Energy produced from renewable sources such as sun or wind are intermittent, depending on circumstantial factors. This fact explains why energy supply and demand do not match. In this context, the interest in biomethanation has increased as an interesting contribution to the Power-to-gas concept (P2G), transforming the extra amount of produced electricity into methane (CH).

Rationale: Evidence-based guidelines recommend screening all individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) for the genetic disorder alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD). However, it is estimated that only 5% of people with COPD have been tested for AATD, and a large fraction of the estimated 70,000 to 100,000 Americans with AATD have not yet been diagnosed. Low familiarity with AATD and limited knowledge about diagnostic tests and available treatments contribute to suboptimal screening rates.

Background And Aims: Gambling activity evolves along a continuum from recreational to Gambling Disorder (GD) and a particular challenge is to identify whether there are some neurophysiological particularities already present in gamblers at an early stage. Our main goal was to determine whether, in the gamblers' population, neural responses generated during uncertain decisions were different depending on problematic gambling risk defined by the Canadian Problem Gambling Index (CPGI). We tested the following hypothesis, that the Problem Gambling group would show a different brain activity related to outcomes processing than people with low risk.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates how plasma brain-derived tau (BD-Tau) can predict outcomes for patients with acute ischemic stroke who undergo endovascular therapy (EVT), potentially improving prognosis after EVT trials initiated in 2015.
  • Two independent patient cohorts with large vessel occlusion were analyzed, measuring various plasma biomarkers pre- and post-EVT, with 90-day functional outcomes assessed using standardized scales.
  • Results show that while GFAP was strong for early imaging outcomes, BD-Tau was more effective for predicting long-term functional recovery, leading to the development of a predictive model that proved effective across both cohorts.

Intro: Electroencephalography (EEG) is a technique for measuring brain activity that is widely used in neuroscience research. Event-related potentials (ERPs) in the EEG make it possible to study sensory and cognitive processes in the brain. Previous reports have shown that aerobic exercise can have an impact on components of ERPs such as amplitude and latency.

Adaptive decision-making requires consideration of objective risks and rewards associated with each option, as well as subjective preference for risky/safe alternatives. Inaccurate risk/reward estimations can engender excessive risk-taking, a central trait in many psychiatric disorders. The lateral orbitofrontal cortex (lOFC) has been linked to many disorders associated with excessively risky behavior and is ideally situated to mediate risky decision-making.

The sulfate-reduction process plays a crucial role in the biological valorization of SO gases. However, a complete understanding of the sulfidogenic process in bioreactors is limited by the lack of technologies for characterizing the sulfate-reducing activity of immobilized biomass. In this work, we propose a flow-cell bioreactor (FCB) for characterizing sulfate-reducing biomass using HS microsensors to monitor HS production in real-time within a biofilm.

Practitioners of digital health are familiar with disjointed data environments that often inhibit effective communication among different elements of the ecosystem. This fragmentation leads in turn to issues such as inconsistencies in services versus payments, wastage, and notably, care delivered being less than best-practice. Despite the long-standing recognition of interoperable data as a potential solution, efforts in achieving interoperability have been disjointed and inconsistent, resulting in numerous incompatible standards, despite the widespread agreement that fewer standards would enhance interoperability.

Using global surface electromyography (sEMG) and the sEMG threshold it has been suggested that children activate their type-II motor unit (MU) to a lesser extent compared with adults. However, when age-related differences in discrete MU activation are examined using sEMG decomposition this phenomenon is not observed. Furthermore, findings from these studies are inconsistent and conflicting.

The number of motor units included in calculations of mean firing rates varies widely in the literature. It is unknown how the number of decomposed motor units included in the calculation of firing rate per participant compares to the total number of active motor units in the muscle, and if this is different for males and females. Bootstrapped distributions and confidence intervals (CI) of mean motor unit firing rates decomposed from the tibialis anterior were used to represent the total number of active motor units for individual participants in trials from 20 to 100 % of maximal voluntary contraction.

Neuron-to-neuron transmission of aggregation-prone, misfolded proteins may potentially explain the spatiotemporal accumulation of pathological lesions in the brains of patients with neurodegenerative protein-misfolding diseases (PMDs). However, little is known about protein transmission from the central nervous system to the periphery, or how this propagation contributes to PMD pathology. To deepen our understanding of these processes, we established two functional neuromuscular systems derived from human iPSCs.
