast surgery (OBS) is a form of breast conservation surgery (BCS) that involves a partial mastectomy followed by immediate volume displacement or volume replacement surgical techniques. To date, there are few studies evaluating OBS in older patients. Therefore, we sought to determine if outcomes differed between patients 65 years and older versus younger patients who underwent oncoplastic surgical procedures.

Introduction: The worldwide incidence of melanoma has increased in the last 40 years. Our aim was to describe the clinic-pathological characteristics and outcomes of three cohorts of patients diagnosed with melanoma in a Latin-American cancer institute during the last 20 years.

Methods: We evaluated three retrospective patient cohorts diagnosed with melanoma at Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Neoplasicas (INEN), a public hospital in Lima, Peru, for the years 2005-2006, 2010-2011, and 2017-2018.

Introduction: The anastomotic leak (AL) is one of the most feared complications of colorectal surgery, since it is associated with a high rate of morbidity, mortality, length of hospital stay and cost of care. Our aim was to determine the risk factors associated with anastomosis leak in colorectal cancer patients who underwent surgical resection with anastomosis.

Methods: A multicentre observational, analytical, retrospective and case-control study was carried out.

Breast cancer remains a significant cause of death for women globally, despite advancements in detection and treatment, low- and middle-income countries face unique obstacles. Role of Research Working Group (RWG) can expedite research progress by fostering collaboration between scientists, clinicians, and stakeholders. Benefits of a Global RWG include pooling resources and expertise to develop new research ideas, addressing disparities, and building local research capacity, with the potential to improve breast cancer research and outcomes.

Background: Tranexamic acid (TXA) has demonstrated promising outcomes in plastic surgery. Our aim was to assess the effect of TXA in intraoperative bleeding, operative time, and complications among patients undergoing facial surgical procedures.

Methods: A retrospective cohort study of patients who underwent multiplane facial rhytidectomy from January 2018 to September 2022 at the Clinica Ziegler, Lima, Peru.

Background: The keystone perforator island flap (KPIF) was described almost a decade ago. However, this flap has only recently been recognized for its advantages in various clinical applications in plastic surgery. A better understanding of the versatility of KPIFs can help promote the widespread adoption of this technique for complex wounds in various anatomical regions.

Background: Evidence regarding differences in survival associated with the site of metastasis in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) remains limited. Our aim was to analyze the overall survival (OS), distant relapse free survival (DRFS), and survival since the diagnosis of the relapse (MS), according to the side of metastasis.

Methods: This was a retrospective study of TNBC patients with distant metastases at the Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Neoplasicas (Lima, Peru) from 2000 to 2014.

Breast-implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) is a non-Hodgkin lymphoma that arises in the space between the surface of a breast implant and the fibrous capsule that grows around the implant. Since its first description 20 years ago, almost 1000 cases of BIA-ALCL have been diagnosed worldwide. Nowadays, guidelines describe the diagnosis, staging, and treatment of this disease.

Introduction: Oncoplastic surgery is an important component of the management of breast cancer. As prognosis has improved, the need for proficient techniques to achieve disease eradication while maintaining cosmesis for naturally appearing breasts has gained importance. This study describes an easy-to-learn modified oncoplastic technique for patients undergoing breast-conserving treatment.

Background: Melanoma causes most skin cancer-related deaths, and disparities in mortality persist. Rural communities, compared to urban, face higher levels of poverty and more barriers to care, leading to higher stage at presentation and shorter survival in melanoma. To further evaluate these disparities, we sought to assess the association between rurality and melanoma cause-specific mortality and receipt of recommended surgery in a national cohort.

Introduction: Despite advances in oncologic care, racial and socio-economic outcome disparities persist in non-ocular melanoma patients. However, the unmet need is understanding the population at risk for late tumor stage at diagnosis. We sought to analyze the groups with an increased risk of unfavorable tumor stage at diagnosis.

The recommended first-line chemotherapy agents for managing Kaposi sarcoma (KS) in high-income countries are expensive and often unavailable in developing nations such as Peru. Limited data exist on whether management practices in these countries affect patient outcomes. We assessed the real-world treatment approaches and outcomes of patients with KS in Peru.

Background: Previous studies have reported a higher prevalence of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) in US Hispanic/Latina populations. However, survival outcomes and treatment approaches over time in Latin American females are scarcely reported. We aimed to evaluate the temporal variation in treatment patterns and overall survival (OS) outcomes of females with TNBC according to cancer stage.

Background: Obesity has nearly tripled in the last 50 years. During the last decades, oncoplastic breast surgery has become an important choice in the surgical treatment of breast cancer. An association exists between higher body mass index (BMI) and wound complications for major operations, but there is scarce literature on oncoplastic surgery.

Primary cardiac angiosarcomas (PCA) are highly aggressive malignant heart tumors. Previous reports have shown a poor prognosis regardless of management, and no consensus or guidelines exist. It is necessary to clarify this information since patients with PCA have a short survival.

Breast surgery is performed to achieve local control in patients with breast cancer. Visualization of the anatomy with a virtual reality software platform reconstructed from magnetic resonance imaging data improves surgical planning with regards to volume and localization of the tumor, lymph nodes, blood vessels, and surrounding tissue to perform oncoplastic tissue rearrangement. We report the use and advantages of virtual reality added to the magnetic resonance imaging assessment in a 36-year-old woman with breast cancer who underwent nipple sparing mastectomy with tissue expander reconstruction.
