Introduction: Segmental bone defects (SBDs) are devastating injuries sustained by warfighters and are difficult to heal. Preclinical models that accurately simulate human conditions are necessary to investigate therapies to treat SBDs. Introduction: The detailed mechanical and histologic properties of stainless steel miniscrew implants used for temporary orthodontic anchorage have not been assessed. Thus, the purpose of this study was to compare them with identically sized titanium alloy miniscrew implants.

Dendrimers have shown great potential in drug delivery because of their enhancement of drug solubility in aqueous media, leading to an increase in in vivo circulation and efficacy to targets. The structure of drug-dendrimer complexes however, is not well-known owing to the difficulties associated with visualizing individual drug molecules attached to dendrimers. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) enables visualization of dendrimer intramolecular structures using our approach of metal ion tagging.

Dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) have drawn much interest for the regeneration of mineralized tissues, and several studies have compared DPSCs to bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMMSCs). However, conflicting results, possibly due to donor-associated variability, have been published and the regenerative potential of DPSCs is currently unclear. In the present study we have sought to address this problem using a donor-matched experimental design to robustly compare the biological properties of DPSCs and BMMSCs.

Background: The Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) Research Group recently reported significant reduction in the progression of certain categories of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) with the use of high-dose antioxidant and zinc supplementation. We studied the current use of dietary supplementation in our patients with AMD to determine whether dosages recommended in the AREDS were being achieved. We also evaluated the easiest and most cost-effective method to reach recommended dosages using supplements currently available in Canada.
