Aim Of The Work: To compare the efficacy and safety of combined fractional CO laser with dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) 50% versus fractional CO laser alone in the treatment of macular amyloidosis.

Patients And Methods: Twenty patients with macular amyloidosis were treated with monthly session of fractional CO laser only in one side of the lesion (area A), and fractional laser followed by application of DMSO 50% solution in the other side of the lesion (area B).

Background And Aims: The future development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients after sustained virologic response (SVR) is an important issue. The purposes of this study were to investigate pathological alterations in organelle of the liver of SVR patients and to characterize organelle abnormalities that may be related to carcinogenesis after SVR.

Methods: The ultrastructure of liver biopsy specimens from patients with chronic hepatitis C (CHC) and SVR were compared to cell and mouse models and assessed semi-quantitatively using transmission electron microscopy.

In this study, we investigate the association of single-nucleotide polymorphisms of nephrin gene and glucocorticoid receptor gene (NR3C1) and susceptibility to develop NS and the response to steroid therapy in 100 Egyptian children with NS using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism. We also analyzed the correlation between the genotypes and clinicopathologic features of the patients.

Angiopoietin-2, endothelial dysfunction and renal involvement in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus.

Background: Angiopoietin-2 (ang-2) that activates endothelial cells and increases vascular inflammation might have significant roles in the pathogenesis of glomerular diseases. This study aimed at assessing the level of ang-2 as a marker of renal involvement in SLE patients to elucidate its correlation with disease activity and endothelial dysfunction.

Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is characterized by the presence of a BCR-ABL fusion gene, which is the result of a reciprocal translocation between chromosomes 9 and 22, and is cytogenetically visible as a shortened chromosome 22 (Philadelphia). Research during the past two decades has established that BCR-ABL is probably the pathogenetic pathway leading to CML, and that constitutive tyrosine kinase activity is central to BCR-ABL capacity to transform hematopoietic cells in vitro and in vivo. The tyrosine kinase inhibitor imatinib mesylate was introduced into the treatment regimen for CML in 1998.

Molecular cytogenetic characteristics of Down syndrome newborns.

Down syndrome (DS) is a multifactorial disorder with a high predisposition to leukemia and other malignancies. A change in the replication pattern from synchronous in normal genes to asynchronous in DS amniocytes has previously been reported. The objective of this study was to evaluate additional molecular cytogenetic factors which could re-emphasize the high correlation between DS cells and genetic instability.

Random aneuploidy and telomere capture in chronic lymphocytic leukemia and chronic myeloid leukemia patients.

Telomeric regions of the human genome are of particular interest, because rearrangements of these regions are difficult to identify by conventional chromosome banding technology. With the advent of molecular cytogenetic techniques such as fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), it has been possible to investigate the terminus in cytogenetically visible terminal deletions and telomere rearrangements. We investigated telomere capture and aneuploidy rates in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) patients, as well as in healthy control subsets.

[Health related self-help groups--participation and information level in Germany. Results of the German telephone health survey 2003].

Using the data provided by the German Telephone Health Survey 2003 that gathered health related information from 8,318 adult residents, statements concerning the participation in health related self-help groups and the level of information about self-help groups were analysed. According to the survey 8.9 % of sample have already participated in a health related self-help group, 13 % stated to be informed about this topic but have not taken part in such a group.

Random aneuploidy in neoplastic and pre-neoplastic diseases, multiple myeloma, and monoclonal gammopathy.

In this study we evaluated the aneuploidy rate of cells from patients considered to have a premalignant condition (monoclonal gammopathy or MGUS) and patients with multiple myeloma, as well as healthy controls. By applying a fluorescence situ hybridization technique, we estimated the random aneuploidy rate of alpha-satellite (centromeres) probes from chromosomes 9 and 18. The monosomy and total aneuploidy rates were higher in the two study groups compared to the control group.

Comparing the genetic changes detected in the primary and secondary tumor sites of ovarian cancer using comparative genomic hybridization.

Our objective was to compare the genetic abnormalities in the primary tumors of epithelial ovarian cancer and their associated secondary peritoneal implants using comparative genomic hybridization (CGH). CGH was performed on seven apparent stage III ovarian serous cancer cases. Dissected tissue samples from the primary tumor and from the metastatic peritoneal implant were obtained at initial surgical staging and analyzed in each case.

Application of comparative genomic hybridization technique for detection of chromosomal aberrations in benign cystic teratoma.

The effect of chlorambucil treatment on cytogenetic parameters in chronic lymphocytic leukemia patients.

The most common treatment of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is the alkylating agent chlorambucil (CLB), with or without prednisone. In the present study, our aim was to evaluate whether treatment with CLB for more than one year induced genetic changes manifested by comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) as new chromosomal aberrations. We also studied whether CLB affected the pattern of replication by using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH).

Application of comparative genomic hybridization in search for genetic aberrations in fibroadenomas of the breast.

We applied a comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) technique to paraffin-embedded tissue samples taken from fibroadenomas, benign breast tumors, to detect possible numerical and unbalanced genetic changes. We compared the results to those from previous cytogenetic studies of fibroadenomas. In concurrence with previous cytogenetic studies of fibroadenomas, we detected genetic aberrations in chromosomes 4-6, 8-13, 16, 18, 19, 20, and 22.

Asynchronous replication of biallelically expressed loci: a new phenomenon in Turner syndrome.

Purpose: Transcriptional activity of genes is related to their replication timing; alleles showing the common biallelic mode of expression replicate synchronously, whereas those with a monoallelic mode of expression replicate asynchronously. Here the level of synchronization in replication timing of alleles was determined in subjects with Turner syndrome.

Methods: Fluorescence in situ hybridization was used for three loci not linked to X chromosome, in lymphocytes derived from 12 controls, 3 individuals with Turner, and 4 with mosaic Turner syndrome.

SKY detection of chromosome rearrangements in two cases of tMDS with a complex karyotype.

In this study, we used spectral karyotyping (SKY) and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) as complementary techniques for the analysis of two therapy-related secondary myelodysplastic syndrome (t-MDS) cases with complex karyotypes, previously analyzed by G-banding. Different types of SKY's cytogenetic contributions include confirmation of G-banding results, identification of partially characterized rearrangements, identification of marker chromosomes unidentified by G-banding, and detection of cryptic reciprocal translocations. In particular, the ability of SKY to clarify a number of markers led to the comprehension of clonal evolution.
