Effects of three different educational programs (high, medium, and low structure) and two types of delivery systems ("teacher" only and "teacher" plus day care mother) on cognitive performance of 52 preschool children in family day care are examined. Family day care children showed greater and more consistent enhancement of cognitive functioning than did a comparison group of children in professionally-run group day care centers that did not include this educational component.

A technique for the purification of the hyphae of Filobasidiella neoformans is described. Cultural conditions and strains for maximal hyphal production were determined. Blastospores were separated from hyphae by sonification of mycelial suspensions.

Concentrations of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) in central (C) samples obtained by transfemorally catheterizing the inferior petrosal sinus of female bonnet monkeys were compared with those in peripheral (P) samples obtained simultaneously from the saphenous veins of two intact and two oophorectomized bonnet monkeys, before, during, and after luteinizing hormone releasing hormone (LHRH) stimulation. Significant differences between central and peripheral gonadotropin concentrations were detected intermittently in the resting state, and tended to be magnified by LHRH administration. In one animal in which LHRH was fortuitously administered during the course of a spontaneous LH surge, a C/P ratio for LH of 12.

We describe a previously healthy, immunologically normal young girl who presented painless swelling of fingers, a toe, and one knee. Roentgenograms were consistent with osteomyelitis of the phalanges and knee effusion. Rice bodies (corpora oryzoidea) were identified in viscous fluid obtained from the knee during arthroscopy.

Over 9,000 junior and senior high school students in 79 schools in 10 cities completed an anonymous questionnaire concerning use of and attitudes toward licit and illicit drugs. Single and multivariate analyses indicated strong and statistically significant relationships between the consumption of alcohol, tobacco, and over-the-counter medicines and experience with illicit drugs. Also, the user of illicit drugs is also a relatively frequent user of licit drugs--alcohol, tobacco, and over-the-counter medications.

Corneal infection due to the species Aspergillus flavus is rare and often destructive. This report describes a case of Aspergillus flavus corneal ulcer that failed to respond to amphotericin B, pimaricin, and clotrimazole. The eye subsequently became phthisical.

A 47-year-old woman presented with cough, pleuritic chest pain and fever of three weeks duration. Although the patient lived in an area where blastomycosis is endemic, this diagnosis was not initially considered owing to the presence of consolidation and a large pleural effusion on the initial chest roentgenogram. Cultures of sputa, bronchial washings and pleural fluid documented the presence of pleuropulmonary infection with Blastomyces dermatitidis.

Prototype solid dielectric compound parabolic concentrators have been made and tested. By means of the geometry and refractive properties of a transparent solid they provide a technique for increasing the power output of silicon solar cells exposed to the sun by an amount nearly equal to the increase in effective collecting area. The response is uniform over a large angle which eliminates the necessity of diurnal tracking of the sun.

To determine the recent postmortem character of cerebral mycoses, 1,752 consecutive complete autopsies done in the endemic fungal area of central Kentucky from 1964 through 1973 were reviewed. Fourteen patients (0.8%) had histologically confirmed fungal infections in the brain.

The first case of proven maduromycosis originating in the state of Kentucky, and the 21st case reported in the United States, is described. The disease, which involved the foot, was caused by Monosporium apiospermum. The importance of suspecting and culturing for fungal organisms in cases of chronic or recurrent infections of the extremities is stressed.

A simple method for positive identification of Histoplasma capsulatum, Blastomyces dermatitidis, and Sporothrix schenckii is given. Primary tissue cultures of guinea pig peritoneal macrophage were inoculated with the mycelial phase of each organism and after 24 h the cells were stained and observed microscopically. The characteristic yeast phase could then be observed allowing for positive identification.

Amphotericin B colloidal solutions were prepared according to the manufacturer's directions and filtered with membrane filters of different porosity to test for particulate matter; and the concentration and in vitro microbiological activity of filtered and nonfiltered solutions were determined. The amphotericin B solutions contained numerous particles. Filtration through 0.

Studies were performed to evaluate a method for selective isolation of Histoplasma capsulatum and Blastomyces dermatitidis from contaminated specimens. Ammonium hydroxide placed on an agar medium surface was found to inhibit the growth of many bacteria, yeasts, and saphrophytic fungi normally found in specimens such as animal tissues and sputum. In one study involving the culture of B.
