Factors associated with long hospitalisation for psychotic disorder patients in an acute ward: Tertiary care hospital.

Background: The average length of stay is often used to indicate health system efficiency; shorter stays are associated with reduced costs. In South Africa, mental healthcare expenditure is spent on inpatient care.

Aim: To identify factors associated with a long stay in an acute psychiatric unit.

Experiences of gender incongruence and the relationship between social exclusion, psychological distress, and dysfunction among South African transgender adults: A field-study for ICD-11.

Background: The classification of sexuality-related conditions and conditions relating to transgender identity has generated controversy. Growing evidence suggests that the distress and dysfunction reported by transgender individuals is more likely associated with social exclusion, stigmatization, and violence than as a result of gender incongruence per se. Our study aimed to explore the experiences of South African transgender individuals through: 1) their self-reported accounts of gender incongruence, and 2) associations between their experiences of social exclusion and violence, and their reports of psychological distress and dysfunction during adolescence.

The lifetime prevalence of psychiatric diagnoses in an academic gender reassignment service.

Purpose Of Review: To review the literature regarding the prevalence of mental health concerns, including psychiatric diagnoses in the TGNC community.

Recent Findings: Gender dysphoria is not the only mental health concern experienced by some members of TGNC people. Stigma and discrimination play a role in the development of mental health concerns.

Ten-year results of a press-fit, porous-coated acetabular component.

We retrospectively reviewed, ten years after surgery, 100 consecutive total hip replacements in which the Duraloc 300 cup had been used. Post-operative radiographs were analysed for placement of the cup and interface gaps and follow-up radiographs for lucent lines, osteolysis, wear and migration. All the components were found to be stable with no evidence of loosening.

A comparison between cemented, press-fit, and HA-coated interfaces in Kinemax total knee replacement.

There are possible advantages of using uncemented fixation in total knee replacement. In this prospective randomised multi-centre study, a comparison was made between cemented and two types of uncemented fixation for the Kinemax design. There were 12-14 cases in each group.

Unpredictable progression of osteolysis following cementless hip arthroplasty. 24 femoral components followed for 6-10 years.

We reviewed 24 hips that developed femoral osteolytic lesions following cementless total hip replacement with a Porous-Coated Anatomic prosthesis after a mean of 8 (6-10) years. 15 of the hips showed hardly any radiographic deterioration in the osteolysis. 2 became much worse with dramatic loss of bone stock.

Unusual cause of ulnar nerve palsy.

An ulnar nerve palsy occurring as the result of an elbow dislocation is well recognized. An unusual case of an elbow dislocation with concomitant radial head fracture and ulnar nerve palsy caused by the radial head lying in the medial epicondylar groove is presented.

Loss of bone stock with cementless hip arthroplasty.

One hundred four porous-coated anatomic cementless hip arthroplasties followed from 2 to 6.5 years (mean, 50 months) were studied. Ninety-four percent had excellent clinical results.

Inserting the distal screws in a locked femoral nail.

We describe a simple method of inserting the distal screws in a locked femoral nail. The method requires no aiming device and no assistant. The only equipment needed is a 3 mm Kirschner wire and an air drill.

Auger ankle arthrodesis.

In 1986, O'Hara and Pearson described a method of ankle arthrodesis using an auger. They reported eight cases, all of which fused successfully. The same method was used in this comparative study of eight cases.
