Article Synopsis
  • - Plastid genes in most plants are maternally inherited, which usually keeps transgenes from spreading via pollen; however, there's a small chance that plastids can be passed through pollen, as shown in Arabidopsis thaliana where a mutation gave pollen a 1.9 × 10(-5) chance of transferring traits.
  • - The study also examined Brassica napus, a widely cultivated crop, where researchers created a stable plastid transformant (T36) that integrated specific resistance genes into its plastid DNA, confirmed through Southern blot analysis.
  • - The results demonstrated a similarly low rate of pollen transmission in Brassicaceae, highlighting the potential for using plastid transformation in B. napus to enhance plant

Assembly of photosystem II (PSII) occurs sequentially and requires several auxiliary proteins, such as ALB3 (ALBINO3). Here, we describe the role of the Arabidopsis thaliana thylakoid membrane protein Tellurite resistance C (AtTerC) in this process. Knockout of AtTerC was previously shown to be seedling-lethal.
