Partial Hepatectomy of a VA-ECMO Patient After Mechanical CPR by LUCAS Device Due to a Catastrophic Liver Laceration: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Many patients experiencing acute coronary syndrome (ACS) present in cardiac arrest. Mechanical chest compressions are a common tool in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and have their benefits as well as disadvantages and reported complications. In recent years, veno-arterial extracorporeal oxygenation membrane (VA-ECMO) has proven to be a promising tool in these circumstances and is now considered part of the treatment algorithm in emergent and refractory cases.

Crosschecking teachers' perspectives on learning in a one-to-one environment with their actual classroom behavior - a longitudinal study.

One-to-one laptop initiatives have become prevalent in schools aiming to enhance active learning and assist students in developing twenty-first-century skills. This paper reports on a qualitative investigation of teachers in a junior high school in Northern Israel, who were gradually implementing one-to-one computing. The research reported in this paper is based on longitudinal data collected over a five-year period and included all of the teachers who participated in the project.

GLASS: Global Lorlatinib for ALK(+) and ROS1(+) retrospective Study: real world data of 123 NSCLC patients.

Unlabelled: Lorlatinib is a third-generation tyrosine-kinases inhibitor (TKI) targeting ALK/ROS1 fusions. The FDA has approved lorlatinib for TKI-pretreated ALK(+) NSCLC, while its approval for ROS1(+) is still pending. Here we present the largest real-world data of NSCLC patients harboring ALK/ROS1 rearrangements treated with lorlatinib.

Clinical activity of brigatinib in ROS1-rearranged non-small cell lung cancer.

Background: Brigatinib is a potent ROS1 inhibitor. The existing data on its clinical activity in ROS1-rearranged non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) are limited to four cases.

Methods: Six patients with ROS1-rearranged advanced NSCLC treated with brigatinib were identified through search of the internal databases of four participating cancer centers.

Introduction: Next-generation sequencing (NGS) of cell-free circulating tumor DNA (cfDNA) enables noninvasive genomic analysis of NSCLC patients. Although plasma-detected genomic alterations (GAs) have been shown to predict targeted therapy response, evidence of durability of response is lacking or limited to small cohorts as is the impact of cfDNA NGS results on clinical decisions.

Methods: This retrospective study of stage IIIB/IV NSCLC patients between the years 2014 and 2017 in Israel used cfDNA NGS (Guardant360; Guardant Health, Inc.

Primary sarcomatoid carcinoma of the small intestine: very rare and aggressive tumour.

Sarcomatoid carcinoma of the small intestine is a very rare and aggressive variant of small intestinal cancers with poor prognosis. The tumour primarily affects middle-aged and older patients with a mean age of 57 years at the time of presentation. We report a woman aged 58 years without any relevant medical history who presented with small intestinal obstruction.

Differential diagnosis of wide QRS tachycardias: comparison of two electrocardiographic algorithms.

Aims: This study's aim is to compare the ability of two ECG criteria to differentiate ventricular (VT) from supraventricular tachycardia (SVT): Brugada et al. [horizontal plane (HP) leads] and Vereckei et al. [frontal plane (FP), specifically aVR lead], having electrophysiological study (EPS) as gold standard.

The use of external event monitoring (web-loop) in the elucidation of symptoms associated with arrhythmias in a general population.

Objective: To correlate arrhythmic symptoms with the presence of significant arrhythmias through the external event monitoring (web-loop).

Methods: Between January and December 2011, the web-loop was connected to 112 patients (46% of them were women, mean age 52±21 years old). Specific arrhythmic symptoms were defined as palpitations, pre-syncope and syncope observed during the monitoring.

Perioperative risk factors for 30-day mortality after bariatric surgery: is functional status important?

Background: Although the mortality from bariatric surgery is low, perioperative determinants of morbidity and mortality in the bariatric surgery population to date have not been fully defined. This study aimed to evaluate the factors capable of predicting perioperative mortality based on preoperative characteristics with a national patient sample.

Short-term results of incremental penile girth enhancement using liquid injectable silicone: words of praise for a change.

Aim: To report our experience with penile girth augmentation using liquid injectable silicone.

Methods: Between August 2003 and July 2006, 324 men (mean age 35 years, range 19-65 years) received a series of liquid silicone subcutaneous injections between the penile skin and the corpora cavernosa on the dorsal and lateral aspects of the penile shaft, under local anesthesia. Digital photographs taken pre- and post-procedure (n = 324), and penile contour measurements (n = 30) yielded objective results.

Diagnosis of turkey meningoencephalitis virus infection in field cases by RT-PCR compared to virus isolation in embryonated eggs and suckling mice.

Turkey meningoencephalitis (TME) is a paralytic epornitic disease of turkeys caused by turkey meningoencephalitis virus (TMEV), an arthopod-borne flavivirus belonging to the Ntaya serogroup VI. A TMEV specific RT-PCR was compared with classical techniques for TMEV diagnosis, which include virus isolation in 8-day-old chicken embryonated eggs and suckling mice, on 17 TME flocks with neurological signs that occurred during the fall of 1997. In 11/17 flocks both the RT-PCR and the virus isolation methods detected virus, in 4/17 flocks a negative diagnosis was obtained by both methods, and two flocks were positive by RT-PCR only.

Accumulation of Streptococcus mutans on light-cured composites and amalgam: an in vitro study.

The aim of the in vitro study was to examine the accumulation of Streptococcus mutans on light-cured composite materials and amalgam. Bacteria cultures were grown in a brain heart infusion medium, and their growth rate was determined through turbidity measurements. The data, so obtained, were evaluated statistically by analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Scheffe test.

Postoperative malignant hyperthermia episodes in patients who received "safe" anaesthetics.

Three cases of postoperative malignant hyperthermia (MH) episodes, after what was considered to be a "safe" anaesthetic, are described. In each case the temperature rose in a delayed fashion after an uneventful anaesthetic. Treatment included intravenous dantrolene, surface cooling and ventilation with 100 per cent oxygen.

Life events, psychiatric screening, and psychosomatic illness.

The General Health Questionnaire (GHQ) and the Schedule of Recent Events (SRE) were administered to a consecutive series of referrals to a general hospital psychiatric consultation service. Control groups of psychiatric and medical inpatients matched for age and sex were also evaluated. Significantly greater life change was found in the consultation group as compared to the medical controls, providing further support for the cluster theory of illness.

Inhibition of granulocyte erythrophagocytosis by HLA antisera.

The ability of HLA antisera to inhibit granulocyte erythrophagocytosis (EP) of opsonized red blood cells (RBC) was evaluated. Human granulocytes (PMN) were separated from heparinized whole blood by the Ficoll-Isopaque technique and suspended in McCoy's medium. EP occurred when the PMN were incubated with opsonized RBC.
