Cyanogenic plants can release toxic hydrogen cyanide (HCN) to defend against herbivory by hydrolyzing the cyanogenic glycosides (CNGs) with its β-glucosidases (β-GLUs). Numerous studies have speculated this CNG-mediated toxicity by a plant-pest interaction manner. However, the specific toxic effect of HCN was not well-demonstrated because of the interference of other ingested metabolites.

This paper presents new excavation data and new radiometric dates for Jebel Moya, south-central Sudan. These data suggest revisions to previous chronological understandings of the site. New excavations, initiated in 2017, show a longer, more continuous occupation of the site than has been previously recognised.

This paper uses a combination of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and corpus linguistic analysis to extract and analyse disease related keywords from the Registrar-General's Decennial Supplements. Combined with known mortality figures, this provides, for the first time, a spatial picture of the relationship between the Registrar-General's discussion of disease and deaths in England and Wales in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Techniques such as collocation, density analysis, the Hierarchical Regional Settlement matrix and regression analysis are employed to extract and analyse the data resulting in new insight into the relationship between the Registrar-General's published texts and the changing mortality patterns during this time.

We present a case of pancreatitis with secondary pseudoaneurysm formation in a branch of the hepatic artery, which fistulated into the common bile duct following endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography. This aneurysm manifested itself clinically with recurrent haematemesis, and was treated by embolisation of the anterior and posterior branches of the right hepatic artery.

Objectives: To examine the geographical relation between mortality and deprivation in England and Wales at the start of the 20th and 21st centuries. To explore the evidence for a strengthening or weakening of this relation over the century and test for relations between the mortality and deprivation patterns of a century ago and modern mortality and causes of death.

Objective: To explore the lack of the learners' voice at previous international conferences on communication in healthcare.

Methods: A group of medical students and recently qualified junior doctors were invited to give the learner's perspective on how communication skills are taught and how they are implemented in 'real life', at a 90min symposium at the EACH International Conference on Communication in Healthcare, 4th September 2008, Oslo.

Results: We attempt to bridge the gap between learning communication skills formally in the medical classroom and actually implementing these in the real world between doctors and patients from a learners' perspective.

Gene probe hybridization was used to determine distribution and expression of co-metabolic genes at a contaminated site as it underwent in situ methanotrophic bioremediation of trichloroethylene (TCE). The bioremediation strategies tested included a series of air, air:methane, and air:methane:nutrient pulses of the test plot using horizontal injection wells. During the test period, the levels of TCE reduced drastically in almost all test samples.

We demonstrate, for the first time, an all-optoelectronic continuous-wave terahertz photomixing system that uses low-temperature grown InGaAs devices both for emitters and coherent homodyne detectors. The system is compatible with fiber-optic excitation wavelengths, and we compare the performance to the more common LT-GaAs photomixers.

The aims of this study were to determine the power of discrimination of the real-time PCR assay for monitoring fluctuations in microbial populations within activated sludge and to identify sample processing points where methodological changes are needed to minimize the variability in target quantification. DNA was extracted using a commercially available kit from mixed liquor samples taken from the aeration tank of four bench-scale activated-sludge reactors operating at 2-, 5-, 10-, and 20-day solid retention times, with mixed-liquor volatile suspended solid (MLVSS) values ranging from 260 to 2,610 mg/liter. Real-time PCR assays for bacterial and Nitrospira 16S rRNA genes were chosen because they represent, respectively, a highly abundant and a less-abundant bacterial target subject to clustering within the activated sludge matrix.

The effect of solids retention time (SRT) on ammonia-and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria was measured by Nitrosomonas oligotropha-like ammonia monooxygenase A and Nitrospira 16S rDNA competitive polymerase chain reaction assays in a complete-mix, bench-scale, activated-sludge system. During steady-state operation, nitrification was complete in the 20- and 10-day SRT reactors, nearly complete in the 5-day SRT reactor, and incomplete in the 2-day SRT reactor (76% ammonia oxidation and 85% nitrite oxidation). Total microbes, measured by dot-blot hybridizations, ranged from 3 x 10(11) to 3 x 10(12) cells/L, and increased with increasing SRTs.

The yeast PHO2 gene encodes a homeodomain protein that exemplifies combinatorial control in transcriptional activation. Pho2 alone binds DNA in vitro with low affinity, but in vivo it activates transcription with at least three disparate DNA-binding proteins: the zinc finger protein Swi5, the helix-loop-helix factor Pho4, and Bas1, an myb-like activator. Pho2 + Swi5 activates HO, Pho2 + Pho4 activates PHO5, and Pho2 + Bas1 activates genes in the purine and histidine biosynthesis pathways.
