Background And Purpose: Through 2-way live video and audio communication, telestroke enhances urgent treatment of patients with acute stroke in emergency departments (EDs) without immediate access to on-site specialists. To assess for opportunities to shorten the door to thrombolysis time, we measured multiple time intervals in a telestroke system.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 115 records of consecutive acute stroke patients treated with intravenous thrombolysis during a 20-month period via a statewide telestroke system in 17 EDs in Georgia.

Pseudothrombocytopenia remains a challenge in the haematological laboratory. The pre-analytical problem that platelets tend to easily aggregate in vitro, giving rise to lower platelet counts, has been known since ethylenediamine-tetra acetic acid EDTA and automated platelet counting procedures were introduced in the haematological laboratory. Different approaches to avoid the time and temperature dependent in vitro aggregation of platelets in the presence of EDTA were tested, but none of them proved optimal for routine purposes.

Objective: This study's objective was to develop a measure of social health using item response theory as part of the Patient Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS).

Methods: After candidate items were generated from review of prior literature, focus groups, expert input, and cognitive interviews, items were administered to youth aged 8-17 as part of the PROMIS pediatric large scale testing. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were used to assess dimensionality and to identify instances of local dependence.

Objective: The objective of the present study is to describe the extension of the National Institutes of Health Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS(®)) pediatric parent proxy-report item banks for parents of children ages 5-7 years, and to investigate differential item functioning (DIF) between the data obtained from parents of 5-7-year-old children with the data obtained from parents of 8-17 year-old children in the original construction of the scales.

Methods: Item response theory (IRT) analyses of DIF were conducted comparing data from the 5-7 age group with data from the established scales for ages 8-17 across 5 generic health domains (physical functioning, pain, fatigue, emotional health, and social health) and asthma.

Results: IRT DIF analyses revealed that the majority of the items functioned similarly with responses from parents of younger and older children.

Background And Objectives: Nephrotic syndrome (NS) represents a common disease in pediatric nephrology typified by a relapsing and remitting course and characterized by the presence of edema that can significantly affect the health-related quality of life in children and adolescents. The PROMIS pediatric measures were constructed to be publically available, efficient, precise, and valid across a variety of diseases to assess patient reports of symptoms and quality of life. This study was designed to evaluate the ability of children and adolescents with NS to complete the PROMIS assessment via computer and to initiate validity assessments of the short forms and full item banks in pediatric NS.

Three new aromatic acids, named lahorenoic acids A (1), B (2), and C (3), have been isolated along with the known compounds phenazine-1-carboxylic acid (4), 2-hydroxyphenazine-1-carboxylic acid (5), 2-hydroxyphenazine (6), 2,8-dihydroxyphenazine (7), cyclo-Pro-Tyr (8), cyclo-Pro-Val (9), cyclo-Pro-Met (10), and WLIP (11) and characterized from the biocontrol strain Pseudomonas aurantiaca PB-St2. The structures of these compounds were deduced by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic and mass spectral data interpretation. Compounds 2, 4, and 7 showed moderate antibacterial activity against mycobacteria and other Gram-positive bacteria, while 4 was also found to exhibit cytotoxic and antifungal properties.

The marine-derived filamentous fungus Asteromyces cruciatus 763, obtained off the coast of La Jolla, San Diego, USA, yielded the new pentapeptide lajollamide A (1), along with the known compounds regiolone (2), hyalodendrin (3), gliovictin (4), ¹N-norgliovicitin (5), and bis-N-norgliovictin (6). The planar structure of lajollamide A (1) was determined by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy in combination with mass spectrometry. The absolute configuration of lajollamide A (1) was unambiguously solved by total synthesis which provided three additional diastereomers of 1 and also revealed that an unexpected acid-mediated partial racemization (2:1) of the L-leucine and L-N-Me-leucine residues occurred during the chemical degradation process.

The accurate determination of critical dimensions and roughness is necessary to ensure the quality of photoresist masks that are crucial for the operational reliability of electronic components. Scatterometry provides a fast indirect optical nondestructive method for the determination of profile parameters that are obtained from scattered light intensities using inverse methods. We illustrate the effect of line roughness on the reconstruction of grating parameters employing a maximum likelihood scheme.

Objective: This study examined comorbidity prevalence and general medication use among individuals with atrial fibrillation in the United States to convey a more comprehensive picture of their total disease burden.

Methods: This was a retrospective, observational evaluation of responses to the 2009 wave of the annual Internet-based National Health and Wellness survey, which collects health data including epidemiologic data and information on medical treatment from a representative nationwide sample of adults in the United States. Responses were assessed to determine three measures of comorbidity: mean number of comorbidities, CHADS2 score reflecting stroke risk (0-6 points; low risk: 0; moderate risk: 1; high risk: ≥ 2), and scores on the Charlson Comorbidity Index, which is a measure of general comorbidity reflecting presence of a wide range of comorbidities.

We investigate the impact of line-edge and line-width roughness (LER, LWR) on the measured diffraction intensities in angular resolved extreme ultraviolet (EUV) scatterometry for a periodic line-space structure designed for EUV lithography. LER and LWR with typical amplitudes of a few nanometers were previously neglected in the course of the profile reconstruction. The two-dimensional (2D) rigorous numerical simulations of the diffraction process for periodic structures are carried out with the finite element method providing a numerical solution of the 2D Helmholtz equation.

Two genes encoding recombinant cytosolic oxidoreductases from Gluconobacter oxydans, gox0313 and gox0646, were heterologously expressed in Escherichia coli and the resulting proteins were purified and characterized. GOX0313 was identified as a medium-chain alcohol dehydrogenase, whereas GOX0646 was classified as a ketocarbonyl reductase. GOX0313 had a broad substrate spectrum and oxidized various primary alcohols.

Purpose: Cardiac dysfunction (CD) is a recognized risk associated with the addition of trastuzumab to adjuvant chemotherapy for human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-positive breast cancer, especially when the treatment regimen includes anthracyclines. Given the demonstrated efficacy of trastuzumab, ongoing assessment of cardiac safety and identification of risk factors for CD are important for optimal patient care.

Background: Increasing evidence shows chemotherapy in combination with vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) inhibition is a clinically active therapy for patients with metastatic melanoma (MM).

Methods: A phase 2 trial was conducted in chemotherapy-naive patients with unresectable stage IV MM who were randomized to temozolomide (200 mg/m(2) on days 1 through 5) and bevacizumab (10 mg/kg intravenously on days 1 and 15) every 28 days (Regimen TB) or nab-paclitaxel (100 mg/m(2) , or 80 mg/m(2) post-addendum 5 secondary to toxicity, on days 1, 8, and 15), bevacizumab (10 mg/kg on days 1 and 15), and carboplatin (area under the curve [AUC] 6 on day 1, or AUC 5 post-addendum 5) every 28 days (Regimen ABC). The Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) -encoded EBNA2 protein, which is essential for the in vitro transformation of B-lymphocytes, interferes with cellular processes by binding to proteins via conserved sequence motifs. Its Arginine-Glycine (RG) repeat element contains either symmetrically or asymmetrically di-methylated arginine residues (SDMA and ADMA, respectively). Integrating the governing chemistry with the genomics and phenotypes of microbial colonies has been a "holy grail" in microbiology. This work describes a highly sensitive, broadly applicable, and cost-effective approach that allows metabolic profiling of live microbial colonies directly from a Petri dish without any sample preparation. Nanospray desorption electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (MS), combined with alignment of MS data and molecular networking, enabled monitoring of metabolite production from live microbial colonies from diverse bacterial genera, including Bacillus subtilis, Streptomyces coelicolor, Mycobacterium smegmatis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
