Displacement of a tooth or a portion of it is an unusual but very serious event for the severe consequences it could have. Already Hill and Howe in the half of the past century understood and described the risks associated to this accident particularly frequent during impacted third lower molars avulsion. Displacements can be idiopathic or iatrogenic and the sites of displacements depend on the anatomy of the tooth and the surrounding region.

A microbiological assay and a liquid chromatographic method were validated for quantitation of moxifloxacin in tablets. The microbiological method consisted of a cylinder-plate agar diffusion assay using Micrococcus luteus ATCC 9341 as the test microorganism and phosphate buffer (0.1M, pH 8.

In this panel discussion, three health leaders provide information on techniques and approaches used to effectively implement the CDC's Racial and Ethnic Adult Disparities Immunization Initiative (READII) Programs. Part 1 offers an overview of READII and information on early results and program accomplishments. In Part 2, the Mississippi READII initiative is explored, with insights on how this program has served 10,000 African Americans in inner-city Jackson, Mississippi as well 23,000 elderly African Americans in 18 rural Delta counties, said to be the poorest counties in the nation.

Aim: A successful implant therapy depends on sufficient quantity of available bone. Latero-posterior maxillary area often represents a hardly useful zone for routine implant therapy in long time edentulous patients. Standard procedures of maxillary sinus lifting are the goals of implant-prosthetic rehabilitation.

A case of primary and exclusive gingival localization of a non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) personally observed at the Surgical Out-patients Unit of the Department of Dentistry at the Umberto I Hospital in Rome, is described. A 71 year-old caucasian male was referred by his private dentist because of a severe pain at the soft tissue of the mandible even after dental, neurologic and parodontal treatments. At clinical examination, a severe gingival swelling in the symphysis region with hard bleeding, palpable lymph nodes and no important evidence in radiographic and CT examinations were found.

We report here on the current state of our efforts in automated molecular microscopy. Our primary automated data acquisition software system, Leginon, has been completely redesigned over the past two years. The new distributed system has been developed using the Python programming language and is compatible with both Linux and Windows operating systems.

Histone acetyltransferase and histone deacetylase (HDAC) determine the acetylation status of histones, and thereby control the regulation of gene expression. HDAC inhibitors have been found to inhibit the growth of a variety of tumor cells in vitro and in vivo. We demonstrated previously that the short-chain fatty acid compound butyrate and its derivative tributyrin (both HDAC inhibitors) arrest cell growth and induce differentiation in human neuroblastoma (NB) cells.

The occurrence of symptoms in pollen allergy patients in urban areas may be affected by local environmental factors such as sources of pollution, natural and ornamental vegetation, local architecture impeding dispersion, etc. The aim of this study was to analyse the frequency of sensitization in pollen allergy patients and the relationship with antihistamine sales. For this study, a large number of clinical records, together with pharmaceutical and pollen data, were collected between 1999 and 2001 in the city of Córdoba, in the south of the Iberian Peninsula.

Article Synopsis
  • Four new C-19 compounds, called transtaganolides A-D, have been extracted from the plant Thapsia transtagana.
  • Their chemical structures were confirmed using physical techniques, particularly X-ray analysis for compounds A and B.
  • This discovery marks the first instance of a 7-methoxy-4,5-dihydro-3H-oxepin-2-one ring being identified in a natural product.

Paralytic poliomyelitis was once endemic in the United States; however, because of high vaccination levels, the last case of wild disease occurred in 1979. Although worldwide polio eradication may be achieved in the near future, the presence of undervaccinated children in urban areas and among groups who refuse vaccination creates an outbreak risk, should importation of wild virus occur. In 1999, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommended that inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) be used for routine immunization of the US population and that oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) be reserved for "mass vaccination campaigns to control outbreaks of paralytic polio.

The delivery of health care services to urban populations in the United States is a system of rapidly increasing complexity. With the emergence of superspecialized physicians, a scientific approach to disease management has received great emphasis. Those providing health care at the population level may also apply this evidence-based approach.

Plane-trees are widely grown in Spain as ornaments. This taxon releases large amounts of pollen into the air and this pollen type seems to have proved implications on pollinosis. The aim of this study was to analyse airborne Platanus pollen content in the air of C6rdoba (South-western Spain) over the last 10 years, and its distribution in different areas of the city, as well as to consider possible implications regarding pollen allergies.

We performed a prospective, multicenter study to assess the tolerance and possible short-term effects of allergen vaccines administered according to a cluster schedule in the months immediately preceding the onset of the pollen season. The study was carried out in eight centers and included 191 patients (children and adults) with allergic respiratory disease due to sensitization to olive tree and/or grass pollen. Of these, 34 patients acted as controls and the remaining patients received immunotherapy administered in the initiation phase according to a cluster schedule of eight doses injected on four visits.

Background: Sexually transmitted disease (STD), including AIDS, disproportionately affects African-American and Hispanic women.

Goal: To evaluate efficacy of standard and enhanced (addition of optional support groups) gender- and culture-specific, small-group behavioral interventions, compared to interactive STD counseling, in high risk minority women for two years.

Methods: Women with a non-viral STD were treated and enrolled in a randomized trial.

Between late 2000 and the spring of 2003, the United States experienced shortages of vaccines against 8 of 11 preventable diseases in children. In response, the Department of Health and Human Services requested that the National Vaccine Advisory Committee (NVAC) make recommendations on strengthening the supply of routinely recommended vaccines. The NVAC appointed a Working Group to identify potential causes of vaccine supply shortages, develop strategies to alleviate or prevent shortages, and enlist stakeholders to consider the applicability and feasibility of these strategies.

Although the methodology of molecular microscopy has enormous potential, it is time consuming and labor intensive. The techniques required to produce a three-dimensional (3D) electron density map of a macromolecular structure normally require manual operation of an electron microscope by a skilled operator and manual supervision of the sometimes complex software needed for analysis and calculation of 3D maps. Systems to automate the process of data acquisition from an electron microscope are being developing and these systems are being integrated with specimen handling operations and post acquisition data processing.

Clinical manifestations after the inhalation of Olea europaea pollen are very frequent in Spain. Forty-five patients with a clinical history of asthma and sensitivity to O. europaea pollen were included in a randomized trial to evaluate the safety and the clinical efficacy of immunotherapy with a new chemically modified extract (depigmented and glutaraldehyde-polymerized) of Olea europaea.

The United States is a country of immigrants, our government having been formed by recent arrivals. This trend has continued throughout our history; according to the Center for Immigration Studies, more than 26 million immigrants have settled in the United States since 1970, and approximately one million new immigrants come to the United States each year. The immigrant population faces highly diverse health issues that states, cities, and counties must address, many of which pose significant legal and policy issues.
