Background: Fetal tachyarrhythmia may result in low cardiac output and death. Consequently, antiarrhythmic treatment is offered in most affected pregnancies. We compared 3 drugs commonly used to control supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) and atrial flutter (AF).

Differential effect of drug interference in immunogenicity assays.

The law of August 22nd, 2002 concerning patients' rights (LPR) gave a new dimension to the relationship between the physician and the patient. According to this law, it is up to the physician to judge if a patient is able to exercise his own rights or if the patient needs assistance from a representative. In the particular case of the patient being a minor, this often leads to a difficult situation because of the absence of validated criteria to evaluate the capacity of judgment of a minor patient.

Carotid atherosclerosis in depression and anxiety: associations for age of depression onset.

Objective: Mental health and cardiovascular disease have been associated, whereas the temporal course and underlying mechanisms are still incompletely understood. Our aims were to examine the presence of subclinical atherosclerosis in subjects with depressive or anxiety disorder, also taking into account disorder characteristics (subtype, severity, duration, age of onset, medication).

Methods: The sample included 470 depression or anxiety cases and 179 controls, aged 20-66 years, participating in the Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety (NESDA).

Anesthesia and postoperative delirium in older adults undergoing hip surgery.

Objectives: To examine the effects of general anesthesia on the risk of incident postoperative delirium in older adults undergoing hip surgery.

Design: Secondary analysis of haloperidol prophylaxis for delirium clinical trial data. Predefined risk factors for delirium were assessed prior to surgery.

Minor neurological dysfunction in children with autism spectrum disorder.

Aim: The aim of this study was to improve the understanding of brain function in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in relation to minor neurological dysfunctions (MNDs).

Method: We studied MNDs in 122 children (93 males, 29 females; mean age 8 y 1 mo, SD 2 y 6 mo) who, among a total cohort of 705 children (513 males, 192 females; mean age 9 y, SD 2 y 0.5 mo) referred to a regional outpatient non-academic psychiatric centre in the Netherlands, were diagnosed with ASD after an extensive multidisciplinary psychiatric assessment.

Changes of ferritin and CRP levels in melanoma patients treated with adjuvant interferon-α (EORTC 18952) and prognostic value on treatment outcome.

Adjuvant therapy with interferon-α (IFN) only benefits a small subgroup of melanoma patients and a predictive marker selecting responders does not exist. IFN induces increased ferritin and decreased C-reactive protein (CRP) levels; however, an association with treatment effect was not studied. Serum was collected from patients participating in the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer 18 952 trial comparing adjuvant treatment with IFN to observation.

Investigating air pollution and atherosclerosis in humans: concepts and outlook.

Although ambient particulate matter contributes to atherosclerosis in animal models, its role in atherogenesis in humans needs to be established. This article discusses concepts, study design, and choice of health outcomes to efficiently investigate the atherogenic role of ambient air pollution, with an emphasis on early preclinical biomarkers of atherosclerosis that are unaffected by short-term exposure to air pollution (eg, carotid intima-media thickness [CIMT] and functional performance of the vessel). Air pollution studies using these end points are summarized.

Depression, anxiety, and arterial stiffness.

Background: Arterial stiffness gains attention as a potential mechanism underlying the frequently found association between depression or anxiety and cardiovascular disease. However, observations regarding stiffness and psychopathology were often based on small samples. The current study aimed to examine whether subjects with a diagnosis of depressive or anxiety disorder showed increased stiffness and to explore associations between various psychiatric characteristics and arterial stiffness.

Carotid atherosclerosis and lipoprotein particle subclasses in familial hypercholesterolaemia and familial combined hyperlipidaemia.

Background And Aims: Familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) and familial combined hyperlipidaemia (FCH) are common atherogenic disorders with great variability in cardiovascular disease (CVD). No direct atherosclerosis burden comparisons have been performed between FH and FCH in relation to lipoprotein particle distribution.

Methods And Results: Risk factors and three measures of carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) in both sides were determined in 572 FH, 250 FCH and 200 controls.

Surprising negative association between IgG1 allotype disparity and anti-adalimumab formation: a cohort study.

Introduction: The human monoclonal antibody adalimumab is known to induce an anti-globulin response in some adalimumab-treated patients. Antibodies against adalimumab (AAA) are associated with non-response to treatment. Immunoglobulins, such as adalimumab, carry allotypes which represent slight differences in the amino acid sequences of the constant chains of an IgG molecule.

Breathing abnormalities in children with breathlessness.

Dysfunctional breathing, hyperventilation and vocal cord dysfunction are frequently seen in children and adults. The prevalence is unknown. There are no standardized diagnostic criteria, and for now, effective exclusion of organic disease leaves the diagnosis of dysfunctional breathing.

Rationale and design of dal-VESSEL: a study to assess the safety and efficacy of dalcetrapib on endothelial function using brachial artery flow-mediated vasodilatation.

Objective: Dalcetrapib increases high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels through effects on cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP). As part of the dalcetrapib dal-HEART clinical trial programme, the efficacy and safety of dalcetrapib is assessed in coronary heart disease (CHD) patients in the dal-VESSEL study (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT00655538), the design and methods of which are presented here.

A new gradient-based algorithm for edge detection in ultrasonic carotid artery images.

In human clinical studies, digital B-Mode ultrasound images of carotid and femoral artery walls are used to measure Intima-Media Thickness (IMT). IMT represents the arterial intima-media complex and is a validated surrogate parameter for atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease risk. Conventionally, IMT is obtained by tracing the ultrasound interfaces of the arterial far walls manually.

Comorbidities of asthma during childhood: possibly important, yet poorly studied.

Asthma in adults is associated with comorbidities such as obesity, gastro-oesophageal reflux, dysfunctional breathing and mental disorders. Herein, we provide an overview of the current state of evidence on these comorbidities in childhood asthma. The prevalence, known mechanisms and possible treatment options for each comorbid condition will be discussed.

Long-term LDL-c lowering in heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia normalizes carotid intima-media thickness.

Objective: We investigated the effectiveness of statins in daily practice in reducing the arterial wall thicknesses by comparing the carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) between statin-treated familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) patients and their unaffected spouses.

Methods: FH subjects treated with LDL-c lowering medication for at least 5 years and their unaffected spouses were included in this observational study. Clinical data and carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) as surrogate marker for atherosclerosis were acquired.
