Nature of permeability changes in membrane of HeLa cells adsorbing Sendai virus.

Adsorption of Sendai virus to HeLa cells induced in them an increased permeability to K+, Na+, Ca++, deoxyglucose, but not to fluorescein. The stimulation of uptake of 42K was temperature-dependent, did not occur below 15 degrees C, and was not inhibited by ouabain. The virus-induced increase in the uptake and release of 42K and of 3H deoxyglucose could not be mimicked by treatment of cells with linoleic acid, a procedure which increased the fluidity of the cellular membranes.

Contact lens versus intraocular lens in the correction of aphakia.

The insertion of an intraocular lens at the time of cataract surgery has become a very popular method of correcting aphakia. However, it is not done without adding extra risks to the operation and postoperative course. The use of a contact lens, though not quite as effective from a visual standpoint, involves fewer risks.

Mediumistic and psychopathological pictorial expression. An introductory comparative study.

The main objectives of this paper are: (i) To present a classification, based on the common features of structure, content and context, between mediumistic pictorial expression and psychopathological pictorial expression. (ii) This should show that both types of expression are very similar in many aspects, which have been described as the main patterns of psychopathological pictorial expression. (iii) Difficulties in dealing with the topics under examination are discussed.

Complications associated with spin-cast soft contact lenses.

The only spin-cast soft contact lens manufactured in the United States is the Bausch & Lomb Soflens. There have been no significant complications reported with this high-quality lens. Essentially, the complications seen with the spin-cast lens have been the same as those seen with any of the lathe-cut hydrophilic lenses.

Carbon-14 tracer studies in the metabolism of isolated rat-liver parenchymal cells under conditions of gluconeogenesis from lactate and pyruvate.

In rat liver perfusion experiments under conditions of gluconeogenesis from lactate and pyruvate 14C-labeling patterns of metabolites with (1-14C)-labeled and (2-14C)-labeled lactate or pyruvate, [14C]bicarbonate and [1-14C]octanoate as tracers, have been obtained, which do not agree with generally assumed reaction schemes. The experiments have been repeated with incubations of isolated rat-liver parenchymal cells. The results demonstrate that the discrepancies between expected and analysed 14C-labeling patterns of metabolites were still existent.

The intracellular events in the metabolic pathway of gluconeogenesis from lactate and pyruvate in liver tissue were assumed to be understood. Nevertheless the results of several 14C-tracer experiments gave rise to the postulation of still unknown intracellular interactions under this condition. We have tried to contribute to the solution of this problem by using different 14C labeled tracers such as [1-14C]lactate or pyruvate and [2-14C]lactate or pyruvate, [14C]bicarbonate and [1-14C]octanoate in perfusion experiments with livers from rats under conditions of gluconeogenesis from lactate and pyruvate.
