Sub-Saharan Africa has been the last continent to experience a significant number of cases in the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). Studies suggest that air pollution is related to COVID-19 mortality; poor air quality has been linked to cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, and respiratory diseases, which are considered co-morbidities linked to COVID-19 deaths. We examine potential connections between country-wide COVID-19 cases and environmental conditions in Senegal, Cabo Verde, Nigeria, Cote D'Ivorie, and Angola.

The Harmattan, a dry, northeasterly trade wind, transports large quantities of Saharan dust over the Sahelian region during the dry season (December-March). Studies have shown that bacterial meningitis outbreaks in Sahelian regions show hyper-endemic to endemic levels during high-dust months. We examine the (a) seasonality and intraseasonal variability of dust, climate, and meningitis and the (b) quantitative relationships between various dust proxies with meningitis lags of 0-10 weeks in Senegal from 2012 to 2017.

We identify bacteria types on collected dust samples in Dakar Senegal, a region that experiences frequent Saharan dust events. We use classical techniques to identify bacteria types from dust samples. Seventy-seven bacteria types are identified from samples collected by spatula and the QuickTake® 30 air sampling pump.

In this work, we use existing particulate matter (PM) data from Dakar, Senegal, satellite aerosol optical depth (AOD) and the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model to evaluate the role of dust transport from the Sahara and PM concentrations and exposure into other administrative districts of Senegal during 2015 and 2016. We also use data from the Ministry of Health to examine spatial and temporal patterns of acute respiratory infections, asthma, bronchitis, and tuberculosis across Senegal with an emphasis on Northern Hemisphere winter December-February, when air quality is poor, and June-August when there is an improvement in air quality. Measurements in Dakar, Senegal, suggest hazardous PM concentrations associated with Saharan dust storms but lower PM concentrations during the summer.

Chiral pumping from optical electric fields oscillating at terahertz frequencies is observed in the Weyl material TaAs with electric and magnetic fields aligned along both the and axes. Free-carrier spectral weight enhancement is measured directly, confirming theoretical expectations of chiral pumping. A departure from linear field dependence of the Drude weight is observed at the highest fields in the quantum limit, providing evidence of field-dependent Fermi velocity of the chiral Landau level.

We use the Weather Research and Forecast model using the Goddard Global Ozone Chemistry Aerosol Radiation and Transport (GOCART) dust module (WRF-CHEM) to simulate the particulate matter (PM) variations in the Sahel during the winter seasons (January-March) of 1960-2014. Two simulations are undertaken where the direct aerosol feedback is turned off, and only transport is considered and where the direct aerosol feedback is turned on. We find that simulated Sahelian PM and PM concentrations were lower in the 1960s and after 2003 and higher during the period between 1988 and 2002.

We report on temperature dependence of the infrared reflectivity spectra of a single crystalline herbertsmithite in two polarizations-parallel and perpendicular to the kagome plane of Cu atoms. We observe anomalous broadening of the low frequency phonons possibly caused by fluctuations in the exotic dynamical magnetic order of the spin liquid.

Graphene is an attractive material for use in optical detectors because it absorbs light from mid-infrared to ultraviolet wavelengths with nearly equal strength. Graphene is particularly well suited for bolometers-devices that detect temperature-induced changes in electrical conductivity caused by the absorption of light-because its small electron heat capacity and weak electron-phonon coupling lead to large light-induced changes in electron temperature. Here, we demonstrate a hot-electron bolometer made of bilayer graphene that is dual-gated to create a tunable bandgap and electron-temperature-dependent conductivity.

A far-infrared system measures the full complex Faraday angle, the rotation as well as the ellipticity, with an unprecedented accuracy of 10 microrad/T. The system operates on several far-infrared laser lines in the spectral range from 0.3 to 6 THz and produces results as a continuous function of temperature from 10 to 310 K and applied fields between +/-8 T.

This study investigated the requirement for ubiquitylation of PCNA at lysine 164 during polymerase eta-dependent translesion synthesis (TLS) of site-specific cis-syn cyclobutane thymine dimers (T (wedge)T). The in vitro assay recapitulated origin-dependent initiation, fork assembly, and semiconservative, bidirectional replication of double-stranded circular DNA substrates. A phosphocellulose column was used to fractionate HeLa cell extracts into two fractions; flow-through column fraction I (CFI) contained endogenous PCNA, RPA, ubiquitin-activating enzyme E1, and ubiquitin conjugase Rad6, and eluted column fraction II (CFII) included pol delta, pol eta, and RFC.

G4-DNA is a highly stable alternative DNA structure that can form spontaneously in guanine-rich regions of single-stranded DNA under physiological conditions. The effects of N(2)-ethylGua, O(6)-ethylGua, and O(6)-methylGua adducts in template DNA on polymerization by mammalian DNA polymerases alpha and eta have been investigated. The N(2)-ethylGua adduct blocks polymerization by the replicative DNA polymerase alpha to a much greater extent than does the O(6)-ethyl- or the O(6)-methylGua adducts. The DNA polymerase eta efficiently and accurately bypasses the N(2)-ethylGua lesion but like DNA polymerase alpha is similarly blocked by the O(6)-ethyl- or the O(6)-methylGua adducts.
