Supramolecular bioinspired self-assembling peptide hydrogel (SAPH) scaffolds represent a class of fully defined synthetic materials whose chemical and mechanical properties can be finely engineered. In this study, the relationship between SAPHs physicochemical properties and HepG2 cells viability, spheroid formation and function are discussed. We first report that negatively charged SAPHs promote hepatocyte proliferation and spheroids formation 3D culture while positively charged SAPHs lead to hepatocyte death irrespective of the hydrogel mechanical properties.

As the management of gastrointestinal malignancy has evolved, tumor response assessment has expanded from size-based assessments to those that include tumor enhancement, in addition to functional data such as those derived from PET and diffusion-weighted imaging. Accurate interpretation of tumor response therefore requires knowledge of imaging modalities used in gastrointestinal malignancy, anticancer therapies, and tumor biology. Targeted therapies such as immunotherapy pose additional considerations due to unique imaging response patterns and drug toxicity; as a consequence, immunotherapy response criteria have been developed.

The corneal epithelium acts as a barrier to pathogens entering the eye; corneal epithelial cells are continuously renewed by uni-potent, quiescent limbal stem cells (LSCs) located at the limbus, where the cornea transitions to conjunctiva. There has yet to be a consensus on LSC markers and their transcriptome profile is not fully understood, which may be due to using cadaveric tissue without an intact stem cell niche for transcriptomics. The excellent soft-tissue demarcation of 4D magnetic resonance imaging (4D-MRI) could inform on intra-fractional motion, but long image reconstruction times hinder its use in online treatment adaptation. In this work, three different modified cements, control apatite/beta-tricalcium phosphate cement (CPC), polymeric CPC (p-CPC), and bioactive glass added polymeric cement (p-CPC/BG) were evaluated regarding their physical properties and the responses of primary human osteoblast cells (HObs) and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Although polyacrylic acid (PAA) increased compressive strength and Young's modulus of the cement, it could cause poor apatite phase formation, a prolonged setting time, and a lower degradation rate. Consequently, bioactive glass (BG) was added to PAA/cement to improve its physical properties, such as compressive strength, Young's modulus, setting time, and degradation.

Cohort-wide sequencing studies have revealed that the largest category of variants is those deemed 'rare', even for the subset located in coding regions (99% of known coding variants are seen in less than 1% of the population. Associative methods give some understanding how rare genetic variants influence disease and organism-level phenotypes. But here we show that additional discoveries can be made through a knowledge-based approach using protein domains and ontologies (function and phenotype) that considers all coding variants regardless of allele frequency.

Natural cases of zooanthroponotic transmission of SARS-CoV-2 to animals have been reported during the COVID-19 pandemic, including to free-ranging white-tailed deer () in North America and farmed American mink () on multiple continents. To understand the potential for angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2)-mediated viral tropism we characterised the distribution of ACE2 receptors in the respiratory and intestinal tissues of a selection of wild and semi-domesticated mammals including artiodactyls (cervids, bovids, camelids, suids and hippopotamus), mustelid and phocid species using immunohistochemistry. Expression of the ACE2 receptor was detected in the bronchial or bronchiolar epithelium of several European and Asiatic deer species, Bactrian camel (), European badger (), stoat (), hippopotamus (), harbor seal (), and hooded seal ().

Oxime formation is a convenient one-step method for ligating reducing sugars to surfaces, producing a mixture of closed ring α- and β-anomers along with open-chain ()- and ()-isomers. Here we show that despite existing as a mixture of isomers, -acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc) oximes can still be substrates for β(1,4)-galactosyltransferase (β4GalT1). β4GalT1 catalysed the galactosylation of GlcNAc oximes by a galactose donor (UDP-Gal) both in solution and on the surface of liposomes, with conversions up to 60% in solution and 15-20% at the liposome surface.

Safe delivery of hypofractionated radiotherapy requires high levels of accuracy due to the high doses of radiation delivered per fraction. Magnetic resonance guided radiotherapy (MRgRT) represents a new treatment paradigm which allows improved visualisation of targets and organs at risk, alongside the capability to adapt the treatment plan in real time prior to treatment delivery. There are challenges to delivering hypofractionated radiotherapy with conventional image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) techniques and MRgRT may help to improve accuracy in radiation delivery in a number of clinical and anatomical scenarios.
