Ovarian hormone-induced reorganization of oxytocin-labeled dendrites and synapses lateral to the hypothalamic ventromedial nucleus in female rats.

Central oxytocin (OT) modulates many social behaviors, including female rat sexual receptivity, quantified as the copulatory stance known as lordosis. The expression of the lordosis response is modulated by OT action in the ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus (VMH), as demonstrated by behavioral pharmacology experiments. However, the subcellular localization of OT in this brain region has been unclear.

Antithrombotic therapies in patients with heart failure: hypothesis formulation from a research database.

Purpose: Heart failure is a significant public health problem. The present study is intended to explore in a research database whether antithrombotic therapies (ATTs) affect cardiovascular outcomes in patients with incident heart failure (IHF).

Methods: Using the United Kingdom Health Improvement Network research database, several multivariable models (including logistic and Cox's regression models, as well as propensity score methods) were used to examine all-cause mortality and clinical outcomes among five treatment groups.

Challenges to the development of new drugs and regimens for tuberculosis.

In spite of having effective, safe treatment for tuberculosis, the prevalence, incidence and mortality remain high. One of the ways to improve control of the disease is to reduce treatment duration either with currently used drugs or with the development of new drugs. These will all require clinical testing for safety and efficacy.

Establishing a Three Rs programme at the Canadian Council on Animal Care.

The anniversary of the Fund for the Replacement of Animals in Medical Experiments (FRAME) provides an opportunity to celebrate the Charity's achievements over the past 40 years, and in particular, its contribution to the international acceptance of the Three Rs as the basis of an ethic for animal experimentation, and its role as a leader in the implementation of the Three Rs in the life sciences. The Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) has based its work on the Three Rs, especially since the establishment of its fundamental CCAC Policy Statement on the Ethics of Animal Investigation (1989). Following recommendations from the evaluation of its programmes by external committees established by the national granting agencies, the CCAC recently launched a Three Rs Program.

Salience of working-memory maintenance and manipulation deficits in schizophrenia.

Background: Encoding and maintenance of information in working memory, followed by internal manipulation of that information for planning adaptive behavior, are two key components of working-memory systems. Both processes have been reported to be impaired in schizophrenia, but few studies have directly compared the relative severity of these abnormalities, or the degree to which manipulation deficits might be secondary to alterations in maintenance processes.

Method: Clinically stable schizophrenia patients (n=25) and a demographically similar healthy comparison group (n=24) were administered a verbal span task with three levels of working-memory load.

Aphelenchoides hylurgi as a carrier of white, hypovirulent Cryphonectria parasitica and its possible role in Hypovirulence spread on blight-controlled american chestnut trees.

Individual nematodes were isolated from American chestnut blight-controlled cankers to determine if they were carriers of biocontrol (hypovirulent) isolates of the chestnut blight fungus, Cryphonectria parasitica. These hypovirulent isolates have a white fungal colony phenotype due to infection by the virus CHV1. Of 1,620 individual Aphelenchoides hylurgi isolated, 29.

Electronic relaxation dynamics in large anionic water clusters: (H2O)n(-) and (D2O)n(-) (n = 25-200).

Electronic relaxation dynamics subsequent to s --> p excitation of the excess electron in large anionic water clusters, (H(2)O)(n)(-) and (D(2)O)(n)(-) with 25 < or = n < or = 200, were investigated using time-resolved photoelectron imaging. Experimental improvements have enabled considerably larger clusters to be probed than in previous work, and the temporal resolution of the instrument has been improved. New trends are seen in the size-dependent p-state lifetimes for clusters with n > or = 70, suggesting a significant change in the electron-water interaction for clusters in this size range.

Association of mannose-binding lectin deficiency with acute invasive aspergillosis in immunocompromised patients.

Background: Invasive aspergillosis is a devastating infection with attributable mortality of 40% despite antifungal therapy. In animal models of aspergillosis, deficiency of mannose-binding lectin (MBL), a pattern recognition receptor that activates complement, is a susceptibility factor. MBL deficiency occurs in 20%-30% of the population.

Auger recombination and excited state relaxation dynamics in Hg(n)(-) (n=9-20) anion clusters.

Using femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron imaging, electron-hole pairs are created in size-selected Hg(n)(-) anion clusters (n=9-20), and the subsequent decay dynamics are measured. These clusters eject electrons via Auger decay on time scales of 100-600 fs. There is an abrupt increase in the Auger decay time for clusters larger than Hg(12)(-), coinciding with the onset of the transition from van der Waals to covalent bonding in mercury clusters.

Adopting alternatives for the regulatory monitoring of shellfish for paralytic shellfish poisoning in Canada: Interface between federal regulators, science and ethics.

To ensure the safety of Canada's shellfish, the Canadian Shellfish Sanitation Program (CSSP) relies on the mouse bioassay to detect toxins known to cause paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP). This assay uses a large number of mice and requires death as an endpoint. Canadian research has led to the development of a pre-column High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) method that is more sensitive and more reliable than the mouse bioassay.

Sex differences in the dendritic arbor of hypothalamic ventromedial nucleus neurons.

The hypothalamic ventromedial nucleus (VMH) displays sexual dichotomies in its overall size, neurochemistry, and neuronal morphology. These differences may underlie the sex differences observed in functions mediated by the VMH, such as reproductive behaviors and energy balance. A previous Golgi impregnation analysis of VMH dendrites reported sex differences in total dendrite length in the ventrolateral region of the VMH.

Tobacco use among sexual minorities in the USA, 1987 to May 2007: a systematic review.

Objectives: This paper examines the prevalence of tobacco use among sexual minorities in the US through a systematic review of literature from 1987 to May 2007.

Methods: Seven databases were searched for peer-reviewed research (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Cochrane Library via Wiley InterScience, Education Resources Information Center (ERIC), Health Source: Nursing/Academic, Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) Web of Science, PsycINFO via EBSCO Host and PubMed). No language restrictions were used.

Photoinduced electron transfer and solvation in iodide-doped acetonitrile clusters.

We have used ultrafast time-resolved photoelectron imaging to measure charge transfer dynamics in iodide-doped acetonitrile clusters I(-)(CH(3)CN)(n) with n = 5-10. Strong modulations of vertical detachment energies were observed following charge transfer from the halide, allowing interpretation of the ongoing dynamics. We observe a sharp drop in the vertical detachment energy (VDE) within 300-400 fs, followed by a biexponential increase that is complete by approximately 10 ps.

Characterization of antibodies against benzo[a]pyrene with thermodynamic and kinetic constants.

Antibodies of a polyclonal antiserum against benzo[a]pyrene were characterized by determining thermodynamic and kinetic constants of the antigen-antibody reaction. Label-free binding assays with optical detection based on reflectometric interference spectroscopy were performed to determine these constants. Different evaluation methods for kinetic measurements were compared.

Repeated treatments with albendazole enhance Th2 responses to Ascaris Lumbricoides, but not to aeroallergens, in children from rural communities in the Tropics.

Geohelminth infections are associated with modulation of immunity to parasite antigens and aeroallergens. To investigate the possibility that this modulation is affected by anthelmintic treatment, we compared cytokine responses in children who were treated with repeated doses of albendazole over 1 year versus those in children who had were not treated. Whole-blood samples were cultured with Ascaris antigen and house dust mite and cockroach allergens, and levels of interleukin (IL)-5, IL-13, interferon-gamma, and IL-10 were measured.

Estradiol and progesterone differentially regulate the dendritic arbor of neurons in the hypothalamic ventromedial nucleus of the female rat (Rattus norvegicus).

The ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus (VMH), with its major subdivisions, the dorsomedial and ventrolateral VMH (dmVMH and vlVMH, respectively), has been studied extensively for its role in female sexual behavior. This behavior is controlled by the vlVMH through the cellular actions of estradiol combined with progesterone. Although the effects of treatment with estradiol alone on neuronal morphology in the vlVMH have been examined, much less is known about the combined effects of estradiol and progesterone on neuronal structure.

Environmental determinants of total IgE among school children living in the rural Tropics: importance of geohelminth infections and effect of anthelmintic treatment.

Background: The environmental factors that determine the elevated levels of polyclonal IgE observed in populations living in the Tropics are poorly understood but may include geohelminth infections. We investigated the association between geohelminth infections and total IgE levels in school children in rural tropical Ecuador, and assessed the effect on IgE of repeated anthelmintic treatments over a period of 12 months. The study was nested within a cluster-randomized study that randomized 68 schools to receive either 400 mg of albendazole every 2 months over a year or no treatment.

Breast MRI in the evaluation of eligibility for accelerated partial breast irradiation.

Objective: Eligibility for accelerated partial breast irradiation is generally determined by physical examination in conjunction with conventional imaging techniques such as mammography and breast sonography. MRI is recognized as a significant imaging tool in diagnosing breast cancer and has shown the ability to identify mammographically occult carcinoma. Our purpose was to retrospectively assess preoperative breast MRI examinations in women with early-stage breast cancer who were theoretically eligible for accelerated partial breast irradiation and to explore the use of MRI in selecting patients for this treatment.

Distal airways in mice exposed to cigarette smoke: Nrf2-regulated genes are increased in Clara cells.

Cigarette smoke (CS) is the main risk factor for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Terminal bronchioles are critical zones in the pathophysiology of COPD, but little is known about the cellular and molecular changes that occur in cells lining terminal bronchioles in response to CS. We subjected C57BL/6 mice to CS (6 d/wk, up to 6 mo), looked for morphologic changes lining the terminal bronchioles, and used laser capture microdissection to selectively isolate cells in terminal bronchioles to study gene expression.

Viability of cryopreserved parathyroid tissue: when is continued storage versus disposal indicated?

Background: Parathyroid cryopreservation is used for potential autografting in patients who are rendered hypocalcemic following surgery. Cryopreservation employs multiple resources and carries a significant cost for processing and storage of tissue. Importantly, the length of time that parathyroid tissue remains functional after cryopreservation is not known.
